let's talk about Harley Quinn for a second.
No wait. Let's talk about IDOLATRY for a second.
Because I think we've been dancing around this.
Harley Quinn is the most theologically devastating character in the DC universe and I will NOT be taking questions at this time.
1. Had a calling. (Doctor. Healer. Helper. A whole vocation.)
2. Encountered someone she believed was singular and misunderstood.
3. Gave up everything. Her name. Her degree. Her whole self-concept. Just handed it over.
4. Got ABSOLUTELY OBLITERATED for it.
Sound familiar? Because it should.
"but he manipulated her!"
This is what happens when you give the devotion that belongs to God to something that is not God. She didn't just fall in love. She *worshipped.* She rebuilt her entire identity around him. She called herself his. She took a new name. She kept his secrets like they were scripture.
That's not a relationship. That's a broken communion.
The tragedy of Harley Quinn is not that she loved wrong.
It's that she loved with the RIGHT AMOUNT of love.
Just. Catastrophically. Misdirected.
She had the capacity for total, self-annihilating devotion.
The Joker just got there first.
And I think about that a lot actually.
Because some of us are built like that. I'm built like that.
The all-in kind. The rewrite-your-whole-personality kind.
The kind that will follow something into places we have no business being.
The difference — I hope, I pray, God please — is WHERE it lands.
"okay but she eventually leaves him"
YES. She does. And that arc?
That is a resurrection narrative and nobody is talking about it ENOUGH.
She descends (several times, into situations that are frankly not great).
She comes back different.
She fights alongside people she never would have looked at before.
She is not who she was. She is not fully who she will be.
She is in the middle of sanctification.
With pigtails. And a baseball bat.
I respect her more than I can say.
Harley Quinn is simultaneously a cautionary tale about misplaced devotion AND a story about surviving it. She is the idol-worship warning AND the prodigal daughter arc. She is the girl who gave everything to the wrong altar and lived to tell about it.
If that doesn't make her the patron saint of girlies who loved too completely and too fast and are currently somewhere in the process of painful recalibration? I genuinely don't know what does.
Study her. Pray for her. And honestly? Pray for yourself while you're at it.
Some of us got very lucky about who found us first.
