“I think chicken farmers would love that. I don’t think I’d like all those feathers though or how hard it would be to try to keep chickens in my apartment. I think the grain and wheat would be a lot easier,” She laughed at the thought. “I believe it’s mostly seasonal. I know a lot of people have it for Christmas but you can make it anytime you like no matter the season.”

“Yes, I think so, too. Though the feathers could be used for pillows, I suppose. Perhaps to line coats? But, yes, at least you can keep grain and wheat in containers.” He hummed thoughtfully and nodded. “I’ll have to make some -- or better yet, perhaps find someone to make me one. Maybe we could go to the same bakery, to get your donut cake and my mincemeat pie.”

Ally sighed. “You’re always pulling that mom shit on me now.” She cracked a smile, shaking her head. “Fine, fine. I just hope she’s half into her after work martini when we tell her.” She said, going into the car, thanking Alfonso to getting them. “I have to say, I do have the best older brother in the world. I know older brothers who hated their younger siblings, but you, Lucas? You’re always there for me and I love you so much for that. Even though you’re annoyingly right all of the effing time.” She giggled, hugging Lucas. “Oh, I forgot to tell you. I have a surprise waiting for you at home.” As the car traveled back home, Ally got out and walked into Lucas’s home, knowing that Charlotte and the babies were put to sleep by now. Going in and kissing her daughter on the forehead goodnight, she walked downstairs in her pajamas and smiled over at Lucas. “C’mon! I wanna show you!” She exclaimed and brought him into the living room, going over to the DVD player and putting in a disc. Up on the big screen television were the home movies their father, Nicholas, made, that were previously on VHR. “Look! I put our old home movies on DVD, so we can watch them whenever. Aww, look how cute you and I were!” Ally exclaimed, pointing to the screen where little three year old Ally, with cute little blonde curls, clung onto Lucas as both of them were in the pool. “Awww. That was our family vacation to Martha’s Vineyard. Aww, you’re teaching me how to swim. Remember how I threw a fit whenever my swim coach would try and teach me? Only you could.” Ally giggled, snuggling up to her big brother. 

Lucas smiled slightly and shrugged. “It’s the truth,” he said. He settled into the car with an inaudible sigh of relief, leaning his head back against the soft leather interior. “I love you, too,” he said, a chuckle escaping him at her words. “Well, it’s my job as your older brother to be right all the time.” He raised his eyebrows in interest as Ally mentioned a surprise, following her into the living room a few moments later, after checking in on his own children and letting Lucy know that he was home. A smile broke out across his face when the images flickered across the screen. Thirteen-year-old Lucas had been as thin and angular as a colt, with the barest hint of his current height and musculature. “I thought I would never be able to actually teach you because you wouldn’t let go of me,” he said, laughing softly. “That poor swim coach. She taught me and Layne just fine.”

“—Hey, just a heads up, it’s almost last call. Can I get you another drink?” he questioned, tapping his fingers against the counter. “Maybe get you a cab?”

“Oh, no, thank you,” Lucas said, looking up at the younger man with a smile. “I’m fine.” He lifted the drink he already had in front of him. “We’ll be leaving soon, assuming the rest of my group can find our drunkest member.” He chuckled softly and shook his head. “We’re celebrating a 21st birthday.”

Lucas looked at the girl, nonplussed, at being ordered around by this crass stranger. “Of course,” he said, his voice cool and polite, his distaste well hidden. He grabbed two plastic bags, filled them both with ice, and wrapped them in paper towels before handing them back to the girl, his expression smooth as a statue’s all the while.

Lucas looked over at t the young man, utterly unimpressed by his attitude. “You’re the one who chose this radio station,” he reminded him. “So it would appear you have contentions with your own taste in music, not mine.”

“Do I look lost?” He wondered out loud. “I was trying to avoid the lost look by walking confidently, but I suppose I haven’t gotten it nailed yet.” His shoulders lifted and released in a quick shrug. “I’m Levi, from Ireland. Currently in Montreal Canada. At least I know that.”

“Well, asking to borrow a stranger’s cell phone is usually a last resort, and considering we’re near the airport,” Lucas said, shrugging with a slight smile. “Your walk was very confident, I was just making a conjecture.” He handed his phone over. “Are you visiting, or have you moved here?”

“Glad to hear it,” Sienna said with a smile, the amount of germs resting on that toy made her skin crawl. “Yeah, it seems to be a common thing.”

Lucas smiled slightly. “I have a feeling that’s an occupational hazard you’ll have to become accustomed to,” he said. “I can’t think of many doctors I know who don’t deal with this issue. I have a similar problem practicing law.”

