what do the numbered caskets mean in Unwanted Guest?
shut up Tamsyn i know this is your alt and for the last time im not helping you brainstorm ideas for alecto
Oh I'm pretty confident on this actually, because it's how I more or less figured out the ending.
The numbers are a distraction as far as I'm aware, made to look like the exact sort of logic puzzle that Dulcie told Pal wouldn't be the case here. Sometimes the numbers end up in spots that correlate to them, but if there's cipher or anything to the order they move around in I've never seen anyone mention it. But what I CAN say is:
There are only seven coffins. Most of the big things come in nines, so why seven here? What ARE there seven of?
Dead Lyctors. Dead saints.
I was slightly off the first time I read, in that I lowkey expected there to be a secret 8th coffin, but it makes sense their wasn't, since Ianthe is still alive. The principle is the same though. Of COURSE he's inside number 8: the Eighth Saint to Serve the King Undying.
I ain’t reading allat, there are 7 coffins because Ianthe can’t count to 9
Oh Wise Prophet! Who will be getting married in Alecto?
Thank you for your proper address. This is a complex question, but one which I have been pouring over numerous tomes and records to resolve.
The question itself is a flawed one, for while Tamsyn certainly said there would be a “wedding” in Alecto, I have evidence to suggest that it will not host marriage of any sort. (See ¶7 of my short dissertation: “What’s in a Name - The Locked Womb”). To not deride your intelligence, and for the sake of brevity, we’ll assume that you have read this work, and that you understand how chastity pertaining to the Schoß des Geistes bars all forms of emotional connection.
However, the wedding has still been foretold, the show must go on. How does an author reconcile a wedding with no marriage? By marrying those who cannot be married - and through blasphemy horrendous enough to call off the wedding entirely. The wedding between Valancy Trinit and yours truly will be interrupted whereupon I see Valancy’s mom in the crowd and fold immediately. Thank you for your question.
I’ve always found it fascinating that Noodle specifically mutated to have six legs. I have always believed that Aim fled Lemuria, after it was blasted with thanergetic energy, taking Noodle with her. While most may postulate that ‘Noodle mutated a pair of limbs’, or ‘Noodle was always a six-legged creature’, I propose another solution - one which fills in some background for some scarcely seen characters.
The remainder of the “Dogs to invite to birthday party”, within the Dramatis Personae. For those imbeciles who fail to recall these critical characters, firstly, shame be upon you. Secondly, they include:
Brown one…, four legs
Stop It…, four legs
White-and-black one.., three legs
Spotted beach dog…, three legs
Noodle, king of dogs in secret…, six legs
How convenient, that the two unaccounted for legs of these dogs happen to complement Noodle’s extra two legs. Tamsyn does not partake in coincidence. The mysterious additional legs have been tithings for Noodle, who serves as King, all along. Mutated by thanergy to become a thief of limbs.
And how convenient that two dogs, still with four legs remain. A six-legged dog may reference a number of things, but an eight-legged dog? There is only one creature that could be alluded to with this. Noodle must be assembling legs, in order to reach his truest form, as the Sleipnir from Norse legend.
What does this imply? It should be blatantly obvious. In Alecto the Ninth, Nona will ride an eight-legged Noodle into the final battle, and following in Odin’s footsteps, will staple Paul’s head to a tree for guidance and counsel.

Whilst fans have thoroughly discussed the implications of the ubiquitous “Pool Scene” within the series’s inaugural work, few tend to shed light on the intrigue sparked from “The Pool Scene” that occurs within the second novel.
