“Oh, yes, yes! I almost forgot to ask for mint as well,” Olivier cried over Aya’s inane prattle. “Aha, I think we shall have the Gardening Club picked over by the time we are done today.”
Not as though it mattered. Duel Academy, as Olivier knew, seemed to have an endless budget to splurge on the extracurricular activities of its students. Of course, such a budget probably came from the generous donations of past alumni and celebrity duelists from across the globe. His father was most assured contributing to the school’s abundance since Olivier began his attendance.
There was an odd smell as he prepared; having crossed the room again with a few long strides to collect a bottle of red food coloring. It was a stinging sensation that prickled the inside of his nose and prodded his throat, almost causing him to gag loud enough to disrupt the club.
Cheap perfume? A knockoff scent Olivier had known plenty of times whenever his presence was obligatory during a business meeting. The kind plastered faces wore with their gaudy jewels and pounds of makeup with their pathetic words in attempt to placate his father.
Of course, he didn’t realize the horrid scent belonged to Aya before Cass approached them with her inquiry. Olivier turned a little and sucked in a quick breath, flinching and placing a hand at his chest- startled at the blonde girl’s appearance.
“Ah, Madam President,” Olivier said with a gasp, still trying to catch his breath. “I suppose Mademoiselle Aya and I will be making raspberry crepes. Since she is new, I shall volunteer in assisting her for today. Next time you will help yourself, yes?” He turned to Aya who nodded enthusiastically, twisting her braid and blushing brighter than the food coloring in Olivier’s hand.
“I have indeed seen your snack crepes before.” Regaining his composure, he placed the bottle in Aya’s hand and motioned for her to return to their working station. “Unfortunately I never had the pleasure of enjoying one myself. As for teaming up, I shall go wherever you place me and wherever I am needed.”
Cass didn’t mind, and smiles when Oli offers to help Aya for the day. How kind! Overhearing this, Rei is relieved and keeps her distance.
“Everyone.” The club members quiet themselves to listen to her. “We will all begin by making the batter. That should give our lovely volunteers enough time to return with our fruits and mint. Then we will separate into our teams and prepare toppings.”
Cass pauses, as always to give her club members a chance to speak. When none do, she continues.
“Because of your experience, Oli, I’d like you to tend to the crepe maker and make some crepes with Aya-chan. Cutting fruits and making other toppings won’t take long; the girls will take turns in making crepes with your guidance.” Cass turns to the rest of the club. “I will help with cutting fruits and making the other toppings. Please do not hesitate to ask me for help.”
Despite the club members, except Olivier, receiving a basic home economics class in Duel Academia. Some remained uncomfortable with their knifework, though it improved as they spent time in the Baking Club under Cass’ guidance, and now under Olivier’s. Cass continues to remain vigilant in case someone cuts themselves. Their first-aid kit is always filled and ready to be used in times of crisis.
Cass assigns everyone to their respective teams with the input and requests of her club members over their teams. When Cass’ gaze lands on Rei, she requests to cut fruit; the sound of the knives chopping on the board is soothing, an activity she’s become acquainted with since living with her grandmother.
Two bushels of mint, and many berries, especially strawberries, someone even requested bananas; what a wonderful day this’ll be with so many colors and flavors.
“Let’s get started, everyone!”
Excited cheers fill the room, some grab ingredients, while the others grab whisks, bowls, and scale. Cass gives the two girls her little list to send them on their way, she thanks them as they leave the room.
“Aya-chan. Before you start, please wash your hands again. It is unsanitary to handle food after touching your hair.” Cass smiles kindly, not meaning any harm.
The girls who overheard sing “wash your hands!”, though they were not as harmonious as the short and tall girl, they burst into harmless giggles at their actions, and Cass joins them.
Rei wants to smirk, she’s aware of the outsider’s true nature; there’s no way she’d be pleased with this.

