“I do not sink zat zis is anysing to be impressed by,” Tamera retorted.  She could probably hold this position for a while, but she was going to get tired eventually.  “If zere is less of a chance of me being in someone’s way, zen ze smaller rink is better, oui.”

“Nonsense!” He flexed his hand, offering to help her stay steady, “I’ve seen more than my fair share of people stand and immediately fall over. So you’re already ahead of the game!”

He lead her over to the kiddie rink, which was thankfully uninhabited due to it being the middle of the week. George was skating backwards the whole time, carefully giving Tamera instructions on how to move and keep balanced.

“Oui, merci,” she said.  While he was off turning in their shoes, she made a vague attempt to stand using the bench they’d been sitting on.  It was mostly just her standing up by keeping her hands on the bench though.  She didn’t dare try to fully right herself.  As expected this was sooooo much harder than walking.  She was going to fall for sure the minute she tried to stand up straight.

After successfully taking the shoes over, George returned with a surprised look on his face.

“Look at you go!” He said, holding his hand out to her, “They’ve got a smaller rink on the far end there, so you can practice and get used to it. It’s really different, isn’t it?”

“Zat sounds easy enough,” she replied.  The skates slid onto her feet, and she tied the laces nice and tight.  The fit was a bit snug, but she was sure that was better than them being a bit big.  Once she had them on though, she wasn’t so sure she could stand up.  She’d kind of wanted to not make George carry her boots back, but…  “Zis… seems like it will be ‘arder zan I sought…”

George had grown to be a very observant young man, as it meant a lot to be able to discern people who could or couldn’t be trusted in his life. So the scar did not go unnoticed. He’d also learned how to keep certain things to himself. Perhaps he’d never bring it up, it was her business, after all.

“No worries,” George said, standing and spinning a little. He held his hand out, his other hand holding his shoes, “Here, let me take your shoes back to the counter. You can wait here and then I’ll help you onto the rink.”

“Uhm… do you ‘ave a size five?” Tamera asked, somewhat sheepish about it.  “For adults.”  She felt the need to specify, although it was probably apparent from her size that she wasn’t wearing a child’s size five.

The rental guy nodded eagerly, turning around to retrieve the requested shoes. Lucky enough, they did indeed have a pair of shoe to fit Tamera! George did his best to not sigh in relief over it, but he was still glad everything was going so smooth so far.

“Come on, let’s get these on and I’ll bring him back our shoes,” he said, pointing to a nearby bench, “Good thing about these bad boys, they basically tie like a pair of boots. Then you can just take the laces and tuck them back into the shoe so they don’t get stuck in the wheels.”

“So, we give zem our shoes?” Tamera asked.  She’d expected something like a locker, but maybe that wasn’t how things were done in most places.  She looked down at her work boots- thick and sturdy leather that went well above her ankles (in case of a repeat of a previous event).  She’d had to have them custom made bcause it was hard to find stuff like that in her size.  And a realization seemed to hit her.  “Do zey ‘ave sizes for everyone?  I am… a bit on ze small side…”  Fortunately she wasn’t into shoe shopping.

“Yeah, I’m sure you won’t have to worry about size.”

Which is to say, they definitely had child sizes, but he wouldn’t specify that. The shoe rental counter person seemed a bit more lively than the front counter person, smiling as they walked up, “Hey, folks. What size shoe can I get you?”

“I’m a size ten and a half,” George said, holding his card out for him to take, “If you don’t do halves, I’ll just do an eleven.”

The rental guy nodded, then looked over at Tamera, “And what about you, little lady?”

“I do not ‘do’ anysing zat uses electricity…” Tamera clarified.  Any and all technology was completely beyond her.  The only reason she could use her PokéNav to any degree was because she’d been forced to learn, and even then it was only to the point that she could make a call and add contacts.

Tamera looked up at the building.  Aside from the sign out front displaying the name, she wouldn’t have known what it was for.  She might have thought it was a stadium or a gym.  Once they were inside, she couldn’t stop looking around.  Everything was… weird.  She’d never seen most of it before, and she wasn;t sure she understood the lighting.  She was fairly distracted until the notion of paying came up, and then she seemed to snap to attention like a Poochyena hearing a whistle.

