Art Nouveau

This is an Art Nouveau inspired building in Riga, Latvia. Art Nouveau is a style of art, architecture, and applied art that was popular between 1890 and 1910

Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russian “official” designs

This is a Nazi Germany and Communist Russian propaganda poster from the Second World War. These posters were designed to gain support from the citizens so the country’s could gain more support for the war. The posters would depict the leader of the regime “guiding” their respective country to victory

1950’s/60’s counterculture

What comes to mind for this era of design is the colorful concert posters that would line the streets advertising up coming concerts. The best example would be a Grateful Dead poster. The artist would use colorful and psychedelic colors to really make the poster “pop” and be eye catching. This was also a time when many of the mind altering psychedelics were becoming popular which would make the posters come alive

This is my back office. At one time, this was a 3 season room that was screened off and only used during the warmer months. Being that my house is a 1 floor ranch, we decided to turn this area into a year round usable space. A wood stove was installed and this is where we decided to place our home office. The room doesn’t follow a particular design style but it kind of resembles an old farmhouse.

RN Portfolio 5-6

RENAISSANCE

This is the Statue of David that was sculpted by Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, or Michelangelo as we refer to this famous artist. The marble sculpture was created from a single block of marble between 1501 and 1504. Michelangelo was a prominent figure in Florence Italy and was only 26 when he created this treasure. David was originally placed in the Palazzo della Signoria where it stood from 1504 till 1834 when it was moved to the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence Italy where it stands today.

NEO CLASSICIST

This is a painting by John Trumbull (1756-1843), named the Declaration of Independence. This was painted in Paris a decade after the Declaration of Independence was signed. John Trumbull graduated from Harvard University and later The Royal Academy in London. It is often assumed that this painting depicts the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but it actually depicts the events of June 28th, 1776. This is when John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin presented their draft of the Declaration of Independence to John Hancock and Congress. The original painting can be found in the United States Capital Rotunda in Washington D.C. where it was placed in 1826.

RN Portfolio #4: Scamper

The change idea that I came up with has to do with the nurses desk on the floor that I work. The desk has 6 computer stations which allows for 6 nurse to chart. The issue with this design is that there is only one way in or out of the nursing station and can tend to become crowded with 6 nurses behind there and if there was a rapid response called, the nurses get log jammed trying to exit the station. I would change the layout of the design to allow for 2 separate entrances/exits to eliminate this issue. According to SCAMPER, the “R” would be followed, reverse or rearrange. The new design would allow for a book shelf that is attached to the wall and above the computer stations to allow more room on the desks. As Naccarella stated, “changing the physical element changes the experience of the object”.

RN Portfolio 3: Elements

The object I chose for this weeks project is my wood stove. This a Jotul 400 Castine that is made in Norway. What drew me to this model was the traditional design of the stove. It is made to look like an antique stove but it has all the modern amenities of the new stoves of today. To really appreciate this stove, you need to first pull into my driveway to be greeted by the smell of burning hardwoods and then walk in from the cold to be greeted by the warm, cozy air that the stove puts out.

The designers chose to paint these stoves with flat black stove paint. The choice of flat black is that is resists high heat fading and it is easy for the homeowner to touch up the paint as needed with a simple can of high heat spray paint.

As for shape, the stove was designed to look as antique as possible but to be a modern functioning wood stove. This model is equipped with a catalytic system that “reburns” the smoke that was a generated from the burning wood. There is a system of honeycombs at the top of the stove where the smoke enters and is allowed to re enter the stove to be burned off almost all together. This design makes the stove nearly smokeless except upon the initial fire up.

The object that I chose is the portable telemetry box that we use at the hospital. They have been around since telemetry floors have been in hospitals. The ones that we use now are cordless and rely on WiFi to operate.

The design of the current tele boxes are that they are small and lightweight. Another good design is that they are wireless and this lets the patient to be able to leave their bed if needed. The biggest plus to these boxes is that they let the RN see the patients heart rate and rhythm at a local station near the nurses desk.

Some of the downfalls of this design is that it can be cumbersome due to having to be put in a hospital gowns pocket which never seem to fit the box correctly. There are long wires that easily become a trip hazard for the patient and they rely on 9 volt batteries which always seem to die at the wrong time.

If I was to market any changes to the design of the box to a group of individuals, I would put them in hospital gowns and then place the tele box in the pocket showing off the better fit and design of the box. I also think that there should be shorter wires so they aren’t always a trip hazard.

The design problem that I would fix is found at the hospital where I currently work. Every room has computers that are mounted on the wall, which is convenient but the issue is that the RN has to have their back towards the patient when asking questions and charting. I included a diagram of what our typical single room looks like.

To begin this change, I would go back to #4 in the design process. This is where exploration would come into play. The idea of using something other than the wall system needs to be researched and all feedback from all involved needs to be taken into consideration to help make the change.

The ADAPT from scamper would be used in this change as well. This is because adapting involves change, as opposed to putting to other uses where the unchanged idea is directed to another purpose (Aspelund, 2015). The idea of using handheld tablets when in a patients room would help RNs to keep eye contact and be more receptive to the patients that we treat.

On the hierarchy of design this idea would fall under USABILITY. This new change from wall units to tablets must be an easy transition for all who use the wall systems on a daily basis.

Jacobus Turck is credited with the first fire helmet design in New York in the 1730’s. There are many helmet designs available but this is what we call a “traditional” helmet or an “east coast helmet”. I think we tend to stick with this design because the east coast has some of the oldest fire departments in the country. This design is an example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality.
