Recursive mono and bi-stratified retinal ganglion cell. There are two types of recursive cells, the recursive monostratified cell (stratifying in the ON sublamina) and the recursive bistratified cell with dendrites in both the OFF and the ON sublamina of the inner plexiform layer (IPL). They have moderately densely branched dendritic trees in which many secondary branches tend to curve back towards the soma and they play a role in the direction selectivity in primates similar to the directionally selective, motion-sensitive RGCs (dsRGCs) of the rabbit. Mono and bi-stratified RGCs connect to different types of starburst amacrine cells (SAC)and bipolar cells. The bistratified cells connect to the on-off SACs while the monostratified cells connect to the on-SACs. On (left) and Off (right)-Smooth monostratified retinal ganglion cell. smooth monostratified cells share many properties with the parasol cells but however they are distinguished by their small cell body, large dendritic tree and receptive field diameters. There are two types: the ON smooth monostratified cells and the OFF smooth monostratified cells that synaps with the ON and OFF diffuse cone bipolar cells in the inner and outer inner plexiform layer respectively. They also connect with Amacrine cell but in different ratio/types compared to parasol cells. As parasol cells, they project their fibers to the LGN and superior colliculus. They synaps with blue cone bipolar cells in the inner layer of the inner plexiform layer of the retina while in the outer layer they synaps with the diffuse (red/green off) bipolar cells.
