Apparently I have an unpopular opinion: I believe we need to find a middle ground in sexual assault cases. In years prior, we didn’t believe victims. Now the second someone is accused, the defendant is crucified. While this is a positive change, we need to find that middle ground where on the off chance they are innocent, we don’t destroy the defendant’s life because they will always be guilty in the public’s eyes. I believe in order to do this, we need to be able to put more trust in our justice system because there are still a lot of Brock Turners but there has to be a middle ground somewhere along the line of “I believe the victim, let’s investigate” and someone is innocent until proven guilty.

Lol way to go on anon so we can't have a real conversation. I never said he didn't do it and I never said I don't believe in the victims. In America, you are innocent until proven guilty. We have 0 information so as the public, we have to sit and watch it unfold. America has gone from I don't believe you to I believe you 200% and let's grab our pitch forks. If he did it, I'll grab my pitch fork and join you but on the off chance he is in the 3% that is truly innocent, I will not draw any conclusion until there is more information available.

I will not. You nor I have the information about the accusations or the investigation so we are both just going on possible rumors. Just like with Addison Russel of the Chicago Cubs, he was suspended pending investigation.That does not mean he was innocent or guilty, it just means more information is needed to make a judgement. 

It is true that there are many false accusations but it is also true that many accusations aren’t taken seriously. There needs to be a middle ground where survivors can come forward without fear of not being believed, without destroying the life of someone who might be innocent. Hence my statement above. I’m not saying the accusations are false, but I don’t believe the public should crucify someone until a proper investigation is done. It shouldn’t have to be a defendant is automatically believed to be guilty until being proven innocent. I know in the past it was survivors weren’t taken seriously but because of movements like “MeToo” we do. But that doesn’t mean it is right to go total 180 and automatically believe someone is guilty. That is why we have a law enforcement to investigate this claims. That is not the way this country was built. It has been shown in the past that even if someone is proven innocent by a court of law, the public still views them as guilty and it is destroying the life of an innocent person. Now in the case of R. Kelly, there is proof of sexual misconduct and therefore we can crucify him. But according to all the information released to the public at this time, we cannot automatically assume that John was guilty. We must believe the accuser and conduct in investigation, but we can’t automatically assume someone is guilty. 

John was not allowed to make any public statement to defend himself which is another issue. Every person deserves the right to defend himself and given that the public is also now becoming a jury, he should have been allowed to make a statement. While it may be traumatic for a possible survivor, there needs to be some kind of middle ground because if there is a false accusation the defendant shouldn’t be penalized. I am not saying John did do it, or didn’t but until a proper investigation is done, the public shouldn’t jump to any conclusions. So I choose to mourn a man who died because that is the information I have to go on.

“Innocent until proven guilty” whats so innocent about being suspended by safe sport on top of killing yourself right around the time the allegations start popping up? Women rarely lie about being sexually abused. I believe the victims. you can type your little paragraphs with your what about isms and deflections but I stand with the victims. you are part of the problem when it comes to rape culture. shame on you.

They have to suspend him pending an investigation. That is how it goes. That doesn’t mean he is guilty. He could have killed himself because he was afraid of people finding out the truth or he could have killed himself because he couldn’t deal with his life being ruined and he didn’t do anything. I never said I don’t believe the victims. If you actually read what I said, I said we have to believe them and do an investigation but on the off chance it is a false accusation, we have to believe in due process. Therefore, I am in the “we need more information before I jump to a conclusion” category where I believe the survivors but I won’t crucify John until there is proof because that is how the country works.

The huge outpour of support in the figure skating community for John Coughlin after his suicide makes me so uncomfortable considering there are sexual abuse allegations against him and he was suspended by safesport.

Everyone else really needs to take notes from him. Dalilah and Chris’ responses were disgusting and the worst. Eric making an entire song… what. Weapo bring it up themselves to the press after Canadian Nationals… what. All these other skaters talking about how great of a person he was and ignoring all the allegations makes me so uncomfortable. Also some just posted like black squares in reference to it without saying anything, but still I think it’s better to stay quiet if you’re not going to acknowledge the allegations… I get this is a super conflicting situation for all these people who knew him personally, but still imagine what the victims are thinking seeing all this support for their abuser?

People need to put themselves in the place of those friends. You just lost someone you loved. There has been no formal investigation and therefore one is innocent until proven guilty. Even if he did do it, you are still mourning because the man you thought was an amazing human turned out not to be and that still hurts. Either way, those people are mourning and there is no “right” response to have because nothing like this has ever happened. 

Society went from not believing survivors to someone is guilty until proven innocent. There has to be a middle ground where the survivor is believed without destroying the life of someone who is possibly innocent. While majority of the time the defendant is guilty, if someone is innocent they shouldn’t need to have their life destroyed because publicly it is almost impossible to come back from an accusation like that.

Wait what happened?

About a month ago safe sport put him on notice or something for possible sexual misconduct. On Thursday USFS suspended him from all figure skating related activities which includes not competing in championships this week and not coaching. He took his life yesterday. So either he was guilty and couldn’t deal with possible punishment or he was just guilty in the public’s eyes and his whole life was being destroyed despite not doing anything wrong and he couldn’t handle that.

Went to work, then had to drive my dad to the ER, stayed with him, and now I’m finally back home 12 hours later. I’m so tired.