“I think it’s a natural impulse, as well, being able to feel – in a way – what someone close to you is feeling,” she offered. “The same way an infant is likely to be irritable when their mother is upset. I think it’s closer to the teenage years that they grow out of that.”

Lucas nodded. “Well, at least we both have some time before we have to deal with that stage,” he said, with a slight smile. “It’s incredible enough that the twins are over a year old and Christopher is approaching three months. I can’t imagine having teenagers.”

“Sometimes I wonder if children know their parents better than we give them credit for. Adults often overlook how observant and understanding children can be. Yes, I’m sure that’s a comfort to them.”

“Now I think we’re thinking a bit too much into it. I think you probably can eat it for dinner. I know that chickens weren’t the only object people paid for things with in the 1800s. I’ve read where people used grain and wheat and things like that. It was like a whole country economy system going on. It was basically just bartering,” Roisin laughed. “Mincemeat is chopped dried fruit and spices. Sometimes people add distilled spirits but my mother never does.”

Lucas laughed. “No, no, you mentioned chickens first, and that is our new economy. Just chickens. Chicken farmers would be the new wolves of Wall Street. And feathers would be everywhere. Grain and wheat would be much neater.” He listened as she spoke. “That sounds delicious. Is it seasonal like pumpkin pie, or is it just a commonplace dessert?”

Having now returned with a bag for a couple of the brownies, Isabel nodded and laughed lightly. “Well…. yes, it does seem to rain a lot,” she admitted. “But don’t know if it rains as much as people seem to think it does. No more than anywhere else in Northern Europe at least.”

Lucas chuckled. “I know. Many of the times I’ve visited, it’s been perfectly lovely. Spring days are especially enchanting, but then, I suppose that’s true of many places. Montreal included.”

“Oh, yes, of course. It’s going straight in the washing machine.” Lucas smiled slightly. “So I take it you’re often bombarded with pleas for medical advice.”

“Paying for chickens at a butcher’s shop? Actually I think that would be quite funny to see. Or well it would be funny for humans to see. I don’t think those chickens would be very happy about it. I think someone should draw a cartoon of that,” Roisin joked. “True and at least pecan and apple have something that’s good for you in it. Apples and pecans are healthy. Chocolate crème pie is just sugar.” She looked at him jokingly in shock, “You’ve never had mincemeat pie? Really? It’s like the best type of pie ever made!”

“But could currency chicken also be eaten? In that case, it could be very confusing if someone accidentally handed over a chicken meant for payment to have for dinner.” Lucas chuckled softly. “Perhaps we could have a pardoning day, the way the President of the United States does for turkeys on Thanksgiving. A lucky chicken is spared every year.” He nodded. “Exactly.” He laughed a little and shrugged. “Really. I’m not entirely sure what mincemeat is, to be honest.”

Lucas smiled softly. “Unfortunately, I don’t have such power,” he said. “I have a feeling the dinner companion you expected didn’t show up?”

Ally sighed, nodding. “That’s good to hear. I feel so bad for the poor girl he attacked as well. He’s a monster, isn’t he? Why someone attack perfect strangers? It doesn’t make sense to me.” She said, shaking her head. The chief of police came into the office, looking as sheepish as ever. “Please forgive me, Senator Harrington, Miss Harrington. We are so sorry for that display out there. We want you and your family to know that we’ve transferred the prisoner to the tombs and he’ll remain there until the trial. Until then, if you need anything, don’t hesitate to let us know.” Ally nodded, smiling softly as she clung to Lucas on her way out. “Don’t tell Mom about this, okay? She’ll be horrified and you know that poor chief will probably be fired if you do.” 

Lucas gave a slight shrug. “I’m sure we’ll hear his reasoning at the trial, though I can’t say I care very much as to why,” he said. “His defense team will doubtless craft some sob story or other, but no tragedy gives someone the excuse to hurt others.” His lip curled slightly into a cold, polite smile. “Thank you,” he said, his tone like ice. He shrugged again as he led Ally out. “Ally, I’m going to keep Mom up to date on what is going on. It’s only fair. I highly doubt you would want to be kept out of the loop if you were in Mom’s position and Charlotte was in yours.”

This was great, just great. First time in a foreign country, all of his belongings in two suitcases and a carry-on and he couldn’t figure out the international calling thing to let Holly know he had arrived. Levi looked around and approached a stranger. “It might be biscuits to a bear, but have you got a phone I can borrow?”

Lucas raised an eyebrow at the strange phrase, but could assume it was something along the lines of ‘pointless’ or ‘bothersome’ considering the context of the conversation. “Yes, I do,” he said, pulling his phone from his pocket. “Are you lost?”
