how to win at college
this also applies to high school in a lot of ways, esp in organization and involvement
I read this book by cal newport called “how to win at college” in prep for my freshman year & u should definitely read it yourself because there are lots of important points i don’t cover in this post, but if you don’t want to, this is my summary of what I think were the most important points he made.
STUDY HARD, BUT YOUR GRADES DON’T MEAN AS MUCH AS WHAT YOU LEARN OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM. he prioritizes getting vital experiences such as
- joining a club and eventually taking responsibility in it and becoming a leader
- apply for scholarships every year (he said 10 a year)
- volunteer, but not for your resume. do it to learn and become a better person.
- get involved in research, and get involved in your major department (like go to the events and lectures, even if they aren’t mandatory)
- write outside of class regularly because writing is super important (example- submit to your school newspaper)
STAY ORGANIZED AND ON TOP OF YOUR SHIT
- he really really REALLY emphasizes not procrastinating and studying / starting papers well in advance of deadlines. his rules are to
- - >start long term projects immediately after they are assigned and continue to work on them by following a reasonable schedule (he says to finish early, revise, then finish again),
- - > take 3 days to write shorter papers (aka you have abt 2 weeks to work on them and they range from 2-15ish pages) (aka make preparations pre writing, then write a rough draft on the first day, revise and focus your writing on the second day (make sure your arguments are very clear!), and polish your paper on the third day), and
- - >take 2 weeks to study for an exam. study in shorter blocks during the first week, like maybe an hour or so each day. over the weekend, add more hours. the few days before the test, study in 2-3 hour chunks to really cement the already familiar information.
- get a filing cabinet for your papers instead of just piling them on your desk and having to search for them later.
- have a HIGH QUALITY notebook and a folder for each class (or whatever stationery keeps you organized) and keep all your folders/notebooks/binders neat and organized.
- empty your inbox and organize your emails
- schedule your free time- aka have specific times that you choose to relax and spend with friends rather than unintentionally relaxing during work time, or worrying about work during relaxation time.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
- you NEED sleep, you NEED healthy food, and you NEED exercise. you really shouldn’t put anything ahead of these things.
- NEVER pull an all nighter. if you’re studying ahead of time, this should be easy. all nighters aren’t glamorous, they’re unproductive, really stressful, and unhealthy
- keep in touch with old friends, and remember to call your mom
- make sure to spend time with new friends and take care of them. be there for your friends.
- keep your room neat and make your bed!!
like i said, there is a lot of important stuff that I didn’t cover so i recommend reading the book how to win at college by cal newport, and take what you need to from it. good luck!!!
Planning ahead and studying my ass off this weekend, but I have a feeling it’ll be worth it in the long run. Here are some notes and some snaps from LA cafes last weekend xxx

hello, lovelies! I’ve had the weirdest start to the year, it feels like life is happening to me and I’m just some spectator sitting back and watching it happen. After like two months of this, I have realised that I need to sort my shit out. I’m hoping, as always, that those of you who feel the same will find this useful! so here’s a step by step to staying on track when life feels like it’s getting ahead of you.
STEP ONE // accepting the problem
so your concentration has been slipping lately. you haven’t been getting much sleep trying to stay on top of your work, and you still feel like you could be putting in more effort. you find yourself procrastinating more often than not. if you feel like this is you, worry not, friend. this kind of slump is more common than you think! usually, you can get out of it in a couple of weeks, but if it’s persisting for longer, I think it’s important to accept that there is a problem and start doing something about it.
STEP TWO // identifying your problem areas
maybe you can’t concentrate because you haven’t been regular with your medication. maybe you’ve had a fight with your friends or your significant other. maybe people at school or college are horrible (I know that feeling). put whatever you’re doing down and remember this: you are a human being.
it is totally normal and completely okay to face non-academic distractions, and I firmly believe that until you’ve resolved whatever is causing an emotional low for you, any effort you put in will be half-assed and essentially useless. so go out and work through your emotional stress! of course, there are some problems that aren’t easily worked through, but what I’m trying to tell you is get the help you need. you deserve it and more. sometimes it’s just as easy as talking to someone (and I’m always here to listen, if you need me).
STEP THREE // motivation!!!!!!!!
now you’ve worked through some issues that could be causing your emotional low, let’s look at something that’s hard to put a pin in: motivation. sometimes it’s as easy as scrolling through the studyblr tag or looking at inspirational quotes, and sometimes it feels like finding motivation is harder than climbing a mountain. believe me, I get you. the first thing i do when I hit this point is look at this infographic. it’s incredible how it puts things in perspective.
the next thing you need to realise is that the only motivation that is legitimate is self-motivation. I’m as much of a believer in Elle Woods or Hermione Granger inspo as anyone else, but at the end of the day, what really wakes me up is my personal drive to be financially independent and make my parents proud. eventually, it all boils down to you and what you want from your life. not everyone wants to go to harvard or make six figures a year, and that is more than okay (you do you).
