A collectible silver coin with a face value of 5 dollars, issued in 2019 by the island state of Niue.
This design opens the famous numismatic series "Grand Shipwrecks in a History", and specifically this first issue is dedicated to the pirate flagship Whydah Gally.
The coin is made of pure 999-grade silver weighing 2 ounces (62.2 g), has a diameter of 50 mm and an Antique Finish.
The reverse is decorated with a high relief depicting a pirate ship in color, a skull, a pistol, coins and a compass; the circulation is limited to 500 copies worldwide.
The coin depicts the Whydah Gally, the famous three-masted galleon of the early 18th century, which became the flagship of the Black Sam Bellamy, one of the richest and most successful pirates in history.
At the end of April 1717, the Ouida was caught in a severe storm off the coast of Cape Cod Peninsula (Massachusetts, USA). The ship ran into a shoal, capsized and sank. Of the 146 people on board, only two survived, and Captain Bellamy himself died.
In 1984, the wreckage was discovered by an expedition led by archaeologist Barry Clifford. The Ouida has gone down in history as the first and only fully confirmed pirate ship of the golden age of piracy found on the seabed. Thousands of artifacts were recovered from the bottom, including a ship's bell with the inscription "The Whydah Gally 1716", weapons, as well as tons of pirate treasures — gold and silver.
