Hearing that Sage was happy was important to Ali, it’d been so long since they’d spoken that she really had no idea what was going on with his life, but as long as he was happy, she was good with that. “Good.” She smiled. A moment later though, she was letting out a giggle as Sage dragged his hand down his face, her head shaking. “Fedoras for days, it’s the next step.” Ali laughed further, her hair brushing back and forth over her shoulders withe each movement of her head. Listening to Sage once again, the smile stayed on her face while he continued, an amused expression lingering on her face as he listed off all the things he had going for him. “Luckiest boy in the whole world, just like I always said.” Ali sighed out, her lips quirking up in a smile. Her eyebrows raised a moment later though, head tilting to the side. “That’s okay though, I wanna hear about what you’ve been up to since sophomore year, that’s why I’m here.”
"Hell nah, no way. Nae and I got a deal that she'd beat my ass if I ever even looked at one of those things for too long." Sage laughed with a short continued swivel of his head back and forth. The smile on his face stayed there easily as he looked over at the girl -any nerves or awkwardness that might have crossed his mind before they got talking far gone by now. "Well," He shrugged his shoulders loosely, leaning his head in the direction opposite her at her comment about him being lucky. Righting his head once again, he glanced over at the hand-off counter when Ali's iced tea was called out, stepping over to grab it for her then holding it out for her to take. "Girl, that's so much time to catch up on." He laughed. "Besides, I know I'm not the only one with things to share about all that time, don't play with me."

Listening as Sage explained his experience with USC and moving back home, Ali nodded her head along with his words. “So you’re happy? You like it there? I know Will and Ava and everyone are there, too, but.” Ali asked, inching forward in line before letting out a laugh with a shake of her head when he mentioned getting her published, face scrunching up the tiniest bit. “You sound like your dad did every time I was over your house.” Ali grinned. Stepping up in line, she ordered her iced tea then stepped aside for Sage to order, watching the conversation between the barista and the boy silently, the air of confidence coming back to her mind as she quirked a brow at him. “Of course they do.” Ali let out a laugh then looked over her shoulder at the busy store. “Outside is good, it’s a little crazy in here.” She smiled softly, leaning back into one of the high top tables behind her to wait for their drinks. “So tell me something else, what else is going on with Sage?”
Nodding his head both in answer and just along with what Ali was saying, Sage pursed his lips before answering. "Yeah, I like it here. LA was cool, and like I said, USC was an experience that I'm never gonna forget, but it's good being home. Family's here, friends are here. And I got a good thing going for me here now, too, at UOF. I'm real good with the way things have panned out after all." He nodded once again. Groaning with a roll of his eyes, the boy dragged a hand down his face at her comment, head shaking slowly. "Don't say that. I'm too young to be turnin' into him, Al. Don't do that to me." He lamented jokingly. Getting over to wait for their drinks, Sage watched the familiar staff on the other side of the bar for a few seconds, nodding idly at Ali's answer to his question about sitting outside before his gaze moved back toward the girl. "I'm varsity team captain." He flashed his teeth in a wide grin before chuckling. "Will and Tristan are on my starting line, and we're all pledged to the same fraternity. School's about all that's goin' on right now, honestly. Football season doesn't leave too much room for very much else. I did just go to the People's Choice Awards casually with a friend of mine, though, that was a thing." He noted with a snort, smiling easily at her. "You get me goin' about me, though, and I'll be talkin' for days, so we better find something else."

Feeling more relaxed than she had on the car ride to Starbucks, Ali was just thankful she hadn’t done anything stupid to make a fool of herself in front of Sage. He was different now, she could tell there was an air of confidence around him that he didn’t have so much of before, she liked it though, regardless. Nodding her head at the mention of his cousin, she let out a little laugh with the agreement, listening to him when he continued. “Yeah, I’m a whole boat load of confused about that, I thought USC was the dream, huh?” Her arm lifted to nudge him with her elbow before the same hand lifted to tuck her hair behind her ear. “Yeah, I’m good, better now that I’m back here, I haven’t felt a home any other place we lived.” She shrugged a shoulder up but then sighed airly at his further question. “Not any good ones.” Ali let out little chuckle as she shuffled forwards in line. “Still doing that starting and getting four chapters in and then deciding I don’t like the idea after all thing, though, typical Alison.” The brunette hummed out, realizing it was getting a little harder to keep from staring at him.
Face scrunching up the slightest bit as she mentioned how set she remembered him being on USC, Sage's head tilted once again before he let out a light laugh. "Things change, you know? I did the USC thing, and it was great. I played a winning Rose Bowl as a freshman, there ain't no way I can't be happy about something like that. But being home is good. I didn't really think about it much 'til I came back. U Florida wanted me on their team after my first run with USC and they were willing to cut a deal with me to get me here, so, here I am." He shrugged loosely, grinning still. Nodding slowly along with the girl's answer to his questions, he found himself letting out a laugh at the familiarity of how he remembered Ali tended to be with her writing. "You gotta finish something. We got people who can get you printed real quick." He noted casually, nodding his head -as if the offer to publish a book was as simple as him buying her her coffee. Getting up to the register to order, he let Ali order ahead of him as he gave a wave to a familiar barista who greeted him with a 'hi, Sage.' "How's it goin', Lauren, you good?" He conversed casually. 'You doing your iced black and white, no whip?' The girl asked, Sage giving a nod in answer with a laugh when he glanced back at Ali. "I come here to study sometimes, and I tip nice, they like me here." He explained absently as he nodded at the guy taking their order. He scanned the bar code on his Starbucks app on his phone to pay for his and Ali's drinks then dropped a twenty in the tip jar before they went to stand down by the hand-off counter. "You wanna sit in here or are you good with outside?" He asked the girl he was there with now.