Yuji chuckled and rubbed the tip of his nose. “Well… I wasn’t exactly being serious about the camping out thing. I mean, there are people who will camp out in front of stores to be the first to get the newest phone model or game system. Not so sure if there are food enthusiasts who would do the same.”
Neither Yuji nor Saiga had the money to afford such an experience, but it was another thing to see residents of Neo Domino queued up in front of a store in the dead of night- freezing cold or pelting rain, just to acquire the newest shiny thing.
“We’ve been working on our D-Wheel bit by bit with the money we’re making, and we have to keep up with the ever changing meta game, so that means finding the right cards, too. You should come and watch us duel sometime! We might look rough around the edges, but Saiga and I together are a force to be reckoned with!”
Yuji clutched a fist and thumped his chest with all of the confidence he could muster. He had to. If Yuji didn’t have something to cling to with every fiber of his being, then he would spiral from being overwhelmed. Being away from his grandfather and uncle, the creature comforts of Satellite and the simple routine of life.
He stopped mid step and cocked his head, a finger uncurling from the fist and jabbing forward. “Is that your flower shop over there?”
“Oh, I’d love to watch you two in action!” Cass says earnestly, honored by his invitation. Duel Academia is full of aspiring talents. It would be amazing to bear witness the beginnings of two potential pros! A common story in her school of nobodies turning into celebrities thanks to the school’s incredible education system.
“If you want, I can show you my textbook: A Duelist’s Guide to Strategy.” Cass offers kindly. “My teachers say this book is essential to any serious Duelist’s career. ”
One of the first books on their list and one of the more expensive and heavy textbooks; the bible for any aspiring professional Duelist. It covers the creation of different dueling strategies, combinations, and in-depth examinations of famous duels. The book is updated often and it gets heavier and heavier each update. Cass is thankful she won’t have to carry it around for long.
”Ah! You are right!” So caught up in talking of his dueling aspirations, Cass forgot where they were heading. Her eyes look from his finger to the familiar large banner ‘Castellanos Blooms’. Its windows are blocked by wooden shelves filled with myriads of potted flowers of different colors and variety. The potted trees that Cass mentioned earlier are on the ground. Cass did a quick sweep before she left, but the foliage on the floor looks as though she’s never done it. There is always work at the shop!
“Welcome Minamoto-san to Castellanos Blooms!” With a smile, Cass opens the door, the doorbell ringing as she does so. It rings one last time when the door closes behind them.
There’s more foliage on the floor leading to another room. The spot at the cash register is devoid of presence except the small portrait of a nun, welcomes them. Wrapping papers and ribbon racks are on the wall behind the counter along with twine and scissors.
The store is white and spacious. It could be easily mistaken for a pottery shop with the different pots on display if it weren’t for the large flower fridge.
“Mama? I’m back!” Cass calls out. She smiles and gestures for Yuji to follow her in.
An older woman walks in from the other room. Her eyes are a familiar green with the addition of gold flecks, and the dark brown of her hair has started to dull and grey strands take their place. She appears very much as an older version of Cass.
“Mama!” The mother and daughter embrace, though they haven’t been apart for long. “Cassiopeia mou.” Her mother responds in kind.
“Minamoto-san, this is my mama; Katerina.” She switches from Japanese to Greek as her mother is more comfortable in their first language.
“Mama, this is Minamoto Yuji, he is a friend from school.”
Katerina places her hands in front of her and bows slightly as taught of her.
“Good afternoon, Minamoto-san. It’s a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for taking care of my Cassiopeia.” The woman speaks slowly and formally. She’s spent many years in Neo Domino, yet the fear of a mistake in her speech still haunts her.
jckoftrades:
Yuji inhaled slowly; a breath to cleanse his troubled heart and ease any tension that had built up in his mind. For once he allowed himself to look around at the beauty surrounding him instead of training his eyes forward like Saiga did. Saiga never looked behind him or stopped to watch flowers sway in the wind like he and Cass did.
