Why makeup and feminism relate
Feminism is defined as the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. There’s an assumption women who choose to wear makeup do so because they have poor self-images; any woman who wears makeup “needs” to in order to feel beautiful. The internet likes to celebrate ppl who choose to rock the bare skin look, as though they deserve a medal just for abstaining from foundation - Elite Daily. Beauty is not dependent on whether or not you have makeup on. Beauty is about choice. Restrictions of any kind that tell people what they can and cannot wear are sexist. - Amy Schumer. “Judging a woman for wearing makeup bc it makes her feel good is just as [bad as]...” “...criticizing her habit of putting on makeup solely based on her lack of self-esteem or desire to please men” - Caro Chauvet. Suggesting that a women without makeup on is somehow better is a compliment, it is another means of control and body policing. If you want to wear makeup, wear it. If you don’t want to wear makeup, don’t wear it. It’s really that simple. Ultimately, it’s your choice. Makeup can be a way to express oneself, to reflect who an individual is on the inside. This culture as a whole should begin to reconsider cosmetics entirely. Because makeup can be what individuals make of it; it is an art form and is not defining, but liberating. Thus, society should consider liberating makeup. - @TheArtifice. Also this: https://youtu.be/a4Ov8qvZ2_w. No one needs makeup, you don’t need it to impress someone, you don’t need it to feel beautiful, and you don’t need it to fit in. Real, true, lasting confidence comes from inside and will be there even when you wash your makeup off - Mykie. When we imply women reach for makeup because of self-doubt, we undermine our entire gender. We insinuate we are incapable of thinking for ourselves, that we are simply products of Hollywood and the media. It says we have succumbed to societal pressures and are nothing more than a bunch of lemmings wearing eyeliner. Can you be a feminist and wear makeup? Abso-fucking-lutely this common superstition that all feminists are plus-size women with crew cuts who don’t care how they look.
