The country is divided as it hasn't been in years, but what people forget is that no matter who you voted for [and I'll remind everyone it is NOT acceptable to ask someone who they voted for, that is their business and their business alone], we're all people. And I wasn't happy with what happened late on Tuesday night. Very few people I know are happy about and some good friends are legitimately fearful for their safety. But I want everyone to understand that only a quarter of this country's population made this happen. A quarter. That means that if you don't like this, if you don't like what happened, you can do something about it. Not immediately. But you can. So what can you do now?
Whether you voted for Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, or a third party candidate, remember you are a person. And if someone you know voted in a way you disagree with, remember that they are a person. Treat them as such. It isn't that difficult to have empathy, and this country isn't about brother turning on brother, it hasn't been since 1865.
The world is changing and change is scary, no matter which side of history you're on, no matter how old you are, humans hate change.
So in the wake of what has happened I'd like to remind everyone that whether you're Republican, Democrat, or other, you all have one thing in common. You're Americans. And this country can't stand if its people turn against one another. So be kind. Compliment someone. Hold the door for someone. It isn't going to change the world, but the smallest kindness can make a big difference in someone's life.
We shouldn’t let fear and hate define us, or rule us. We shouldn’t let fear and hate become the norm, and we should stand together. Stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Help each other. Be kind. Even if you can’t understand someone’s struggle, you can still support them in their hour of need. There are people who are more terrified than ever for the safety of themselves and those they love. Minorities, POC, the LGBTQ community [of which I am a part]. Don’t let what’s happened divide us further.
On my way home last night I saw something that lifted my spirits, and it was such a small thing it made me realise how important the small things can be. We need more people like the unknown person or persons who did this.
To whoever you may be, thank you. Thank you for this, and please keep it up.
Overall, I don’t hate it nearly as much as I went in expecting to. I still remember how much I loved Windows XP, and how balky I was about upgrading from that, but in the end, it was a good idea to do so. MegaTON still runs on Windows 7, and probably will for the remainder of its [not insignificant] lifespan.... unless circumstances force my hand, and I have to upgrade it to be able to continue using it. I can plant my feet all I want, but the future is coming, and I will have to fall in line eventually.
When that day comes, I will be able to deal with it. Windows 10 isn’t perfect, but by the time I’m forced to embrace it fully, most of the nastiest problems should be worked out.
When the time comes, I’ll be ready.
I tell Cortana to tell me something interesting. She ‘thinks’ for about 30 seconds, and returns an error message. So then this exchange occurred.
Me: Are you broken? Cortana: [chipper] I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that.
I have a soft spot for humanizing tech, so I can’t even deny she’s endearing as hell, her potential for privacy violations aside.
Wow. So we asked Cortana to sing us a song. Considering we had to turn on the location feature in order for her to cooperate at all, I’m going to guess the fact that we live in Montana to have something to do with her choice in ditty: Home On The Range.
Not gonna lie, this actually made me laugh. Her voice isn’t awful either. She sounds very human somehow.
So, I got Cortana working-- sort of. She can hear us, but we can’t hear her-- turns out during the installation of Win10, it somehow uninstalled Junker’s audio driver. Why the hell?
So there was absolutely no way to change the local username, and I was forced to sign in with my email, which I didn’t like at all. I’m trying to not be biased about it, but all I can picture is shady as fuck people holding their hands out and saying ‘gimmee gimmee gimmee’ for my info, and that makes me bridle more than a little. Ew, come on, Windows, please.
So first of all, the install itself took a hell of a long time, but even installing Windows 7 [as I have more times than I care to admit] took a good while. That’s not an issue, it’s to be expected. However, once it did install, booting up took almost ten minutes. Wow. I thought this OS was supposed to be fast? However: this is a junker laptop, and its specs are pretty poor, so it’s probably not Win10′s fault at all. The laptop is just junk.
When all that was finally done, and the setup process was done, we were off to a fantastic start with the ‘We’ve updated your computer’ message getting stuck in a loop for about 7 minutes. That was... encouraging. Hmm, bad specs on the laptop, or more borked Windows nonsense?
Win10 Experiment
So with the pressing concern that there will come a time that I can no longer cling doggedly to Windows 7, due to many reasons [Microsoft is really pushing this OS, and they’re not going to stop until everyone is using it, but I won’t rant on that because paranoia], I have decided to take a junker laptop and install the Windows 10 OS on it. I chose this laptop because it is a junker and if it gets hopelessly slagged by Windows 10, it won’t be any skin off my back to lose it. I am doing this with the purpose of learning how to circumvent Windows 10′s nastier issues, while learning how to use the OS, so when the inescapable day comes that I must use it, I won’t be completely at a loss. And so I will be liveblogging my experience. Tag: #Win10 Experiment
Here’s a novel idea-- don’t ignore someone for a month, drop them without explanation, then come wanting to chat out of the blue only because you need something from them. That’s shitty as fuck.
It is not good to see people who have been pretending strength all their lives lose it even for a minute.
