Kel O'Neill & Eline Jongsma's EMPIRE: an immersive documentary about how the conditions of the past shape our lives in the present.
You need to use Google Chrome to watch this documentary.
A while ago, I penned a fairly angry response to something circulating on the internet – the 21 Habits of Happy People. It pissed me off beyond belief, that there was an inference that if you weren’t Happy, you simply weren’t doing the right things.
I’ve had depression for as long as I can...
A network in the brain that helps control daydreaming seem to be slower to develop in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
By: Benjamin A. Winnick This is the first post in a series entitled “Issues I face as a working adult with a disability” Do I tell others about my disability? If yes, when? And if no, why not? And ...
"This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it." Alive Inside, Audience Award recipient, Sundance Film Festival, 2014
Researchers say European commission-funded initiative to simulate human brain suffers from 'substantial failures'

I saw this piece by Daniel Goleman when it first came out in May, but I came across it again while reading the New York Times this morning.
"You don't hear too much about hair care for little girls with autism, especially African American girls with autism who are natural, because  it's not as prevalent in girls, number one, and not as prevalent in girls who are African American and black." ~Simply. Natural. Natasha
People with Asperger's Syndrome have a tendency to perseverate on unproductive ideas, which can impact a job search or employment.
Barbara Bissonnette is an employment coach who specializes in helping adults with Asperger's Syndrome (yes, I know it's no longer in the DSM-5), autism spectrum disorder and nonverbal learning disability find suitable careers. There's great advice about job hunting and navigating the workplace environment in her newsletter.
Another phenomenal woman has left us this month. Ruby Dee was more than a gifted actress. She was also a civil rights activist. Â
“It is failure that guides evolution; perfection provides no incentive for improvement, and nothing is perfect.” ― Colson Whitehead, The Intuitionist
I read The Intuitionist a couple of months ago. It's a novel that rates very high on the quirky scale. Set in a 1960s world of elevator inspection (yes, elevator inspection), the plot deals here with race, class and gender with a barbed sense of humor. I was laughing out loud and imagined Janelle Monae as protagonist, Lila Mae Watson. If you read the book, you might understand why. [Hint: It's the black suit.]
I wish someone would turn this novel into an independent film, but I have my doubts about that happening. Quirky, black cinema—no matter how good it is—rarely receives the financial support it needs to make it into theaters—not yet anyway.Â
"There's a steady stream of hype surrounding the pluses and pitfalls of classroom tablet computers. But for a growing number of special education students tablets and their apps are proving transformative. The tablets aren't merely novel and fun. With guidance from creative teachers, they are helping to deepen engagement, communication, and creativity." ~ iPads Allow Kids With Challenges to Play in High School's Band
Here's a Q&A I conducted not too long ago with Jeffrey Money, clinical social worker at Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream, Illinois. Money is a Ph.D candidate at The Institute for Clin...
This the latest post from my blog THE ODD BIRD. Please take a look. If you're a parent of an adolescent with nonverbal learning disability, you might be interested in contacting Money about his research efforts.Â
"The new science…says these problem-solving executive functioning skills that we need most are housed in wiring in parts of the brain that remain “plastic” and can be coached well into adulthood — even into old age." ~Can Brain Science Help Lift People Out of Poverty?
