Dubai

I know, I haven’t posted for a while but this globe trotting butterfly is continuing to travel and explore the world. One of my latest searches for adventure took me to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and although the trip wasn’t on my bucket list, I had a memorable time.  

First stop, a breathtaking tour of the city. I was impressed by the futuristic feel and look of the architecture and it was hard to imagine the engineering expertise that made it all possible. Especially given the fact that everything was constructed on sand. Next to the posh sail shaped hotel, the  Burj Al-Arab. This truly exclusive hotel provides an amazing view of the Persian Gulf, and the soothing breeze alone is worth the trip. The icing on the cake would have been to actually go inside, but alas, that privilege is reserved for those who can afford to pay the thousands per night to stay there!

A must see is the Jumeirah Palm which is an island that is of course shaped like a palm.  Here you’ll see more luxurious hotels and resorts, and of course, The Atlantis Palm hotel. Believe me, you could spend several hours enjoying the lush scenery or the high end shopping inside, but if that doesn’t cause you to salivate, just visit one of the posh restaurants. Or, spend some time enjoying the  aquarium which features a wide array of marine life, including sharks.

Next, travel to the world’s tallest tower the Burj Khalifa. It didn’t take me long to realize that for the planners and architects in Dubai, the structures have to be the biggest and the best and the tower did not disappoint. You are wisked to the 124th level in a matter of minutes to see the most breathtaking view imaginable!

Afterwards, if you can regain your stomach after the elevator ride down, treat yourself to lunch or dessert in the  mall downstairs, or you could always go shopping...again! 

If you’re able to go to the oldest part of the city, the Dubai museum is a real treat! Learn more about the culture and people via the artifacts, clothing and historic houses. Finally end your day with my favorite past time... bargain shopping! There’s something for everyone at the Souks where you will find gold and silver at affordable prices. Handbags, spices, perfumes... you name it and they have it there. Best of all the markets are a great place to meet and interact with the locals. After all, isn’t that what travel is all about?

Explore Ecuador

For those of us who love to travel, the allure of discovering uncharted territory on your own is a a prime motivator for independent travel.  However, I’d like to suggest another option for your consideration just in case  you’re not ready for the solo experience; escorted tours. 

Now before you decide to stop reading, just consider some of the benefits. All of the arrangements are made for you including accommodations and many of your meals. In addition to that, on an escorted tour, the number of sights and experiences you are afforded would cost you a fortune on your own. Besides, there’s lots of time allotted for exploring on your own. I just returned from an amazing tour to Ecuador, so check out the  highlights of my recent adventure...

Quito the historic capital of Ecaudor was the beginning of this epic trip. With several historic churches, the Presidential Palace and the Plaza among some of the sites you will see in the colonial section of the city, Quito provides an eclectic array of architectural  and natural wonders.  

Later, travel to the Middle of the World Monument to experience the Northern and Southern Hemisphere in an instant!

If you’re like me and shopping is a competitive sport, the Otavalo Market in Otavalo is a must see.  Be prepared to walk and browse and you are sure to find hidden gems.  Sure, there are lots of the usual tourist tripe, but there are also hidden gems, particularly beautiful woven items and carved objects that are sure to satisfy.  After all that shopping stop by Peguche and enjoy  the breathtaking waterfall.

The highlight of the trip for me was the two days spent in the Amazon at the Amazon Lodge.  Although I didn’t see much wildlife, hiking through the Amazon rain forest was a once in a lifetime experience, but it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s a 2.5 hour trek and if it’s not a part of your tour and you decide to do it on your own, make sure you have a guide. This is definitely not a solo experience.

After your stay in the Amazon region, take a visit to El Pailon del Diablo, an amazingly beautiful waterfall.  You can hike right up to the top, but take your poncho!

Check out the small town flavor of Banos and visit the shop where jewelry is made from vegetable ivory.

Then we headed back to Quito, and after a day of exploring, shopping and sightseeing on my own, I headed home. These were just a few of the many exciting experiences I had while in Ecuador, and the best part is I traveled in comfort and didn’t have to plan a thing! So for your next adventure, consider an escorted tour. Believe me, you won’t be sorry!

The Whale Carving

It’s my last day in Sydney, and my two weeks in Australia has been filled with more adventure and unique experiences than most people have in a lifetime. What could be an appropriate culmination to such an amazing experience? Seeing an ancient carving or rock painting! Due to the climate in Sydney, ancient Aboriginal people left carvings in this area of the country.  After a bit of internet research, I learned that there were carvings at Bondi Beach, so I left for Hyde Park where I caught the bus that would take me on my one hour journey to the beach.  The bus ride was pleasant; passing numerous small shops, a large park and residences, it was quite a different feel from the hustle and bustle of downtown Sydney.  When I finally arrived, I took the short walk to the beach, along terraced railed walkways. After about 45 minutes with no indication of a carving, I was almost ready to give up, especially when the locals I asked didn’t seem to know where they were either. However, I decided I had come too far to turn back.  After  more walking, my tenacity paid off when to my left on an unmarked large boulder were two carvings! Just seeing them brought everything full circle for me, and all I had learned was solidified. After taking some time to soak in the experience and take pictures, I continued my walk along the path where I saw the dreaming story that explained the carving. What an amazing way to end a fantastic adventure.

After my adventurous day yesterday, the plan for today is to take a leisurely lunch cruise on the Captain Cook. So I made my way to Circular Quay and since I had some time before the departure time, I visited the Museum of Contemporary Art which overlooks the harbor.  I saw an amazing exhibit on Aboriginal art of traditional art forms and photography that was well worth the time. The museum is also free except for special collections.

Finally it was time for the cruise, and it was such a pleasurable experience. The seafood buffet featured a good variety of foods and desserts.  As we made our way along the harbor, a prerecorded narrative played which described the various historic sites as we approached them. What a relaxing way to spend an afternoon!
