PBR699-O 01 Week4-Mastery Journal Assignment

I am honestly getting emotional as I type this. This month’s course, “PUBLIC RELATIONS: FINAL PROJECT AND THESIS” has been the icing on the cake to my academic experience this year. It was difficult for me to imagine this stage in the process when I first began in August 2019. Obtaining my masters was simply a thought but is now a reality and I could not be more grateful. My instructor, Diane Dobry has been beyond helpful towards my writing improvement. I have never been a great writer in my opinion. I consider myself a great public speaker that is for sure but putting my thoughts on paper was never something I had to do. I guess my gift of gab enabled me. Various teaching professionals who attempt to assist me did not possess the gift of gab that Ms. Dobry did. She provided me with solid feedback that I have never had given to me. I appreciated it more than she can ever know. The personalized videos critiquing the weekly assignments were essentials to me to not only improve my paper but my purpose overall. The four models of public relations and the media/theory communications were my favorite lesson because it has applied to my recent job search. Also, the revisal of my resume was necessary and I was able to make a cover letter. To be honest I had never had a cover letter. Within the field of public relations where people “buy” people, it was important to sell the reason why an employer should take the time to review my resume. I am grateful to not only this course but the overall course program within my journey as an online graduate student at Full Sail University. I look forward to my commencement ceremony and post-graduation. I have no worries that I am prepared for whatever the future holds for me both professionally and personally.

PBR640-O 01 Week4-Mastery Journal Assignment

This course was one I looked forward to within my masters of arts program for public relations at Full Sail University. As a media consumer, I have always enjoyed online media rooms and was curious about how a company creates one for their brand. The best OMR caters to both industry personnel, such as journalists and also common consumers. My instructor, Ms. Lee did a great job providing her students with the necessary tools to effectively build our own media pages to properly educate, entertain, and engage our target demographics. Diving deep in comparing and comparing various big brands, such as Toyota and Google’s online media rooms were helpful because it provided insight in not only the overall content but the voice, tone, and style of the content. By doing so I was able to curate my creativity for my capstone client’s website. I applied what I learned in content marketing as well. It was a concept I have consistently indulged in by being an Instagram Influencer with more than 100K followers. However, learned the “method to the madness” was key for me both personally and professionally. Knowing what message to disseminate, when and where has helped me and my capstone client to communicate more efficiently with our audiences. Also, the content strategy section of this course was important because often individuals and/or brands tend to set objectives and goals but lack the strategies and tactics to become successful. I loved viewing my classmate’s snapshot presentations because it was a visual representation of all the previous steps we have taken in prior classes. I appreciate how Ms. Lee encourages us to encourage each other. The field of study allows us to create our media list within one another and for that I am genuinely grateful for. My course goals were to contact Gary Vee and surprisingly I was contacted by his media camp to help promote a new sneaker he is partnering with. This course has made me better for that campaign because I know what to provide him with for his online media room!

PBR650-O 01 Week4- Mastery Journal Assignment

This course has been enjoyable due to the reading materials and weekly powerpoint that outlined each week’s topics. Learning how a brand being popular does not necessarily equate to them being reputable was very interesting. I personally enjoyed week 1 because I was able to take a deeper look into companies I have known, loved, and even worked for by differentiating their internal corporate reputation and their external reputation with the public. Week two was pretty engaging by learning more about how to manage a company’s online reputation through social media by organizing a content strategy. For example, I was able to create my own social media assessment chart for my capstone client, ForeverGirlHair that would serve as the tool to when/how/and with whom to responds to both positive and negative blog posts. Creating a crisis communications plan for Week 3 was most challenging for me however, my instructor was very helpful with correcting me. Week 4 is always my favorite week of any course because it allows me to tie everything together and self reflect on how what I have recently learned will aid in my success within my PR field upon graduation. I live by the quote by is: “FAIL TO PLAN, PLAN TO FAIL. This month’s course has shown me how to properly prepare for the not so good days that the company I represent may have to ensure that it is not so bad for the brand overall. My initial goals for this course at the beginning of the program was to clean up my personal social media and network with other PR professionals. Creating my contact media list have allowed me to do that because I not only connect with new people within the industry but I also am kept on my toes by having a new audience.

