Context: My character (a monk) had taken first watch while the party was camping, and found a high elf girl slinking about in the shadows. Having pinned her to a wall, she attempted to identify her.
Monk: Who are you? What is your name? High elf: My-… my name is Bread! Monk: …Bread. Your name is Bread. ‘Bread’: Yes! Me, OOC: Can I make an insight check to see if her name is actually Bread? DM: Sure, roll for insight. *I roll for insight, and get a nat 1.* DM: … DM: Her name is ABSOLUTELY, DEFINITELY, 100%, Bread.
It was later revealed that her name WAS Bread, and she was the sister of our high-elf sorcerer, whose name was Soup.
Just an idea . . .

Things that made me 😊 smile today: ➡️ One student brought me this adorable basil plant and said "hey Ms. Graham, even though you're not a mom, you're a mom to us 💕 ➡️This sign on my door says where I am (usually it says "here!" but occasionally it'll say library/meeting/etc.) I was out on Friday and came in today to find an updated message from one of my students 💜 . . . #teacherlife #iteachtoo #elateacher #english #secondaryela #kindness #love #teachingday139
call for change: studyblrs
I have had this blog for about a year now, and I’ve come to realise the unattainable perfection of studyblrs. I created this account to motivate and educate myself and I feel as though these ‘perfect study notes’ hold unrealistic expectations. This is why I have decided to post things that are more realistic, educational and have a positive impact on the community. Please reblog this to spread the message: You do not need perfect notes, every stationary item, a macbook, top grades or an aesthetic study space to be a studyblr. All you need to do is do the best you can.
An important message
Hi Ate Chesca! Pwede po bang humingi ng example ng format ng reviewer mo. Gusto ko lang sanang kumuha ng idea or guide. Salamat po :)
credits to owner. Yey for wonderfullifee for this! Anyway, I take notes like this. (most of the time).
theilustrado’s tips:
put arrow for side notes
use symbols, illustrations and diagrams when taking notes
let’s put emphasis on: “when a prof repeats something, WRITE it down”
be concise. avoid too much words
use highlighters / colored pens for KEY TERMS and KEY WORDS
put a box or circle for info that are important (and if you want that info to be seen right away)
use sticky notes for tables or illustrations that need your understanding and critical thinking
use lowercase / uppercase / variety of font sizes / font style
make your notes clean
and of course, read your notes and reread.

Ok here’s my story and why I’m walking out. This is my fourth year teaching in Oklahoma and after taxes and insurance I take home $2,311 a month, $27,732 a year. I could make about 20 grand more by moving to Texas or Arkansas, and many teachers are doing just that. Oklahoma is losing qualified teachers every day. These kids deserve the opportunity of a great education but we cannot give them that if all our teachers are emergency certified or completely over worked.
I teach six classes each day. As of today this is how many students I have in art class: 2nd Hour- 30 students 3rd Hour- 27 students 4th Hour- 32 students 5th Hour- 19 students 6th Hour- 23 students 7th Hour- 30 students
This is way too many students for one class. Especially art class. I’ve had to cut back on the fun, ambitious, and exciting projects literally because there isn’t enough room on the table for 32 kids. I literally do not have enough chairs for 32 students. This photo is something every one of my students is familiar with. This chair, or cheek-pincher, is what my students have to sit on. Most of the chairs in my room look like this. Once they get to this point it’s only a matter of time before the bottom goes completely out. Today a student actually carried his chair with him to sharpen his pencil because he got in early enough to get a good chair. I’ve gotten a few new students and had to throw a bottom-less chair away so tomorrow I’m having to bring in a couple of folding chairs I have here at home. That’s why I’m walking out.
These kids deserve so much better than this.
They deserve teachers who are qualified to teach.
They deserve classes that are small enough that the teachers can actually spend some time with each student.
They deserve CHAIRS.
They deserve a quality education just as much as kids in surrounding states.
This is about so much more than a raise. It’s about the future of Oklahoma. That’s why I’m walking out.
And this bill that just passed is no where near enough to make an actual difference. I’m still ready to walk out and stand my ground.
Edit: Wow thank you all for the shares and messages of encouragement! Hundreds of people have asked if they can donate anything so I created an amazon wish list. https://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/2698WSN52ULQN
Sharing this post which is going around Facebook. Teachers in Oklahoma are striking on Monday to win a payrise for some of the worst paid teachers in the US and better funding for schools in the state. You can also donate to their strike fund here.