Did the weeds that sprouted greyish-green with crooked stems and spiked leaves from cracks in the pavement stop to envy the well-tended blooms? It seemed their only goal was to survive just the same, even though their presence was ‘unsightly’ to the one who tended the garden.
I only want to feel the sun, too.
It was a silent lament, the last one Yuji allowed himself to think before walking alongside the bright girl.
“Saiga has been my best friend since we were kids. We’ve done a lot together, and once we finish everything at Duel Academy, we’re going to join the tag team Riding Duel league. That’s our dream, anyway!” Yuji stuck his chest out and laced his fingers behind his neck, summoning all of the confidence a young man could.
“Oh! Yeah, I think it’s especially pretty at night. I like going to the top floor of our apartment building and watching the city lights. I mean… you can’t see the stars in the sky, but in Neo Domino it’s like the stars are just within your grasp! It makes me feel like anything is possible.”
From every corner and alley, Yuji inhaled deeply the myriad of smells that emanated from nearby shops and stalls. Though the cake had filled his stomach significantly, he still felt pangs of hunger brought on by the scents.
“Hm? Aw, I don’t think I have been there yet. I wonder what kind of special ingredients they put in the buns to keep them so popular! You’ll have to camp outside of the shop next time if you want some. All the best things come to those who wait… or something like that!”
“Tag team Riding Duel League?”
Cass’ eyes widened in surprise, quickly replaced with excitement. Everybody at the Duel Academia is so hardworking! It shouldn’t surprise her that even members of the staff have large ambitions like this.
“That’s amazing, Minamoto-san! Ohh!” Cass gushes. She presses her hands together as if she’s already sending a prayer to God. “I can’t believe I know someone before they become famous! I will pray that the two of you find success!”
Her smile widens even more at Yuji’s optimism: it saddened her for a while that she could not see the stars properly, but his opinion helps lighten her heart. Her disappointment cannot make the stars clearer, but a change of mindset make the stars feel closer.
“Camping? Like wait in the morning hours before opening time?” Cass says, not liking the idea. “That doesn’t sound safe, Minamoto-san. And besides, how can someone wait so long? There are no bathrooms nearby.”

Olivier’s attention was momentarily snatched away from the newcomer by the flower of the week. His stare drifted from the back of Aya’s now neatly braided head towards Cass and the parcel she carried in her arms.
“Oh, look at that!” he exclaimed leaning in the better examine the soft blue puff. “Maman was always partial to white hydrangeas, so I have not seen the blue variant in a long time. Hum. I remember thinking they were like giant cotton balls when I was a child and that I wanted to sleep on them.”
The memory was soothing, just as much as the hydrangea flower now sitting before them. He would have felt the pang of homesickness if it weren’t for Cass’ sudden story of the apologetic emperor who gifted his love such a flower.
“I think I would have to gift my beloved an entire garden for my unfortunate schedule! Anyone who has to put up with me deserves that much, I think.” He joined in the laughter with the other girls.
Exhaling, Olivier clapped his hands together and glanced from face to face. “I think we should all get started! Would anyone volunteer to take a list of things we might need from Gardening Club and go fetch them? I know I am in dire need of raspberries. Madam President, I believe we are all stocked on basic ingredients. I took a small inventory upon my arrival this afternoon. It’s just that we will need things from the Gardening Club, as you said.”
The two inseparable girls threw up their hands giving soft ‘Ooh, pick me!” sounds. Olivier laughed and reminded them his only need was for raspberries.
He turned and breezed by Aya, offering her a small smile before wandering back to the cabinets to retrieve a pan and measured ladle.
“I must wonder what sort of crepes you will be making, Sakamoto-san,” he said coolly, making sure no other members of the club could hear his addressing. “I look forward to seei-”
“Monsiuer Boulanger.” A smooth voice interrupted Olivier, pushing between him and Rei.