Coming up to where Sage was sitting, Ali still didn’t know what was about to happen, or what it would mean, but she knew seeing him would one of the best parts of being home so far. The hug didn’t surprise her that much, in fact she was thankful for the lack of awkwardness surrounding the moment. Her arms wound around his back, her chin falling to rest on his shoulder as they lingered in the embrace. “So long.” She answered in a laugh, hands sliding along his sides as they pulled back finally, nodding her head a few times at the mention of being taller. “So are you.” Her nose wrinkled up familiarly, noticing a few other things about him that were different but kept them to herself instead. “Sure.” The brunette nodded, following him inside Starbucks and stepping into line ahead of him then turning back towards Sage. “Okay, Micah didn’t give me much other than you being ‘alright’ and Ava just told me to talk to you myself,” Ali paused, shaking her head a little before continuing. “So how are you?”
Letting out another light chuckle at her comment about him, Sage gave a tilted nod of his head, grin remaining on his features. He knew that there were a lot of things about the both of them that were different, physical and otherwise, but he figured they'd get to that eventually -that was kind of what they were there for, after all, he figured. Following behind the girl inside the store, he stopped closely behind her as they got into line. Brow kinking upward as she turned to speak to him, he breathed out a snicker at the mention of his cousin and their friend, head tilting. "I mean, better than alright, I'd say, but that sounds about right for Micah." He noted. "I'm doin' real good, actually. Going to school, playing football still. Shockingly enough not at USC anymore, obviously." He chuckled, making a face momentarily before smiling easily once again. "How you been, though? You good, too?" Pausing, his grin inched wider as he recalled a detail particular to Ali. “Finish a book yet?”
See You Again
ali-southwick:
After a good amount of badgering from Ava, Ali had finally gotten around to texting Sage, and it didn’t take long into that for them to decide to meet up. Curious and a little nervous as she got ready to go, she said a quick goodbye to her father before heading towards the Starbucks they’d decided on. It’d been years since she’d seen Sage, in person, at least, and the closer she got to the coffee shop the more she felt the excited butterflies in her stomach. It was probably the uncertainty that made her the most nervous, she had no idea what this was going to be for them, but she had a pretty good idea that everything she’d felt for Sage before was going to push it’s way back up into her head and heart pretty quickly. Pulling into a parking spot in the lot, she quickly checked her make up in the rear view mirror and tucked her keys into her bag then got out of the car to make her way over to the door. Seeing him sitting outside on the patio, she felt a sudden tightness in her chest, like she was more nervous than she had been moments before. “Hey.” Ali called before getting all the way over to him, a smile on her face as she lifted her hand to wave at him when he’d looked up at her, trying to school everything she was feeling inside from bubbling to the surface.
Glancing up from his phone at the sound of a greeting, Sage had almost assumed it was someone else coming by, meeting with another of the people there at the store, but as he looked to see the source of the voice, a smile twitched at the edges of his mouth. Pushing up from the metal chair he was sat in, a replied 'hey' left his lips as he slid his phone into his back pocket and took the few steps remaining between the two of them as Ali approached him, too. For a split second he almost hesitated, almost stayed standing with this tiny amount of weirdness in front of her, but then he realized there was no real reason to hold back -he was different after the years that had passed, but he wasn't that different, he didn't treat people different just because he hadn't seen them in a long time. So he pulled her into a hug, both arms winding around the girl's shoulders and squeezing gently as she was pulled against his torso. "Damn, it's been a long time." He chuckled, shaking his head beside hers. This hug lasted a handful of seconds longer than most, and he realized that, but he wasn't going to make a big deal out of it. Slowly easing back from the embrace, he took a brief moment to glance Ali over, a grin on his face now. "You're taller than you were before." He snickered with another shake of his head before it jerked subtly sideways toward the door into the coffee shop. "You want somethin'?"
See You Again
It was rare that Sage ever really had a hard time figuring out how to approach a situation -he was generally pretty good at figuring out even other people's shit for them. Finding out Ali was back in town out of the blue, though, he hadn't really known what to do there. The obvious option was to talk to her again -because it wasn't like there was any reason for him to not want to do that. It just felt a little weird, he realized. They hadn't spoken in years, and before she'd had to leave back then, there were a lot of feelings there. He hadn't thought about those in a long time, but he wasn't dumb enough to think that they wouldn't find themselves surfacing again when he saw the girl. Sitting at an outside patio table at the Starbucks they'd texted about and agreed on meeting at, Sage scrolled absently through his phone, hand rested against the metal table top. He hadn't ordered anything yet, planning on getting Ali her drink, too when she got there, so instead he sat and waited for his company, wondering idly how it was going to go.
