Cobwebs | Theron & Mathis
mathis-savoieâ:
It was a gamble - and possibly a really stupid one - to drop the âLâ word. The witch was acting on little better than a rumor because it was wretchedly difficult for a Savoie to come by good information honestly. Yet so many of items in this shop resonated with some kind of magic, there was no way Theron had managed to curate such an exquisite collection of truly otherworldly stuff by coincidence. Mathis couldâve spent days, if not weeks, puzzling out the origins and purposes of each piece⌠had he not previously committed to a full-time job at the distillery.Â
There was also the very real question of just how long Theron would tolerate him loitering, as the witch was notorious for wearing out his welcome. Still, heâd managed to bring an item that was worth the manâs time. He only needed to convince him of its authenticity, and as luck would have it, there was little more he needed to say than the truth. His eyes brightened with excitement as Theron easily grasped his meaning, initially agreeing, âYes-â It was then that he remembered to whom - or rather, to what - he was speaking. Mr. Athanasios was clearly no stranger to the supernatural world, but he was also evidently human. Mathis reined it in.
âI mean. Thatâs what Iâve heard, tooâŚâ It was a pathetic hedge, but the last thing he needed to do was accidentally lead the collector to believe he of all people knew where the wolves were hiding. He didnât. The Savoies never had a more than a cool working relationship with the Pontchartrain Pack, and even that had gone up in flames around same time that the southern bayou did. Mathis gave a tentatively optimistic smile. âReally?â Both the news that his trade was accepted and the information that heâd be welcome back with any other such items was enough to make him forget his past, fleeting reservations.
He quickly replied, âIâm certain, yes. Please. Whatever you need to doâŚâ Where a bill of trade was concerned, that is. He didnât know what the process entailed, exactly, but he was more than ready to move forward with the transaction. After all, he could have another such amulet tomorrow, if he only dedicated a bit of time to his craft tonight. A bansheeâs ring was far harder to come by. Even if its applications were a bit more limited, to him it was perfect. It was exactly what heâd been looking for, and heâd found it just in time.
Theron chuffed a low laugh at the young manâs rather feeble attempt to cover up his slip of the tongue. It was a low, leonine sound but it was rather fitting for the man as he prowled over to the counter with a fluid, cat-like gait. From one of his many drawers he pulled out a small mahogany box engraved with a small circle of Fulthark Runes and carefully deposited the talisman into its velvet-lined interior. Once his newest acquisition was secure he pulled out a wad of receipt paper, drawing up a quick bill of sale that he handed to the witch with a sly, feline smile.
âHa, yes Iâm sure you hear lots of things,â he chuckled, amber eyes flashing mischievously.  âI understand if youâd like to keep things...vague. I donât need to know any personal details about you beyond your name if thatâs what your worried about. The only details I need are regarding any items of interest you bring me. Iâm not so fool-hardy as to blindly accept curios...especially from someone with such an...interesting bloodline.â
The Savoie name was dreadfully well know in New Orleans, particularly in the circles that he tended to find himself in. While he wasnât a Hunter anymore, Theron knew that value of keeping himself well-informed and with the amount of tactless amateurs that had been flooding the city as of late it was all too easy to pull information regarding targets of interest. Being in the know, meant keeping himself alive.
âNot that Iâm judging mind you, as Iâm sure youâve guessed Iâm not exactly sterling either,â Theron said, waving his hand errantly as if the details of their terribly sordid lives were only a minor inconvenience.  âThere, that should be everything you need. Do you have any other questions for me?â