Aya and her silken braid now swishing coquettishly, pushed herself up against the closed cabinet door and studied Olivier with rapidly blinking eyes and slender fingers that wound around one another like small serpents. He could only blink in response, lofting a brow and inquiring whatever the matter was.
“And, please, there is no need to call me ‘Monsieur’. Just ‘Olivier’ is fine.”
“Oh! Right! Well, I was just wondering if I could get some professional tips or something, you know? Crepes are just… super delicate and all, and what if I made them look ugly!”
“Before you two go,” Cass calls out from the sink, taking her time lathering her hands in soap making sure to wash up to her wrists and in between fingers. “We should ask everyone what kind of crepes they want, we might need more fruit!”
“Oh! Fresh mint to garnish would be lovely!” Says a fellow club member, and her smile widens when Cass agrees with her. Why wouldn’t she? Mint offers that spruce of color!
After drying her hands, Cass pulls out her pink little sakura-shaped sticky note pad, scribbling down a list with her pen that’s just as pink, on top of it is a glittery fluffy bouncy ball that sways as she writes.
Rei doesn’t appreciate Olivier approaching her once again, and looks at him with little amusement when he speaks to her. Then her view is thankfully blocked by a blonde braid. Now is her chance to escape; the pair deserve one another, she thinks.
Off Rei goes to provide her list of ingredients to Cass: strawberries, blueberries, whipped cream, and fudge sauce. It’s too sweet for her liking, but it’s what her grandmother loves and has told her about many times of her youth as a Neo Domino girl enjoying life.
‘How could I have a flat belly when these things are around!?’ Grandmother would say, and the blue tattoo makes her grin look wider than normal.
“Hihi you two! Aya, what crepes will you be making?” Cass walks up to Oli and Aya, oblivious to what is happening. “And Oli, we should make extra batter to make snack crepes. Have you ever had one? It’s basically a crepe in the shape of a cone that we sell as street food.”
Rei has gone to find the crepe spreaders which were hidden in the back drawers. She pulls out the pair and washes them. Even though she doesn’t plan on eating, crepes filled with dust doesn’t sound appetizing.
“We should also divide up into teams: one to make the crepes and other teams to prepare dressing like the chantilly cream and fudge, and another to cut the fruits.” Cass spoke to and looks at everyone, willing to listen and compromise if a member has suggestions. “Keep in mind everyone, we have ice cream and brownies in the freezer that we can use to!”
The Baking Club freezer has containers filled with goods that they can take out to de-frost and eat. One of their recent tests is a batch of ruby chocolate brownies. Delicious pink chocolate with the taste of berries, and a tart aftertaste. It thrilled the club members that the chocolate was not only delicious but matches most of the décor as well.
jckoftrades:
The woman’s serpentine strike against Olivier’s hand felt of little consequence. It was almost as if he couldn’t feel pain anymore, after all that the Boulanger lord had endured but heartbeats ago, he stood as a stone with an unreadable expression.
If it weren’t for his verdant green locks and small stature, one would easily mistake Olivier for his lord father in that breath of time.
From behind them, Tullis grunted and straightened his posture to the best of his ability, though it was obvious to anyone his injuries were finally starting to disturb the man. “You have the honor of addressing Lord Olivier of the House Boulanger, my good lady.”
Olivier swallowed back bile tinged with the grit of dirt, eyes never leaving the dejected woman still pressed against the wet earth as though she had been borne from it. Thin rivulets of blood streaked from his bottom lip and nose- the offered hand falling away to his side as he turned to the mountainous man behind him.
“This is Tullis of House Bloyer- my bannerman.” Olivier spoke gently, his words carrying, even in the distant rancor of the forest. “You were traveling in a wheelhouse, yes? It was wrecked just outside of these woods, and your retinue, I’m afraid, they’re…”
“All dead,” Tullis interrupted. “I took note of the sigil carved into the door: a bottle with flowers springing forth. That’s House Sakamoto… unless I’m wrong.”