“Ouais.”  Tamera unflinchingly pulled out her wallet and handed over the money to the woman at the counter.  SInce all she really had to do was contribute to rent and utilities, she had no money problems.  If anything, it was piling up, and she had no idea what to do with it.

“I'll admit, I don’t usually get treated on these little outings,” George laughed, picking up the two cards. As they walked away from the counter and towards the shoe rental counter, he handed one of the cards to her, “This is how we’ll get our shoes. We tell them our shoe size and name, then they put our name on the card and they sit with our shoes while we skate.”

There were a few people already on the rink, skating about. One of them was even going backwards!

“Well, thank you!” George laughed as the skating rink came into view. It was attached to a video game arcade, but he had a feeling the arcade may be a little overwhelming for her. So just the skating rink today, “I bet you’d look really good in a suit. You should ask Mrs. Hart to make you one some time, she’d probably love the opportunity.”

Fawn turned towards the small, back alley parking lot beside the large building. She sped up just a bit, finding a parking spot for them while they carefully navigated the expensive car between the other parked vehicles. She found a spot easily, standing in it as George pulled in. She hopped out and over the car at the last moment, so as to not get stuck inside.

“Madame Lily ‘as seemed to focus on putting me in a skirt a lot, so maybe I can convince ‘er to try somesing else…”  She wasn’t sure how much a suit would suit her either, but, in her opinion, anything that didn’t involve a skirt was an improvement.  And with the long dresses she was always worried she’d ruin the hem.

Tamera waitd until the car came to complete stop and stopped making noise before trying to get out.  Although it took her a few awkward moments of fidgeting with the door handle to figure out how to open it.  Cars really made no sense to her.

George couldn’t help but chuckle a bit as he went over to help her with the door, “You don’t do cars much, do you?”

“So, this is the Lumiere Skate Rink.” He explained as he walked Tamera to the entrance. Fawn stayed behind to nap in the car, “It’s pretty popular on the weekends, but it tends to be really dead during the week. What with people working and all.”

The inside of the building was mostly dark, with colorful lights focused on the large, oval-shaped rink in the middle. There were a few arcade cabinets, as well as a prize counter and a concession stand. George suspected they probably wouldn’t be doing snacks. He led her over to a lady, who got their names and shoe sizes.

“It’ll be P2000 for the time and the skate rental,” she said, sliding a pair of cards across the counter for them.

“I believe this outing is on you today, Miss Tamera,” George said, though he had his hand in his pocket and on his wallet already.

George had to stop himself from commenting on the number of times he’s fallen square on his chest. No need to ruin the surprise just yet, he thought.

“Well, your friends certainly know how to pick clothes out for you,” he said, “It was a very nice outfit and you looked really good in it, even if you’re not used to that type of clothing. I remember my first time wearing suits being pretty awkward, honestly.”

“Merci, mais mes amies know a lot more about zose sorts of sings zan me.  And I did still need ‘elp wis it…”  She had no idea about clothes, but she knew Aura had very fashionable tastes, and she had done a good job of picking things out for her.  Nothing she’d given her had been too flashy for her, just not what she was used to.  And then Chii had dumped a bunch of dresses and skirts on her.  “I sink I would be better wis suits zan dresses, mais I sink you wore zat one suit very well.”

“I gotta admit, body armor is probably perfect for your first time roller skating,” George laughed. Fawn took off trotting ahead of them, the humans following behind in the car. The wind gently whipped around them, the radio playing very softly under it, “So, that cute outfit from the last time isn’t part of your usually going out on the town wear?”

“Ze armor only covers my collar and chest, so I do not sink it would be very useful for zis,” Tamera replied with a wry laugh.  The only real protection it provided her was against being shot or stabbed.  It was made to protect her heart and ribs but nothing else.

“Ah non… It was somesing some friends gave me, mais I am more used to my uniform, so I ‘ad never worn it,” Tamera admitted sheepishly.  ‘I am used to only owning one outfit, so I am a bit confused now zat I ‘ave so many.”

“I guess the car is really more for me than you, huh? I forgot that you Rangers are more on the athletic side than us pencil pushers, hehe. Still, it’s a beautiful day and a drive would be fun, right?”

