Happy Father’s Day everyone. We want to share this amazing story of James and Jonah Geier (as told by James’ daughter Laura Geier). Celebrating Dads like James is what Father’s Day is all about. "Perseverance. Shared by both the Arch in withstanding time and change, and the resolve of a father to hike his disabled son to the Arch to experience the incredible symbol of natural beauty and strength. Retired Law Enforcement Officer James Geier hiked his eighteen year old son Jonah Geier three miles, and 480 feet over slickrock trails, and up red rock steps to share with Jonah a worldwide symbol of strength and endurance. Neither Geier nor Arch is deterred by challenges."

At first glance, this looks like a scary place for a hike. But look again. Photographer Darrell Staggs took this photo in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area near the Arizona/Utah Border. Here’s what he had to say about it. “This canyon housed a pool of water that was sheltered from any wind, making it a perfect mirror for the canyon walls lit by the late afternoon sun. The sun was rapidly descending towards the horizon, and lighting was changing every minute. At this time of day, you can sit in a single spot and take an ever-changing set of images of the same subject. Not all spectacular shots are obvious.”

Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge is located on the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula in Hyde County, North Carolina. Established in 1934, the 50,180-acre Refuge consists of open water, marsh, forest and croplands. The centerpiece of the Refuge is the shallow Lake Mattamuskeet. At 40,100 acres, it is North Carolina’s largest natural lake.

The Refuge’s strategic location along the Atlantic Flyway makes it a vitally important stopover for wintering waterfowl. Over the past 35 years, up to 80 percent of the Northern Pintail and up to 30 percent of Green-wing Teal that annually migrate along the Flyway utilize Mattamuskeet. In total, the Refuge attracts more than 200,000 ducks, geese and swans from November through February. Photo: Allie Stewart, USFWS

We’re up to 170 million blogs. Whatever, nbd. But the bigger we get, the more government requests for account data we receive. And since there may be a day when it’s your information they want, it’s important you know what they’re asking for.

Starting today, we’ll be publishing a biannual Transparency Report detailing the number of requests we get from different sources, why we receive those requests, and how we respond to them.

If the report is TL;DR, here’s the upshot: Tumblr received a total of 462 requests for user data in 2013, and responded with account data (e.g., email and IP address) 76% of the time. A small subset of those responses also included content of blog posts (e.g., text, audio, images, or video).

The remaining requests (24%) were illegal, vague, or inaccurate—so we refused to provide any data at all.

Striking the right balance between privacy and legal responsibilities is no small task, but we hope this report demonstrates our ongoing commitment to this community.

Platinum Emerald and Diamond Ring

Platinum cocktail ring set with round, brilliant cut diamonds and three round faceted emeralds.

A very enjoyable commission from a nice client, the ring is constructed from sheet and square wire using only 1650F platinum solder.

Plenty of thought goes into such a ring. You cannot afford to trip yourself up and find at some point you need to go backward to complete a part of the project. Then you risk having to start again, not a good thing!

Sometimes when I bring up my parents profession, people tell me that they or their friends make jewellery as well. Then I’m almost always shown plastic beads strung together or maybe a couple of simple copper ingots attached to some varnished twigs. This? This is jewellery. And it’s not so much about materials, after a point, it’s about craftsmanship and actually earning a title. I can bang some 2x4s and sheet metal into a large enough box to fit a person, then call it a house, but I wouldn’t tell Frank Llyod Wright’s kid that “Oh yeah, I’m an architect too.”