Olivier inhaled, though shakily, and partially bowed his head. “My lady, though we are sorry for your loss and any injury these spiteful men may have put upon you, we must return to camp at once. We have healers who will tend to you, and then I shall see to it that you are returned home.”
“Battlefield is no place for a woman,” Tullis grunted.
The Boulanger lord took no heed of his bannerman’s words and, from the hand pressed close to his side, he presented the dagger she had thrown at the Aymard soldier. With tentative steps, he crouched down, placing it upon the ground and pushing it towards her as a strange sort of peace offering.
“Will you tell us your name at least?”
As the men spoke, Rei mind remains in a state of confusion despite the situation being less precarious. She’s suddenly aware of the heaviness of her heart and its violent beating against her rib cage makes it difficult to breathe. Is that why she’s so faint?
As a noblewoman of the Reach, she’s heard of the great House Boulanger-enemies to House Aymard, the great house the Sakamotos have sworn fealty to. Whose men attacked her and forced themselves on her with little regard, only for her to be saved by her supposed enemy. The Gods are strange and cruel.
Ser Jon, knighted only a moon ago, eyes bright and filled with hope, now lies in the dark dirt with her retinue with the other hardened knights. Jack, the coachman, only had a son waiting for him back at the castle as his wife passed giving birth to their son. No songs will be written for them. Would one grateful woman’s remembrance of them be enough?
The Boulanger Lord’s calm voice and demeanor helps soothe the cocktail of fear inside her. If circumstances were different, she could find herself lost in those lovely lilac eyes.
“Rei.” She croaks. “I am Lady Rei of House Sakamoto.” House Sakamoto of Heaven’s Well, sworn vassals of House Aymard: famous for their floral wines and sparkling wines. Their words: Fountain of Flourish. A sip of their wine is said to be akin to experiencing one of the seven heavens.
Despite his deliberately slow show of placing the dagger before her, she pulls back before returning to position. She stares at it, then back at him. Gingerly, her fingers wrap around the handle. Being unused to holding a blade, it feels strange.
She places her other hand in his and allows him to pull her up, but her legs shake, still not recovered from earlier. As if she’s never walked or stood before. It takes her a moment to stand firmly on the soft soil,
“If I may be so bold. Why do you help me, my Lord? My house is sworn to your enemy...” She speaks softly, her hand clutching onto her blade in case he turns cruel at her questioning.
jckoftrades:
Yuji felt his throat close as his lamentations of cobalt and dyne sunk in. It was a reaction borne from embarrassment; a heat rising along the back of his neck and shoulders which were thankfully hidden by his many layers of clothing.
Girls… girls don’t want to hear about corpse flowers or the exploitation of people’s labor for natural resources, either! Idiot! I’m becoming too much like Saiga.
Immediately, Yuji stood, perhaps a little too fast as his head spun, eager to change the subject and shed his otherwise introspective mood. But even that seemed nigh on impossible as the words ‘friend’, ‘papas’ and ‘daughters’ swirled inside his brain. And just briefly, Yuji allowed the images of his uncle and grandfather to fill the forefront of his mind; sepia-toned and frozen like an old photo whose edges had long since worn with touch and time.
“I should probably stay and wait for Saiga, but I think he can just call me if he’s so concerned. As for your flower shop… would that even be okay? Your dad wouldn’t get upset over you bringing a boy to your place of work?”
Would Cass’ father know instantly the stench of a Satellite boy who strayed too far from his hovel?
“Ha! Well, it’s not like I’m on a curfew or anything, so why not? I’d love to see your flowers!”
“Saiga? Is that your co-worker?” She asks. Cass remembers seeing a dark-haired person work close-by. Like Yuji, he’s another new face at the academy. While Cass didn’t go out of her way to remember the staff in particular, she does try to be mindful of the people who help the student body.
“Papa shouldn’t mind, you’re a friend!” Cass says cheerfully, having never brought a male friend over to their store or house.
