“Bad Liar” (Imagine Dragons cover) So far this year, my creative thoughts have not really been focused on music. I've half-heartedly tried to write a couple of songs but gotten distracted pretty quickly.

Favourite songs of right now (5)
Favourite songs of right now (5)
I haven’t done one of these posts for awhile and I’ve been listening to a lot of new music, so it seemed like the right time to showcase some new favourite songs of mine. These are all of an indie-rock/alternative-indie vibe, so if you’re into that kinda thing, you’ll probably be into some of these!

“Hannah Hunt” (Vampire Weekend cover) Lately I've been trying to expand my vocal range by working on my mixed voice. I didn't even know it was a thing until I watched
“Colors” (Barcelona cover) In my quest to continue finding ridiculously easy ukulele songs that don't suck, I rediscovered this beauty, an old favourite of my teenage self.

MUSIC: The obvious musical highlight this month was seeing The Killers live, but it was also a good month for new music. Late March, The Vaccines released their fourth album ‘Combat Sports’ and it’s all I’ve been listening to this month. At the moment my favourite is “Out On The Street”, but “Rolling Stones” and “Young American” are also fantastic. The whole album feels rougher and fresher than…

Young and bored and 24
My 24th birthday was on Sunday and like a proper adult, I spent my birthday at the zoo for the second year in a row. I hadn’t been to Wellington Zoo since they got capybaras and I’ve been excited to see those ridiculous creatures in person ever since I first learned what a capybara was. I spent far too long staring at them excitedly – if you click the right arrow below, you’ll get an indication…

November notes of happiness
November notes of happiness
I’m saving most of my writing desire for NaNoWriMo but when nice things happen, recording them here is my favourite way of remembering them:
Over the weekend was my grandma’s 95th birthday, so we had a party with a lot of my extended family, most of whom I haven’t seen in years.
I’m a week into NaNoWriMoand feeling conflicted. I haven’t exercised my fiction muscle in so long and I feel like…

You're not cool for hating pop music
Your taste in music means nothing other than which particular vibrations tickle your eardrums.
As a quiet and insecure 14 year old, music felt like a way for me to define myself. I wasn’t sporty or outgoing, but I didknow about music. I thought because I could read music, I had a better understanding about what was good music. I had this idea in my head that only people who truly loved music listened to obscure artists, because we went out of our way to find music we liked. I prided myself…

"Liability" cover (it's NZ Music Month!)
“Liability” cover (it’s NZ Music Month!)
It’s May, which means it’s NZ Music Month! NZ Music Month is a celebration of the wicked homegrown talent of kiwis, with radio stations playing more local tunes and people focusing on how awesome kiwi musicians are. Lorde is very probably NZ’s most famous musician, so I figured May would be the perfect opportunity to cover her new song (no, not the one about green lights, the other new song). I…

April '17 Favourites!
April ’17 Favourites!
Every month, a million different things seem to happen and April has been no different – I feel like I’ve fit an entire year into the past 30 days. As well as catching up with people I haven’t seen in forever, I’ve also managed to score both a flat (which I move into today!) and a job (which I start tomorrow!). This month was huge, and I get the feeling it won’t slow down any time soon.

Am I good person or am I just lazy?
Am I good person or am I just lazy?
While catching up with a friend I hadn’t seen since before I left for Canada, I mentioned that I was now a vegetarian. When she asked me why, I explained that my flat in Vancouver didn’t have any decent appliances to cook meat so it felt like an unnecessary expense. Eventually, I found I didn’t miss it so fully embraced the vegetarian lifestyle.
It made me realise that a lot of the decisions I’m…

TRAVEL: This month I’ve been to five different Canadian provinces (ON, QC, NB, PE, NS) and I’ve now seen enough of Canada to decide on my favourite places in this country – Vancouver, Banff, and Montreal, in case you were wondering. Our Canadian road trip is going past rapidly – I can’t believe I have less than two months left here and I also can’t believe how much I’ve squeezed into this time.

Thankful Canadian October feels strange to me - I'm used to October holding longer days, temperamental spring weather, and not much else.
Sometimes travel is hard
Sometimes travel is hard
After four years of study and twenty years living in the same place, I left my beautiful New Zealand for a year of the unknown in Canada. I felt like I was suffocating in Wellington and desperately needed a change of scenery. I still love Wellington and think it’s probably the best place in the world, but adventure was calling. I needed a new chapter to start, and that chapter couldn’t be in New…

Sea Alley Music (I made a youtube channel!)
Yesterday I finally did something I’ve been thinking about doing for years – I uploaded a video to my youtube channel.
Because the mind is a ridiculous thing, I finally got the motivation to do this once I moved halfway across the world and away from my piano, the instrument I can actually play competently. But I’ve long been a fan…
