hey, so i saw your non binary gender flag. and I read the description. And i just wanted to say thank you so much, because I didn't know that "genderless" was an option and it just all... i dont really have any words for it but the closest i can come is makes sense. I have been fighting to find something that describes me for a while now and really struggled with it. I wont go into details, but thank you thank you thank you, i'd have never known that what i am is even a real option without this.

I’m so, so happy that you’ve found a word to describe how you feel and even happier that I could be a part of that! 

I also want to note that regardless of whether or not you've had a word for it, how you feel is, was, and always will be valid.

About the yellow stripe in the non-binary flag: "as it is a color often used to distinguish something as its own." I'm having trouble understanding this, could you clarify please? I'm sorry for any trouble

I mean to say that the identities it represents are themselves, without reference to any binary and not in relation to other genders/lack thereof. I'm not really sure how to word this so it makes sense. I went through this conversation last night with someone.

Yellow is used to point out that something is its own. For example: taxis, notebook dividers, sticky notes, store sale markers. The things we mark as yellow are things that are not related to other things: personal cars, the opposite section of the note book, the papers around the post-it, things that aren't on sale.

I don't like describing it in relation to the things it's not, but once again, it is difficult not to do so. I think askanonbinary uses "aliagender" to reference this idea, but that doesn't completely cover what I mean the yellow to represent, rather only part of it.

Sorry, this is hard to explain to people who do not experience gender this way. I myself don't always experience it this way, hence that conversation I had last night trying to make a more inclusive explanation for the colors.

DFAB- designated female at birth (alternately, AFAB, FAAB, or CAFAB)

DMAB- designated male at birth (alternately, AMAB, MAAB, or CAMAB)

hi there. i saw your post about making a non binary flag and i was wondering why non binary is considered separate from genderqueer? i thoughts were that genderqueer is an umbrella term for the world of gender non conforming traits. and besides trans gender and cis gender, are there other distinct terms/ideas? thanks!

This is a common question I’ve been getting.

Genderqueer is more of a political identity, and the myth that it is an umbrella term is very harmful.

Here’s why:

Many, many people do not want a slur like “queer” in, on, or around their identity.

Many people do not agree with some of the politics assumed with ‘genderqueer’ and ‘queer’ labels.

Genderqueer has come to have transmisogynistic implications in its practiced usage, as the genderqueer tags and community resources are almost always geared towards dfab people, and A LOT of dmab people have been forced to change their identity because of this (I can’t find a link to that conversation, if anyone has it, send it in?); Genderqueer is seen as a word for dfab people, whether it’s meant to be or not.

Genderqueer is not an umbrella term, it is a political identity that is assumed by many nonbinary people. The myth that genderqueer is an umbrella term is so widespread that the flag that was supposed to represent us ends up forcing a group of people under an identity that they do not want.

EDIT: Genderqueer and queer are not a political identity for everyone who uses them! They really are often used simply because they are the identity a person feels fits them.

After counting up all the ‘votes’ for each variation of my nonbinary flag (to be separate from the genderqueer flag), it seems this is the most loved! Yay!

Once again, here is the key for the colors:

Yellow is representative of being outside the binary, as it is a color often used to distinguish something as its own.

White is the photological presence of all color/light. This is to represent people who are many or all genders.

Purple represents the fluidity and multiplicity of many gender experiences, the uniqueness and flexibility of nonbinary people, as well as representing those whose gender experiences include being of or between female and male.

Black is the photological absence of color/light. This is to represent agender or genderlessness.

After all the discussion I’ve had with others on the best colors, arrangements, and descriptions possible, this is the final product. Hope you all like!

A call was put out for a nonbinary flag that is separate from the genderqueer flag, and I proposed a fairly well received option.

After some discussion on a few different people’s concerns, I have narrowed it down to these three variations with the following explanation for the colors:

White is the photological presence of all color/light. This is to represent people who are many or all genders.

Black is the photological absence of color/light. This is to represent agender or genderlessness.

Purple represents the fluidity and multiplicity of many gender experiences, the uniqueness and flexibility of nonbinary people, as well as representing those whose gender experiences include being of or between female and male.

Yellow is representative of being outside the binary, as it is a color often used to distinguish something as its own.

So these are my final proposals. If you have a favorite, please let me know! This is a work in progress and nothing is set in stone, so your input is valued.

ALSO, if you have your own idea for a proposal, I believe plantextract is setting up a blog for submissions not only for a nonbinary flag, but for agender and bigender flags as well.

Cheap jewelry for trans women and non-binary folks

I got the following message from a follower:

I’m selling some jewelry and thought that some of your followers might be interested in it? I’m willing to sell it for pretty cheap or even work out trades. If you’re not interested, or if you know of other blogs with followers who would be interested (preferably DMAB, trans women, or nonbinary), could you please let me know?

The post itself says:

(If you’re in need of jewelry to pass and cannot pay anything, please let me know, and if these are not already sold I can work something out for you. Trades will be considered.) This is offered primarily to trans women, dmab and other non-binary folk. I can imagine that buying jewelry at first can be pretty stressful, and I would prefer that these go to someone to aid them in presenting the way they wish to look for not too much money.