Cass stands, albeit slower, smoothing out the wrinkles from her dress with the palms of her hands. She continues to smile at him, oblivious to the boy’s inner turmoil, and interprets Yuji’s sudden action as eagerness to see the beautiful blooms.
“This way, please!” Cass places a hand on his arm to gently lead him as they walk.
“Isn’t Neo Domino beautiful at this time of year, Minamoto-san?” Cass gestures with her free hand to the sight of clean streets decorated lightly with fallen leaves, and the blooming flowers in pots. Along the streets one can see into the windows of stores for new arrivals, or one can smell the contents and be lured by the temptations of nearby food shops.
“Have you ever eaten buns from the Tanaka Nikuman Shop?” Cass stops to point at the shop ahead of them. Its lights are dimmed and there are no signs of activity inside. The store has closed for the day. “They’re so busy every time. They sell out their buns too quickly!”
She cannot help but pout remembering the times she and her friends would wait in line only to be told that there were no more buns for sale. Ah, the disappointment! How she longs to one day sink her teeth into the soft dough!

Yuji scratched the back of his head and frowned. The reminder that cobalt, for the most part, was mined in a rather unethical way almost made him wish he hadn’t brought it up in the first place. It was much like the horror stories he had heard from those in Satellite who knew relatives or friends who went to mine Dyne in Crash Town.
Hardly any of them were heard from again.
Perhaps Yuji should have mentioned another precious gemstone, but even the beautiful stones decorating the throats and fingers of people from all over probably had devious origins as well.
He looked guilty for a moment, sheepisly staring down at the cleaned wrapping on his lap. “Oh, it can be dangerous, yeah. It’s dangerous in a lot of ways, but it’s a very precious resource. You have cobalt in that cute little phone of yours right now, actually!”
Yuji pointed with a thumb towards Cass’ phone. “A lot of people don’t appreciate the small things that make up a whole, you know? It’s amazing how one sliver of cobalt is what helps keep your phone or game system charged! Ah, sorry! I didn’t mean to go off on a tangent.”
Clearing his throat, Yuji glanced towards the sky, the clouds still lazily rolling along deep blues with nowhere in particular to go.
“Erm… you wouldn’t happen to know what time it is, would you?”
At Yuji’s comment, Cass examines her phone for the first time. She’s never opened it up nor was she ever truly curious of what makes up her phone. It was simply a little device for her to have fun with or to keep track of information.
Cass and the people around her buy products like their phones and use them absent-mindedly, not giving much thought as to how it works, nor do most of them care. A bunch of little things that make up one large whole, it’s similar to her precious Baking club: each member is precious and the club wouldn’t be the same without them in it. Each have their own strength and weakness, but everyone helps one another to work together.
At his question, her eyes wander to the digital clock and she lightly gasps.
“I can’t believe it’s so late already!” She turns her phone screen towards him with the clock at full display. “Time truly flies when you’re having fun with a friend, doesn’t it?”
“I should return to the flower shop or papa will start to worry. You know how protective papas can be with their daughters!” Cass giggles. “Would you like to come with me? I can give you your own personal tour of the shop by yours truly!”
jckoftrades:
Olivier perked a brow at the girl named Aya, studying her with the same discerning eye his father taught him. He kept a neutral smile during Cass’ introductions, the kind he defaulted to whenever he found himself at one of his family’s events or whenever an obligatory interview was needed.
Though he stood in a room with a handful of various faces, and across the way from where Rei stood, Olivier was ever conscious of her presence. It wasn’t as though she were boring holes into the back of his head with a glare; a look that could kill. It was merely a state of hyper-awareness, one where he found his glance tugging at the corner of his eye to find Rei again.
Ah, I only get this way when I find someone interesting.
“Oh, Cass,” Olivier said airily, breaking from his reverie. “You spoil me with your kind words! It is nice to meet you, Mademoiselle Aya. How much do you know about baking?”