PBR620-O 01 Week4- Mastery Journal Assignment

This course has been one of the most enjoyable classes of my public relations master of arts program. Event marketing and production have always been a personal skill of mines that I have recently been able to put to professional use. I have always been interested in creating events however this month’s lessons have shown me the why behind the what! After analyzing the importance of using digital media to advertise an event has helped me create my own strategy for my post graduation clients. The website, smore.com became a vital tool for me because it does a great job of not only promoting the event but getting the information in front of the right people. Also, the concept of crowdfunding was another aspect that I was always knowledgeable of but never knew the details behind how it is successfully done. The assignment’s helped me reveal my creative side by creating content that may not have been an actual event but gave me the practice to get it perfect for the real deal. I have had prior experience creating event programs and even being an emcee, however, I never knew the behind the scene program that is required to make sure every individual who is actually working the event knows what to have done and what particular time. This helps the event flow better overall. Lastly, I found the webinar assignment very intriguing because I have recently become addicted to webinars that are advertised on social media for various topics and have always wondered how it was done. I naively thought it took “a lot” however, know I know the secret which is that it just takes organization and dedication. I enjoyed not only creating my own webinar which covered the hair extensions industry but viewing my fellow classmate’s webinars as well.

PBR610-O 01 Week4- Mastery Journal Assignment

This course has been my most enjoyable class thus far honestly. Ms. Lee has been an exceptional instructor by providing the class with specific examples of what it looks like to excel in her course. I can appreciate that because too often many students are not sure what exactly is desired from him/her within a particular course. I enjoyed reviewing previous lessons such as how to write a press release to newer materials such as creating my own video news release! I believe everything I have learned in this course will be applicable to my career after completing the entire public relations program because everything was more practical than theoretical. Once employees as a PR agent for a particular company and/or person, it will be essential to know who to contact and how to contact them to assist with the client’s brand. When hosting press conferences, I will be better prepared with initial statements as well as responses for hard-hitting questions that journalist may ask me. Also, having a media strategy is the bread and butter of my profession. I believe the idea of networking is great to do within any career choice however it is vital for mines. Having great reliable contacts will make me more desirable to my clients because I come with a long list of people who are willing to work with whomever I work with. And while building my contact list I am aware of what to do and say when pitching. I had prior knowledge of how to present an “elevator pitch” however having it tailored to the public relations field is extremely helpful and I look forward to applying all that I have learned post-graduation!

PBR560-O 01 Week4- Mastery Journal Assignment

This course has been my most challenging course yet! I have learned more about myself as a student than ever before in all of my scholastic years. Honestly, I have never been the best researcher due to also relying on the fact that most of the papers I have been assigned to write have been opinion based. Also, my undergraduate university/program drilled MLA into me, therefore, adjusting to APA was a bit of a challenge also. However, I learned more about the guidelines of plagiarism which was a big part of this month’s learning process. I would hate to have failed my current and/or a future client because I did not take the necessary steps to ensure all of my content was original and my research was cited correctly. Being a public relations professional will require me to provide my clients with background information regarding their brand and their target market for a successful campaign. I have to be able to provide reliable and current sources of facts. I did enjoy the lesson materials. I specifically loved learning how to properly interpret and analyze a case study. I enjoyed conducting my own case study at my high school alma mater for my capstone project. Being about to create and report your own research is an honorable feeling. I also enjoyed making my client’s promotional video. I haven’t used my Sony camera as much since beginning my program and doing so was very enjoyable. I am still learning to edit more efficiently. I appreciate having the luxury of my technology package. It allows me the opportunity to learn how to create original content on my own. In the future even if I do not continue shooting and editing videos myself I will have the key fundamental tools to better assist those who are doing those task for me to align my vision with the actual visual.

PBR550-O 01 Week4- Mastery Journal Assignment

This course has been challenging but enjoyable. I love social media and already had preexisting knowledge of its use however I never had thorough information regarding the influence within its use. In lack of better terms, there was no “method to my madness”. Within public relations, a professional must know the metrics of various social media platforms and its meanings to help market and manage a company correctly.

