HYPER ISLAND Lars stumbled upon a former military prison while visiting the island of Stumholmen, just off the idyllic coast of Karlskrona in southeastern Sweden. He knew almost immediately that it was the perfect location to launch their idea. A place unorthodoxically fitting to bring their vision to life.
With that, Hyper Island was born, named in part “Hyper” was a popular coding term. Its prison doors officially opened in 1996 and its first batch of students streamed in soon after. The irony was not lost that the students would discuss, study and explore the seemingly boundaryless digital world while sitting within the confined walls of prison cells.