Aya inhaled quickly, her face flushed from suddenly being recognized by Duel Academy’s latest celebrity transfer.
“Uh! Just basic stuff I picked up from mom in the kitchen, you know? I’m not like, on your level or anything.” Aya twirled a strand of hair on her finger all the while.
Olivier laughed lightly and shrugged one shoulder as if to say ‘Well, of course not!’. “I see. Well the girls here are very nice and will help you if you need it. Myself included. Go fetch an apron and be sure to read the club rules on the inside of the cabinet door.”
“And wash your haaaands.~ ♪ “ Both the tall and much shorter girl sang out from their place at the sink, their voices harmonizing as though they had done such a routine a thousand times before.
Aya gave a forced laugh and meandered to the cabinet, throwing the door open and pulling down one of the aprons inside. The girl hardly gave the rules a once over, a light blue poster board covered in stickers and colored inks. If anything she rolled her eyes at such a gaudy little project, tying the strings around her waist and sliding over to the sink near Rei where she muttered ‘So lame’ under her breath.
From the distance that Rei kept, one would think she wasn’t interested in Aya or her introduction, but she watched and observed: Aya’s reactions to Olivier gave the impression Aya wasn’t there to learn how to bake or make friends.
“So lame.”
Perhaps her quietness made the newcomer forget she was close-by, or that she’d hear her. Either way, the little comment confirmed her suspicions. The price of fame. Thankfully she’ll keep Olivier occupied and she can make crepes in peace.
Cass walks up to Aya with a little container of hair ties, bobby pins, and colorful scrunchies.
“Aya, we must tie our hair before starting. Would you allow me to braid your hair, please? You’ll look so pretty!” Cass offers kindly.
When the other girl gives her consent; Cass expertly, and gently uses her fingers to brush the blonde hair, separates them into 3, and expertly intertwine the soft tresses together to form a beautiful braid. As she worked, Cass uttered words of praise about Aya’s hair. ‘How pretty.’ ‘So soft!’
“Here you go, Aya. You’re ready.” Cass only gave herself a simple pony tail .
“Oh! Oh! Madam President!” Piped up a club member. “What is this week’s flower?”
Cass gasps.
“My apologizes! I must have forgotten!” Cass hurriedly goes to retrieve the large parcel. It’s larger than most of the other flowers she’s brought in. The club members gather around (except Rei), waiting in anticipation for this week’s reveal: it’s a blue hydrangea.
Rei is thankful she stayed back. When she’s out and about, she could quickly walk past hydrangea bushes and leave them in the dust. Now she’s forced to remember the garden she used to wander in and no longer (nor will she ever) have access to again. To Rei, the beautiful flowers seemed to apologize for her parents’ absences and coldness because they knew her parents never would.
“Oli! Did you know we have a story about hydrangeas?” Cass thanks the club member who provides her with a glass vase filled with fresh water and places the flower in.
“An emperor gave this flower as an apology to the girl he loved for neglecting her because he was working too much. If you work too much Oli, you know what to buy your spouse!”
The club members giggle at Cass’ harmless joke. Rei remains quiet.

Yuji felt his mouth open to tell Cass a few facts about the corpse flower, a plant native to Sumatra that reeked of rotting meat for about two days out of it’s dormancy. The talk of flowers and scent of dirt reminded him of the odd facts Saiga could rattle off about the world he had once learned in a book or through some obscure online video that took up his friend’s fascination.
Girls don’t want to hear about flowers that smell like rotting meat!
“I don’t think I would mind the smell of dirt,” he said thoughtfully, picking up the remainder of lemony crumbs from the wrapping and popping them into his mouth. “Lemons! Wow, you don’t let anything go to waste, huh?”
It sounded much like the mindset of most people in Satellite who let nothing go to waste either.
He blinked once Cass turned to him again. “Oh… me?”
