The pilot -> astronaut pipeline makes complete sense but is also funny to me. There's a secret second sky and if you get good enough at doing sky you can do space.

I really love the expansion of Dusty's character in F&R. He's a racer who's been told multiple times before that he couldn't do something and he did it anyway, defying impossibility. Dusty took this experience into learning how to be a firefighter, so he thought he could pull through without listening to Blade's instructions because he's been through hell and back and has come back victorious before, so why can't he do it again? He displays this mindset when he flies over Dotty's recommended speed immediately after getting his busted gearbox diagnosed (was he trying to somehow prove her wrong?), when he does things without Blade's permission, when he tries to pick up water on the lake (and almost drowns), and when he refuses to hide in the mine while boxed in by fire.

I wanna point out that racing is a bit of a selfish sport in the way that it's all about beating the others and winning the glory. Dusty has been shaped to be individualistic during his experience racing, but that couldn't fly as a firefighter. He had to figure out how to work with teammates when he was used to working by himself. I think it's sweet how by the end of the movie, Dusty was asking Windlifter's permission before he does something crazy in comparison to himself earlier in the film just doing crazy shit while Blade is yelling at him to listen. Maybe it was Blade's display of risking his life to save Dusty's that really began to open him up to being a part of a team effort.

And then there's his gearbox. Dusty seems really insecure about it. I get this idea from his refusal to tell anyone at the firebase what was wrong. It took getting yelled at by Blade surrounded by a forest fire for him to crash out and admit that he's got something that isn't working right with him. I think this inability to accept his damaged gearbox goes back to his 'i can beat impossible odds' mindset. He can figure it out, right? I mean, he's the random crop duster from rural wherever the fuck that beat expert racers in a global rally. Id have a bit of an ego if I was that guy too.