STEP FOUR // discipline
so now you have motivation. awesome. problem is, motivation is temporary. it’s great to be motivated, but what really matters is discipline. motivation, no matter how self-driven, can fizzle out anytime. in times like those, discipline is what beats procrastination and keeps you going through distractions! everybody achieves discipline in different ways, but I find holding yourself responsible and accountable for your own actions can go a long way. This is where keeping a journal, a planner or to-do lists can be helpful! I’m not going to tell you how to organise yourself here, but I find that when you write down what you have to do, you’re holding yourself accountable to complete it.
discipline isn’t going to happen immediately,so do it in bits and pieces. you could start by tracking how much time you spend on productivity vs. procrastination in a day, or fix a schedule for yourself with rigid timings for different activities. experiment, and find out what works for you in the long term!
STEP FIVE // track your progress
by now, I’m sure you’ve worked out of your slump, and I hope it feels like you’re taking control of your life. now comes the relatively hard part: tracking your progress so it’s not as easy to fall back in a slump. make a note every day of how much work you’re getting done and the mistakes you make, and you’ll be surprised at how quickly and easily your work improves as you fall into a routine!
//
so this was my five-step progress plan to stay on track! of course, I’m still working on it. I’m a novice at balancing my life, too (we’re aaallll in this togetherrrr~). I hope you find this post helpful, and consider checking out:

Introducing my desk, my laptop, my 2016 planner, my fav glass coaster, and my paper flowers made from Harry Potter pages!!!
hey! people seem to really like the notebooks i posted pics of on my blog, so i thought why not make a masterpost on how to do them so u can all have cute notebooks without having to spend lots of money on them!
what you’ll need
any notebook[s] that you want to use
white paint + brush [optional]
good quality glue
magazines
printer + white paper for the quotes
that’s it!!
1. the borders
if your notebook isn’t spiral bound, like mine were, + you can glue things on the borders you can skip this step
if you do have a spiral bound notebook but it’s a neutral colour, or the colour matches the design you want, feel free to skip too!
my notebooks had a combination of colours that didn’t really go with the designs, + i couldn’t glue things because of the spirals, so i had to fix that
i just grabbed some white paint, a paintbrush, + carefully painted the borders white!
you may have to clean the spirals a little afterwards because (for me) it’s basically impossible not to get any paint on them – for the first notebook i did, i used a damp cloth, but for the second one i was too lazy and just left the dry paint there lmao
2. the design
get some magazines, get comfy, and start going through them! tear out any pages where u see something cute or that you can potentially use somehow. don’t worry about the design yet
when u feel like u have enough, cut them and start putting them together until u like what u have! don’t glue them just yet, just lay them on the notebook so you can be sure u like the final result
i did two notebooks two different ways:
for the first one [left], i had some newspaper-ish paper with text in columns that i used as a background, i glued it to all of the front + back covers, then on top of that i glued a couple pics
for the second one [right], i glued all of the pics on top of the notebook itself
if you end up with empty spaces u can fill them with parts of magazines that have no text/design, just plain colours, or with parts of articles
i didn’t print any images cause my printer’s crap with colours, but u can do that if u want!
tip: make sure your pics are big enough that you can fold them over the borders of the notebook and stick them on the other side! the finished look is better + it’s more durable
3. putting it together
this is the messy part, or the fun part if you’re not a perfectionist like me lmao
i haven’t figured out the best way to glue them so that u don’t get those crinkley parts, but don’t be afraid to mess up! in the end it won’t rlly matter and it may even look cool
you can put glue either on your notebook or the back of the pictures, then carefully place them, smoothing them out as much as you can – but again, don’t worry if it’s not perfect
you may want to be careful and wash your hands in between making them so that u don’t ruin any of the paper/pics bc u have glue in ur hands
4. extra: quotes
look at your notebooks: do they look finished? great! do they look like there’s something missing/something you could add? i have the answer for you!
look for some short quotes that you like – from a book, something a famous person said, part of a poem, song lyrics, motivational quotes, something you came up with, etc etc
i only used one on each notebook. in one i put it on the front and on the other on the back. it really doesn’t matter tbh
i used the font ‘archivo black’, italicized, in a very dark grey on mine
i printed them in the size i wanted, cut them like u can see on the pics, and glued them once the other pics i glued were dry – it isn’t necessary to wait, i did it just in case lmao