What was there to say that wouldn’t blow his cover? Yuji quickly flipped through the files in his brain to find the most desirable answers; ideally ones that would give the impression he was a normal teenaged boy living in Neo Domino.
“Ah, well, when I’m not working I’m probably practicing Duel Monsters or playing video games. I do like building things! Both Saiga and I are really good at drawing up blueprints or taking things apart just to put them back together. As for my favorite color… hum. I like cobalt blue. Have you ever seen raw cobalt before?”
Cass listens with rapt attention, gently nodding as he lists his hobbies. Duel Monsters, video games and building things: those are hobbies that most Neo Domino boys his age like to partake in. Many go to Duel Academia in the hopes of becoming the next King or legend, all wide-eyed with big dreams. Then there are those who are gifted with technology and their dream is to work for Kaiba Corp to give the world grander duels. Cass’ dream is simpler: to make the world a little softer and prettier with her future flower shop café.
“Cobalt blue?” How precise! “I’m not familiar with that color. I’ll just google it!”
She pulls out her phone, its case is decorated with fake whipped cream and other non-edible desserts; made in one of the many get-togethers of the Cute Club. Hanging off the case is a white fluffy ball with a pair of thin flaps on top representing bunny ears. Adorable!
“Wow, what a pretty blue!” Cass coos over the rich blue color. All of God’s creations are amazing! “No, um, I’ve never seen raw cobalt before. How would I find it?”
Her amazement is short-lived.
“Minamoto-san do you find cobalt when taking things apart? Maybe you and your friend should be careful: it looks like a dangerous thing!”

Yuji collected himself, shaking his head and smiling a little as he listened with great care the way Cass beamed over the flowers.
The idea of pink moss tickled him. Yuji had only seen such fantastical pieces of land covered with the stuff in photos or secondhand recollections of students during their family trips. The boy had never been outside of Satellite or Neo Domino, and even though such sights were easily within grasp, the fear of getting caught still pricked the back of his mind.
Can’t think about that now…
“Oh, you think daffodils look like beaks?” He straightened up in an attempt to wipe clean the thought of being sent back to a world without such smiles or flowers. “I always thought they looked like trumpets, you know? Like you could blow into the stem and they would make a little ‘doot doot’ sound.”
For emphasis, Yuji brought a semi-closed fist up to his puckered lips and made said ‘doot doot’ sound as though he were playing a trumpet in the air. He paused halfway once Cass passed him her family’s business card. Gingerly, Yuji took it between his fingers; a sacred thing, now.
If there is a god out there… please don’t make me suddenly allergic to flowers!
“It must always smell nice in your shop. Probably smells a lot better than where Saiga and I work at the Academy!”
The image of a musical daffodil delights Cass, and even more so Yuji’s little performance. The world would be lovelier if flowers can sing or play music. Cass can already imagine the music of flowers turning people’s frowns into relaxed smiles after a long day. Who can hate flowers? How can someone not smile at their charm and beauty?
“Ah...about that. Most flowers don’t smell so strongly, you know? I actually smell the dirt more.” Or perhaps she’s become used to their smell after working with them for years. How time flies! She’s found herself reflecting so much nowadays as graduation approaches. “Fruits have stronger smells when they ripen. Especially lemons! We keep some lemon trees to make lemonade for our customers to sample. Or I make things like lemon bread! I try to use everything, like candying the peel to make a pretty presentation on top! ” Lemonade; perfect on hot days and absolutely refreshing. Some customers specifically visit on hot days on the chance that Cass makes lemonade. Hot chocolate is made in colder seasons and it’s just as popular as the summer drink, perhaps even more if Cass made homemade marshmallows with cute little shapes.
“I just realized I barely asked anything about you, Minamoto-san. I’m so sorry, I got caught up in my little, um, speeches.” She turns to him to show she’s given him her full attention. “Please tell me about yourself. Um, like, what do you like to do when you’re not working? Oh! And your favorite color!”
