Theoderich Montgomery is the name you expect from a vampire who’s going to tell you about watching France revolt and America come into existence, Hitler’s rise to power, seeing Kennedy’s assassination. Unfortunately, he hasn’t seen anything out of the ordinary yet. Sure, in seventy years, maybe, he can boast about Obama being elected, but truthfully, he was laughing in the back of his class while they watched the inauguration live. That was about a year before they found the cancer, anyways.
For Theoderich, things get blurry for a while, most historical events are in his periphery at best. He was in and out of hospitals for about four months before they figured out why he was losing so much weight, but it was too late by then. The Montgomery’s tried chemo anyways, since his they had the money to blow, but the only thing Theoderich got from that was a sick new hairstyle: thinning.
It isn’t that he’s flippant about the whole thing. It was a truly horrendous time; he was constantly in pain, he looked fucking terrible, and near the end there, he was pretty sure he’d have rather they hadn’t found the cancer, and he could’ve just ridden out those last six months crossing lines off a bucket list, maybe. Who cares about trial runs for drugs that his parents were essentially blackmailing to get him in? Who cares about an extra four years when it’s punctuated with no quality of life and an inability to bathe himself? He was pretty sure he was going to die every single day at the end anyways. It was a lot of lying in bed, breathing slowly, and vomiting bile into those blue hospital bags. His room smelled like hospice, a gross scent that was vaguely a combination of chemical cleaner, a hint mold, and a retirement home.
He doesn’t actually remember any part of his turning. His parents paid for his scape-goat from death. To this day, Theoderich isn’t sure of whether he should be grateful. He can’t quite wrap his head around it yet. He doesn’t know who sired him, in any case, and he sure does hope that doesn’t come back to bite him.
Things were rocky after he was turned. His parents were trying to work it out for him, to keep him home, to try and explain his sudden comeback from stage IV terminal stomach cancer. It didn’t work out: Theoderich, more than anything, was in shock and lashing out constantly, and he didn’t want to live at home, didn’t want to live with them, and didn’t know if he wanted to be alive at all after what had happened, for a little while.
When they found Sumner, they found their solution. Theoderich was allowed to go there with a stipend per month and rent covered, so long as he still sought employment and he was required to pursue his education. Now, Theoderich’s only just settled in, just over his first year anniversary of being a vampire (which he has such minimal knowledge of that he’s worried how he’s actually meant to survive), overall absolutely reeling from living on his own for the first time, trying to sign up for a GED course, and not knowing a soul (vessel?) in this place.
Theoderich hates more than most anything that withdrawal from feeding gives him the same nausea that chemotherapy used to.
He really, really wants friends. Which isn’t to say that he’s desperate, more just that when your friends stop visiting you because you’ve been living in a deathbed for over a year, and they’re busy having a Life in College, it gets a bit lonely.
Alright. He’s kind of desperate for friendship.
