Many were Zoroastrian, Mesopotamian/Assyro-Babylonian, Arabian, Canaanite, among others. Quite a few made a direct transition from their ancient roots into islam and never were Christian at all.
Islam and Christianity are both fairly new, islam being the youngest of the two.
Many things Islam is based upon also existed before it was ever created, people just copied directly from other religions (mostly just a parallel to Christianity, if major details were inverted.) hacked together something new, gave it their own spin and pushed it forward.
It’s basically the low effort/terrible plagiarising “hater” fanfic of religions that completely bastardized cannon and made a few spinoff books glorifying the author, who happened to be an illiterate mentally ill pedophile (married a 6yo consummated at 9 which is the basis of child marriages being legal under sharia. ) that had others write a second book of his supposed messages from angel Gabriel that completely contradicted the first set (which they pretend the second set doesn’t exist as to not discredit him.) which the first set, were a copy of the bible that had been rewritten to appeal to “evil” and political gains, glorifying lying, murdering, treachery, genocide, destruction, sacrificing children by fire to be rewarded 🧨💥, conquering by violence or subterfuge, etc.
Theres also evidence the Vatican played a role in the actual creation of islam too.
In all fairness though the church also used Christianity as a major political tool and reshaped it in many ways to fit political ends.
One great example, Reincarnation was officially removed from Christian doctrine during the Fifth Ecumenical Council in the year 553 (also known as the Second Council of Constantinople). The council was evoked by the Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora to decide then what were to be ‘acceptable’ Christian beliefs and practices. The council, as instructed by the Emperor, produced fourteen new anathemas and the very first one condemned reincarnation and the concept that souls pre-existed with God.
The FIRST of these decrees read:
“If anyone asserts the pre-existence of souls, and shall assert the restoration which follows from it: let him be anathema.”
This literally meant that anyone believing in reincarnation was damned, and those who advocated reincarnation could be excommunicated from the Church or worse.
Pope Vigilius refused to sign a papal decree condemning teachings on reincarnation. As while it was worded in different ways it had been an aspect of Christianity for a very very long time. (It appears in nearly every single religion/belief system except the modern abrahamic.) the Pope escaped to avoid being forced to condemn teachings and never signed the order, so technically it was never legal.
But the eastern Roman Empire loved the message of hell and damnation obey or burn forever to keep people in line, so that is how the religion moved forward.
Modern abrahamic religions really are a political cancer upon the earth which are actually based upon Saturnalian worship, i.e. actual satanic beliefs, but thats another story.
