Bangladeshi writing in English, then, is finally asserting itself in the eyes of the reading public at home and abroad. But it is important to stress that these are still early days for it. Short fiction seems to be the genre engaging most creative writers writing in English. The overwhelming Bengali-language culture will ensure that good English-language poetry will probably be written and read by only a handful of Bangladeshis; plays in English will always be a rarity for the same reason. But one can look forward to much more non-fiction prose in the decades to come, for the English-language press is thriving and features young Bangladeshis intensely involved in the country’s future and ready to articulate their views in the language.

Writer and director Kamar Ahmad Simon was declared the winner of the 9th edition of Asian Pitch, which is his second time. The event was held in Singapore. Medicorp, the foremost group of commercial media companies from Singapore, recently confirmed the win in a letter.

Tanwi Nandini Islam's debut novel is an understated queer coming-of-age tale, set in a vividly-portrayed Brooklyn brownstone whose residents all ache for some kind of home they've never been to.
“In this debut novel, Tanwi Nandini Islam uses Brooklyn and Bangladesh as backdrops to the internal homes of her characters, and much of the novel's satisfaction comes from the ways they overlap and interact. And home, as a concept, is fluid: It's the ghosts you carry, it's a feeling that can be bestowed or taken away, and it requires something more complicated than just living somewhere. Though the brownstone at 111 Cambridge Place is lovingly described, it isn't one of those homes that becomes a character; it's a place to contain people who are searching for what home is."

“As a writer I don't believe in literary books. I mean that I don't think a writer should set out to write something high blown and dense, or that any work should be dismissed out of hand because of genre. I've been writing for a long time, I've got some very bad fantasy novels stacked up in floppy drives. I think it takes those early efforts to actually develop the craft of writing, from sentence structures to plot points to overcoming the fear of writing. I'm not that concerned any more about categories or marketability, because it's just too hard to write with those kinds of restrictions. There are certain elements of fantasy and black humor which will be present in all my work, regardless of which genre the work is published in, because that is an integral part of my writing style.”

“The hardest thing is when one confronts the limits of translation. So far I’ve been able to solve most of the puzzles I’ve come across, but there is one area where I encounter a thick wall. This concerns dialect. Often the writers I translate write in many voices and their use of dialect gives their prose a distinct pleasure to the reader in the original language. Sometimes I have come across translations that attempt to translate dialect and end up creating crude languages which evoke existing dialects elsewhere, such as Cockney or Black English. I find these jarring.”