He smiled up at her sheepishly before reaching out to open the passenger side door, “And you look great today, by the way. That’s part of your work uniform, isn’t it?”

“Ah, désolée.  I ‘ave been told zat even among Rangers my stamina can be a bit abnormal, so I do not usually sink too much about walking anywhere unless it will take longer zan I want it to.”  And even then, she generally used Pokémon for transport.  The last time she’d been in a car was when they’d brought the student to the the testing grounds for the Academy.  That… had not ended particularly well.  

She got in the car, fumbling a bit with the seatbelt because of how unfamiliar it was, and sat somewhat sheepishly, aware of how odd it probably looked.

“Oui.  I wear ze underarmor and shorts for work.  I wear zem more often zan anysing else, so I am more comfortable in zem.  Zere is a vest too, mais I ‘ave been told zat body armor is not appropriate for anysing zat is not work-related.”

While the last meet up was pretty easy to get to, just a little walk up from the PokeCenter, the skating rink was a bit further away. Which was no problem for George and Fawn. Fawn appeared first, a few minutes before George pulled up in a deep blue convertible with the top pulled down.

“Good afternoon, Tamera!” He called out, waving to the young woman, “I hope you don’t mind, the skating rink is a ways away, and I didn’t want us to get tired before we even got started.”

“Ah, salut!” Tamera gave a small wave.  

Lily had convinced her to, once again, not wear her uniform, but she had let the Ranger at least wear the red armored shorts and black underarmor she usually wore beneath it.  She’d gotten away with wearing the short-sleeved underarmor she usually wore beneath her vest too, but the vest itself had been forbidden and replaced with a red tank top that she wasn’t entirely sure how she came into possession of.  The only other notable thing on her was a somewhat worn black pendant with a red jewel in the middle.

Tamera stared at the car, a bit confused.  She had no problems with walking, but he wanted her to get in, right?

“I’m always happy to help expand someone’s horizon!” He said, pulling his phone out, “I’ll check their hours and then we can make plans later. Oh, how’s your food?”

“My food is good.  I don’t sink it will upset my stomach, so I should be fine.”  She looked down to the Pokémon and nudged Sol with her leg to get him to eat.  He scoffed at her, but complied.  He was weak to his daughter after all.

“I’m sorry to hear that you have to be so selective with you food,” he said, “But I’m glad you managed to find something that agrees with you.”

He finished up his panini, setting his napkin and Fawn’s empty bowl on his plate, “Ah, excellent as always. I’m very glad that you came out with me today, Tamera. This was very fun, getting to meet your Pokemon and all.”

Conveniently avoiding an explanation of what roller skating was and what all it involved. Including falling.

“Sure.  I am supposed to be learning about zese sings anyways.”  Not that she usually put much effort into it.  She needed help just to go to a movie.  Regardless of whether she knew this or not, she was going to need a lot of help…

“C’est ça va mais I ‘ave no idea ‘ow to ‘roller skate’.  Or really what it is.”  She had probably seen it at some point but it’d never been pointed out to her.  Things like that tended to slip by when it came to her learning about how to be a normal human.

“That’s perfect then! Learning to roller skate is way more fun than just knowing,” George laughed, “And I’ll be there, so I can help you out. What do you say?”

“I tend to ze berry trees if zat is what you mean.  Many of zem are still only a few years old, so I like to check zem after big storms.  I ‘ave also never been to an ‘arcade’.  New Mauville supposedly ‘ad one, but it shut down before I started living zere.  Apparement parents didn’t like it.”

“Well then, in that case, why don’t we try out roller skating for our next little outing together? I hear there’s a nice one on the South Boulevard here in Lumiose. Not terribly busy on the weekdays, I suspect.”

“Let’s change the subject, shall we?” George offered, “What do you like to do whenever you’re not at work? I know you model for Mrs. Hart, but I get the feeling you do that more for her, rather than for yourself.”

“When I am not working?  I work most of ze time, even when I am not.  My assigned Routes are 119 and 120, so I spend my free time zere playing wis ze wild Pokémon and ma famille.”  Or getting nagged about her eating habits.