DISCLAIMER: I was an American high school student, so this is focused on U.S. students, so some of this information and advice may or may not apply to students in different locations. I also applied to college my senior year and went right into undergrad after high school, so my advice is a little skewed towards high schoolers intending to attend college. I tried to incorporate information for students who may wish to follow other paths as well, but my knowledge in that area is much slimmer. That being said, this is meant to be as inclusive as possible for ALL high school students, and I encourage everyone to follow their own paths! No one way is more valid than another.
This link with ideas for what to do with your summer may be helpful, as I mention productive summers repeatedly in this guide
This guide was heavily inspired by a post from @studyvet, (now @candydsgn), who made a kickass freshman year guide that you can see here. Other inspirations and posts I recommend are this post from @xinchaostudy, and this one from @studyboba!
So. Today in class we assigned Macbeth roles to students to read. When I asked the class who wants to be Lady Macbeth, a young man raised his hand. I kind of stared at him like “Lady Macbeth,” and he nodded like “I know what I’m about ma’am.” So then the student who ended up as Macbeth raised his hand and said “HE’S THE ONE, HE’S MY WIFE!” So I said “yeah sure why not,” and the entire class period they were blowing kisses to each other and winking at each other, and every now and then Macbeth would say “I’m the luckiest man on Earth” and Lady Macbeth would put a hand to his chest, and be like “BABE!”.
I just stared at them, knowing that they CLEARLY have never read ‘Macbeth’ before, so… all this lovey dovey… I don’t know if I have the heart to tell them the truth.
Update:
Macbeth is absolutely willing to fucking throw down for Lady Macbeth. Has already threatened a wall, a desk, a few students, a textbook that was neither his nor Lady Macbeth’s, and me
Lady Macbeth is enjoying the attention and has begun to use this new connection to his advantage. I’m starting to suspect he’s read ahead in the play.
Macbeth is going to end up living in detention at this rate.
Macbeth has no idea that he is the tragedy of the story. Claims to be the hero of the play, fails to see the irony in this
Macbeth slowly scooted his desk across the classroom to hold hands with Lady Macbeth. He was not subtle.
Macbeth has proposed on several occasions. Lady Macbeth just laughs and says they’re already married.
Macbeth’s girlfriend is in the class with them and is “totally not jealous or anything just thinks this whole fucking play is a waste of time”
Lady Macbeth should probably be a theatre major at some point, he fucking rocked Act V scene I
Other teachers and staff are emailing me about the “lovely lords”. Lady Macbeth now refuses to answer to anything other than Lady Macbeth and is always very upset when people don’t call him by his proper title.
hiiii would you be able to give me some tips for writing an essay for English?? I'm kinda stuck. and I always feel like I do it wrong so any tips would be greatly appreciated!
SEX.
State
Example
eXplain
(don’t @me. It’s supposed to be SEE or SEEX but don’t lie, when you saw “sex” y’all decided to read on)
The tip with essays is to have a clear structure. This helps your reader to understand the argument you are making.
By no means is this structure the only structure. This is probably targeted at the middle school - high school level.
But it’s a basic structure which you can tweak and add to depending on your level of study (e.g. university) and discipline (e.g. Lit, history, pol sci).
So here we go.
State
Topic sentence
What is your paragraph about?
What is the key idea or argument in this paragraph?
If I needed a one liner about this section, what would it be?
Example
Back your argument up with examples
These can be quotes, literary techniques etc.
What evidence supports your topic sentence?
Explain
How do your examples support your argument/ thesis
To what extent? Are they strong examples? Why? Why not?
Gaps
If you have absolutely no idea, basically answer the godamn essay question here. Seriously. Re word it as a statement and incorporate your example.
If you really have no idea - then reconsider this paragraph. Delete the damn thing.
Example 1: 10 minute paragraph
[for educational purposes only]
Let’s say I only have 10 mins to plan and write a paragraph on our good ol’ Irish poet mate Seamus Heaney:
Using the SEX Method, I’d plan out a paragraph like this:
Then when it comes to writing an essay, I’d reword those points, fleshing them out as below:
Ta-da, one paragraph down, 2810178641 more to go!
