OK SO-

Thing is a living cartoon so naturally he's very slapsticky and doesn't get hurt when someone hits him. THATS ONLY IF the person hitting him doesn't have any real malice behind it (like if they're doing it for a joke or are just annoyed with him but don't actually want to hurt him, that kind of stuff)

But if the person actually wants to hurt him then he'll feel the pain

(I know this doesn't make much sense because in cartoons if the other character wants to actually hurt the main one they still won't feel pain. BUT in his transition to the real world some things had to be adjusted)
