The First House in Astrology
The first house shows the very beginnings of who you are as a person- right as you exited the womb, you were given a name, and from there, gradually your identity started to form. The basic things that you’ve associated yourself with since you were able to self-realize is everything under the domain of the first house. From how you title yourself, to how you express your individuality, to your temperament- all of that is determined by the first house. Any planets or signs that appear here are so prominent in your personality. If we look at the 12 houses as rooms inside of an actual how, the first house is the first impression people get of you and your lifestyle as soon as they walk in. The domain of the first house is one of self-interest, outward behavior, any names/titles which you use to identify yourself, and how you assert yourself. Also under its’ domain lies your body language, mannerisms, and generally what demeanor you have. Going back to the analogy of the house, when people first open the door to cipher you out, what do they see? Are they met with something comfortable and welcoming, or are you more reserved and maybe even cold? Under the domain of the first house comes your physical appearance and your sense of fashion; generally, how you express yourself. The house is naturally ruled by Aries, therefore, it’s very assertive by nature. Even the most introverted individuals assert themselves as something to the rest of the world.
Planets in the First House
The Sun: This is such a powerful house placement for the Sun to find itself. As I mentioned earlier, any planet here is immediately a potent part of your personality because it either shines over or throws an overcast over the rest of your chart. That being said, the Sun here makes for an independent person, regardless of what sign it falls in, because you find so much confidence and self-assurance in the fact that you are yourself and that you are so unique, so not much gets to you. This makes for a person with excellent leadership ability who probably has a smile that lights up the darkest room. People are drawn to your warm aura that radiates generosity and optimism. However, if the Sun’s burning a bit too bright in your chart, this can manifest as vanity and egotism, maybe even dictatorial behavior.
The Moon: Every person with the Moon in the first house, at least that I’ve met, has really pretty big eyes. Your emotions are the most prominent part of your personality, as you wear them out on your sleeve for all to see. You’re a very vulnerable and open person, and people often gravitate towards your nurturing nature. An important thing for people with this placement to remember is that it’s okay to have boundaries, and like the Moon, you can go through phases where you go inward and not extend your light to others in order to recharge. You can never hide your emotions all that well, either, because your face says it all.
Mercury: When you aren’t talking about yourself, you’re talking about your knowledge and how you perceive the world. People with this placement are so talkative, but not necessarily the most outgoing. Whenever you talk to them, they’re very articulate. However, it’s very obvious that there’s no real filter from their brain to their mouth. If you have this placement, you like to experience everything and are a bit flighty with how quickly you go from one thing/person to another. You have so many hobbies and you take pride in them, so you share them with the world. You need your mental abilities to be challenged, and you have a knack for connecting with wider audiences.
Venus: It seems like people (somewhat appropriately) over-romanticize the idea of Venus in the first house, however, Venus finds herself uncomfortable here; her home is the 7th house. She finds herself falling victim to the more negative aspects of her psyche when in the house of self. That being said, if you have this placement, you often define yourself by how others see you. Despite your effortless sex appeal and charm, deep down, you find yourself rather addicted to other people’s admiration and affection. People with this placement understand social cues and take great pride in how they groom/express themselves.
Mars: This is a very potent placement. You walk into a room and people recognize you, and if they don’t, you make them recognize you. Contradictory to Venus’ uncomfortable state in this house, Mars finds himself empowered and ready to take on the world. People with this placement are very direct, and a lot of times, people don’t know how to take them. You say what’s on your mind, and to hell with the people who have an issue with it. Oftentimes, you can be rather selfish and demanding, but people often admire your ambition and outgoing qualities.
Jupiter: People gravitate so easily to people with Jupiter in the first house because you radiate absolute benevolence. Everything about you is exaggerated, appearance, the stories you tell, and how you identify. People love you just for you, and you never have to worry about being yourself. You’re very confident and take great pride in the fact that you’re constantly both learning and teaching. That being said, it’s easy for these individuals to fall prey to an over-inflated sense of self-importance.
Saturn: This placement is every bit as interesting as it is difficult and trying; since the first house represents you whenever you first came into the world, this could quite literally indicate a prolonged birth that was difficult on the mother, almost as though the natives weren’t ready to enter the world yet. This reflects itself in the rest of your life if you have this placement; you meet every new situation with new apprehension and you don’t like to change your established routines. You have an immensely serious outlook on life. The perks of this include a huge deal of work ethic, ambition, and you’re stronger than you realize. That being said, almost every native of this placement battles with some sort of self-image issues, whether that be insecurity or full-blown eating disorders. People may be intimidated by you because of how cold and calculating you appear; however, what they don’t see is the fact that you’ve built this up for yourself because you’re hiding your turbulent emotions below the surface. You may appear as though you have it together, but more often than not, this is just a protective shell to hide the broken fragments within.
Uranus: Individuals with this placement take pride in how different and eccentric they are compared to everybody else. People who have this placement may sometimes be seen, especially as children, as though they’re hyper-active, over-aggressive, and nonconformist to a volatile degree. These are the people who enjoy shaking things up just for the hell of it. Your unconventionality is the most prominent part of your personality. Oftentimes, these natives tend to find themselves as polarizing figures, whether they realize it or not. They refuse to be tied down or to conform by any means, and often do things to separate their appearance drastically from the rest, whether physically or by how they act.
Neptune: People with this placement are left up to how society perceives them; if you’re seen as a martyr, you become just that. If you’re seen as the antagonist, you find yourself becoming the villain. Though the first house is the basic sense of your identity, you find the lines blurred between your already frail sense of self and how other people have typified you. Due to this, people are always wrong about you. However, people with this placement have a knack for picking up on things and they feel everything around them. They physically feel everybody else’s emotions, on top of their own, and this can drive these people absolutely mad because it’s no longer just their own internal monologue; it’s everybody else’s as well. Because they know no boundaries, people see these natives as vulnerable, and often take advantage of them. People with this placement are either idolized or antagonized based on people’s perception of them- and there’s absolutely no in between.
Pluto: This placement makes you appear unapproachable and very intense. People are probably super intimidated by you because of one aspect of your appearance or another. You come off as a very powerful person. Many people with this placement leave some sort of legacy on the world, and they never die without making a scene. Because of this polarizing effect, these natives have a highly emotional effect on people who they come into contact with. Similar to Saturn in the first house, astrologers have hypothesized that those with this placement were born into a difficult and tumultuous childhood; even at birth, these natives were probably in a life-threatening situation, whether it was for them or their mother. The reason why these natives appear so cold and like they don’t need anyone is because, from an early age, they knew nothing more than self-sufficiency in the face of trauma and deep emotional turmoil. These people adhere to their vindictive, paranoid, and chaotic nature because deep down, that’s what they feel their identity is. They’ve built walls upon walls to protect themselves from any other harm- even if it means not letting people in at all.