If this was a ‘take home essay’ I’d refine some of the sentences. They’re a little clunky + verbose (esp that last sentence). But for a quick in class exam under timed conditions, fuck it, my argument is there, MOVE ON.
WRITING IS 90% EDITING ANYWAY. SO GET IT ON THE PAGE.
For info re introductions, conclusions etc see the full post here.

new year, new planner 💕 I've heard amazing things about @lillypulitzer planners, so I figured I'd hop on the bandwagon this year. So far so good! It was also time for a new lanyard - I swear by these @verabradley ones! Hopefully these will keep my spirits up as summer comes to a close ☀️
Hi! I'd love to be a part of your teachblr group! I'm a secondary English teacher in the US and I'm trying to make a network of teachers on tumblr :)

how to study as a busy student
i personally go through this a lot because i have to balance saturday band, honor band, auditions, performances, history club, national history day with school and nonexistant friends. so here u go, friend!! this is my advice to keep up with your (busy) studying!! ha see what i did there im so funny
1. have a planning system. this is a no-brainer. but honestly you’re going to need something to help you keep track of all your deadlines AND your afterschool activities. it doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy; heck it can even be on your phone. but make sure you’re keeping track of everything.
2. use all the time you can to do your homework. if you’re really behind or you have a lot of homework and not enough time to do it at home, do your homework when you can during school. this does NOT mean trying to set the world record for fastest writer while your teacher is collecting the homework. this means on the bus, waiting for your food/the bus/your friends, those down periods during and between classes, during sports practice, and even during lunch. however do NOT make a habit of this!! i get that its a lot, but please still try to have a life!!! <3
3. set aside a day a week to solely catch up on school work, and another day just to relax. i usually have saturday as my school work day and sunday as my day to relax and prepare for the week. this may seem contradictory, seeing as you may have sports practice or rehearsal on saturday or something. but think of it this way: you’re already going to be working your butt off that day. you might as well keep that flow going and get all your school work together and catch up on any missing assignments. you can also use that sunday off as your motivation to work hard because youre being rewarded with a completely free day.
4. do your homework on friday. please. just do it. this kind of follows the same concept as above: you have school that day anyways, so keep working your hardest. now, if you have no friends like me, this’ll be easy. but if you have plans on fridays (which you should, seriously, go out), stop working 1-2 hours before you have to go somewhere. you can continue any work you havent completed on your catch-up day.
5. drop one or two things. this sounds really painful!!! but being in a lot of extracurriculars and having a nice application/resume is not as nice as your mental health. not being able to balance too many things at once will stress you out and make you sick. like, i used to be in drama club and i also had piano class on wednesdays. once i got older, i realized that these things looked nice on my honor society application, but i didnt have time for what really mattered. (plus i didn’t rly like them anyways.) if you can work your way around it, fine. but otherwise, keep the things close to your heart and drop what you absolutely don’t have time for.
6. if worse comes to worse, talk to your teachers. they will understand, if you’re struggling to be a well-rounded student and keep up your grades at the same time. this doesn’t mean lie or use your teachers as an easy way out. but rather, if everything becomes too overwhelming, talk to someone.
i really hope that helped @ the original anon who asked me this question! sorry this was so late! i’m quite the busy student myself hahaha
Feb 23, 2016 | As requested, some screenshots of my psych notes this week.
A short textbook note-taking tutorial
I use tables whenever possible to organize materials, and as you can see I format them differently depending on the content they contain. For vocabulary and situations where I’m employing tables in lieu of columns (which conserves space), I’ll make the border white, but for tables like the ones on pages 1 and 2, I’ll keep the border there for definition.
I title each section with the subtitle given in the book and underline it, then make a vocabulary list (bolding terms), and insert my tables. For actual notes (as shown on page 4), I try to keep it as simple as I can with lists instead of blocks of text.
Afterwards, I’ll go into Quizlet and make a set of flashcards (the last image shows the beginnings of what flashcards for this set of notes would look like). I’ll cut out unnecessary content from the notes (and trim examples down to prompts rather than full explanations), and in examples like page 4, I’ll condense each numbered point and its sub-points to the section I bolded, which summarizes the general idea.
Hope this was helpful! If this is received well (gets over 100 notes, let’s say) I’ll continue to post samples and explain my note-taking methods!
