Lucinda was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and grew up with the best of the best in their wealthy Chicago suburb. She went to the best schools, had nice clothes, and always got the latest in toys and gadgets. She was never left wanting accept in one thing: love. And attention. And in having her parents actually care about her at all in ways other than superficial. To the outside world, the Caldwell family was picturesque, with her father Arthur owning a string of fancy resorts and the couple seemingly living the high life. Arthur had his secrets though, and when his affair with his assistant came to light, instead of leaving him high and dry, her mother Agatha did the opposite. She decided to be the picture-perfect wife, always dutifully at his side, and made sure she got pregnant a year later, essentially solidifying her place in his life (and his wealth).
Luce had been nothing more really than a pawn, her mother getting pregnant out of spite because her child would have his name and his legacy, not the child of the other woman. No, Jocelyn Bergeron would fade off into nothing, and her husband's indiscretions would go along with her.
So Luce grew up with that cloud over her head even if she didn't know it. She never knew her father had cheated on her mother, never knew she had a half-sibling out there somewhere. All she knew was that her father was always on business trips and her mother was too busy making dirty martinis and hosting lavish parties to ever really pay her any mind, leaving the 'parenting' up to the various nannies Lucinda had had growing up.
She attended parties when needed, showed her face when Arthur needed to be seen as the doting father to the perfect little girl, but other than that, she was left to her own devices and ultimately, her neglect eventually caught up to them all. Luce was a decent student, but she never really wanted to excel and have more pressure on herself. So while her parents were at swanky events, she was at her own parties, sneaking out and running off whenever she could. She got her nose pierced with a safety pin at sixteen in her friend's basement the same night she had her first hangover, learned how to make a bong out of a Gatorade bottle. By the time she was nineteen she already had no less that six tattoos smattered along her body, had drank nearly every alcohol under the sun, and when she was also nineteen was when her world really tilted on its axis.
She found out she had a brother.
Jace coming into her life was nothing short of a shock, but honestly...it almost felt like a puzzle piece slotting into place, the final piece revealing the whole picture of why her family was the way that it was. She found out about her father's affair and her mother's plans to keep Arthur hers. Luce found out she was merely a contingency plan to keep her cushy lifestyle. She was never wanted but she was always needed. It made sense then, why her mother would just hide Luce's own indiscretions under the rug and keep her looking prim and proper to the public rather than kicking her to the curb. It was a shock, to say the least.
And as much as her mother didn't want it, Luce quickly developed a relationship with her big brother, the two hitting it off so easily that it honestly upset her because all this time she could have had this relationship. Her whole life had essentially been spent in the shadows, but that was over now. She was angry at how Jace and his mother were just cast off, heartbroken that her mother really only saw her as a tool, and saw her father with little more than disdain and pity. She wanted nothing more to do with them really, so she struck up a deal: let her leave and don't cut her off, and in exchange she'd keep it all under wraps too. She wouldn't make any scenes or cause the perfect Caldwell family to have any negative press. She just wanted to leave.
In agreement with her dropping out of college (under the guise that she would be taking a gap year and travelling) Luce spent that first summer with Jace on his boat, feeling free and excited and finally in some semblance of control in her life. She spent some time in New York with him too, but ultimately she did go back to Chicago- just in her own place this time, getting herself a little studio apartment and, with a lot of back-and-forth's and more compromises, she agreed to go to school, attending for two years and getting an associates degree in Liberal Arts- which was better than nothing at least, as she told her mother.
All the while Lucinda continued coming into her own; she made new friends, had a string of relationships over the years. She lost count after twenty tattoos and about eight (twelve) different ear piercings, changed her style a bunch of times (currently in her boho, free spirited vibe), travelled in the summers and she spent time with her brother when she could, finally just fully in charge of her life.
She just recently turned twenty-four, and when she found out that Jace's beloved grandmother had passed away and he was permanently moving back to his hometown in California, Luce figured maybe she should tag along. Her life was okay in Chicago; she still had access to her father's money, had her same little apartment, a steady job and all, but it was pretty stagnant, so maybe a move to the other side of the country could be just the ticket. So without telling her brother (or her parents) Luce quit her job, sold her apartment, and packed up her stuff- her two cats included- and headed off to the west coast, excited to see what life would bring her in Aurora Bay.
