The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published on 10 April 1925. The novel received mixed reviews and sold only 20,000 copies in its initial release, and by the time of Fitzgerald’s death in 1940, it had sold only 25,000 copies. It has been reported that in the last year of Fitzgerald’s life, 7 copies of the book were sold, 5 to Fitzgerald.
In 1942, the Council on Books in Wartime selected The Great Gatsby as one of the titles to send to soldiers overseas, and shipped more than 155,000 copies, re-introducing the book and boosting its reputation.
