Russia’s gay propaganda ban was passed in 2013. But it made frequent rounds in the news cycle in early 2014 with Russia hosting the Winter Olympics in Sochi. It's widely believed that US President, Barack Obama, and French President, François Hollande, did not attend Olympics because of the ban. Gambia also passed anti-gay legislation, and so did Uganda, although the Constitutional Court there struck it down. 2015 could see more laws on the table criminalizing LGBT in Krygystan. And Uganda has also promised to re-introduce legislation against LGBT. So, what's in store for 2015? Do we see more anti-laws being enacted?
In December, a court in Beijing ordered that a clinic in the southwestern city of Chongqing pay compensation to a gay man for trying to alter his sexual orientation through electric shocks. The practice is known as conversion therapy. But the Haidian District court in Beijing ruled that homosexuality does not require treatment. The man who brought the clinic to court is Yang Teng, and we caught up with him shortly after the verdict was issued to hear his story.
Last month leading sexologist and LGBT rights advocate Li Yinhe revealed that she is in a relationship with a transgender man. The news garnered plenty of attention in the world of Chinese social media, in a country where trans issues receive scant attention. Last time on our show we looked at some comments made by Zachary Quinto regarding HIV and the gay community. The Star Trek actor said young gay men had become complacent in the fight against HIV, and even lazy. Now a Conservative candidate for mayor of London and gay tycoon Ivan Massow says the city's gay scene has a drug problem. In an interview with the UK's Gaydio, he says gay men don't know how to behave and they need to "grow up." He says that a straight mayor can't clean up the problem because any attempt to do so would be seen as homophobic.
Is Massow right that a heterosexual who confronts drug use in the gay community may be viewed as homophobic? Can only a gay mayor confront the community's drug problem?