Having taken a few business courses within my undergraduate studies I knew what ROI was but it was interesting to see how it connects with the internet within my graduate studies. Typically one would not be able to see and gage the value in online relationships and measuring and/or interpreting the data from analytics given from online activity between the public and a company.

Keyword search was my favorite topic to study during this course. Prior to this class, I would search hashtags on different social media platforms to find EXACTLY what I was looking for and I never saw it as a keyword search but that was exactly what it was. For example, Instagram is my go to when I am searching for a specific topic because I am more of a visual learner therefore, I prefer to see a picture than to read a paragraph. Also, evaluating a website for SEO was intriguing as well as learning key performance indicators, KPI’s.

I was able to complete a goal from my PRD timeline powerpoint which was to learn more about my own website and how it can be improved. Learning how to comprehend my google analytics was PRICELESS. I am grateful for how this course expanding what I “thought” I knew so much about regarding social media and how it can truly help an individual and/or company.

PBR540-O 01 Week4- Mastery Journal Assignment

This course has been my most challenging course thus far. I am beyond grateful for the experience because I believe it has strengthened my writing and research skills. I had to pay more attention to detail which is vital within the public relations profession.

My original objective for this course was to find out what platform is the most influential. And I learned that it is subjective to the content that I would be creating. I was already proficient with Facebook and instagram. I loved that I made a Pinterest which I hear so many great things about from users from other platforms . I wanted to also learn how to compute web traffic and its influence regarding the promotion of my content. I fell in love with the Hootsuite platform. It took a lot of pressure off me to “remember” to post and/or promote.

I enjoyed doing an assignment on Gary Vee. I want to be interviewed on his podcast one day! With the help of this program sharpening my media skills I believe its possible. Unfortunately, I did not get around to contacting my other favorite social media star, Eric Thomas! He is motivational speaker who received his rise to fame from viral speeches that exude passion and persistence. Once I measure my new website design’s traffic I will contact him with the best content I have to offer thanks to this course.

Lastly and most importantly, the constant designing of my website was difficult at times due to time management with my full time job but I pushed myself to get it done because it needed to be. I have had my domain prior to being enrolled at Full Sail University. However, I was always lost about where to start with adding content and this course help guide me through that process.

NMJ642-O 01 Week4- Mastery Journal Assignment

My favorite assignment was definitely the powerpoint presentation on the two cases regarding defamation. I have always been aware of the New York Times Co. v. Sullivan case which is why I used it as my weekly discussion but the Gertz v. Welch case I enjoyed researching being a Chicago native. I “thought” I was fluent within powerpoint presentations however I actually found myself challenged a bit more than expected. Not by the content of the assignment but more so by its creation. I had never use the foot notes feature nor was I aware of the possibility of doing a voice over. I feel as though that is a technique for written and oral presentations I will use more in other classes to come and even in my career. And while not a particular assignment, I thoroughly enjoyed every week’s discussion post topic because it seemed to make engagement amongst my fellow classmate a lot easier and even more entertaining to be completely honest.

The topic of copyright was most helpful both professionally and personally. I knew to always “cite the source” but never why. To learn the fundamental behind it and apply it to new millennial things such as online social platforms gave me a new outlook on why it is essential. Ignorantly I never considered visual and audio content to be just as respected as written content but now I genuinely understand it. I will use the acquired knowledge regarding potential legal issues in the communications field in great magnitude. To know is to grow and I truly feel that now with the legal foundation behind what I do and why I must do it a certain way or not provides me with more substance and character for my upcoming projects. No one wants to be sued, I know I don’t want to nor do I want to have to sue someone else not for intentional malice but for simply not knowing. I honestly feel obligated to share this information with others online via youtube and facebook!

NMJ520-O 02 Week4- Mastery Journal Assignment

One of my goals within this course was to be able to increase my writing ability and I would say it was accomplished. Thanks to the assistance of my instructor, Meredith Cochie, I was able to approve my writing style. I appreciated her thorough feedback because much too frequently many teachers just provide a grade but not a break down of the grade given and things that could have been done and/or said that would have increased the grade.

I also learned a lot regarding the in depth layout of creating and publishing a story. Prior to this course I thought most writers just sit down and write but I have discovered there is a method to the madness. Within writing a story there must be structure, timing, and tone that not only captivates the reader but increases their knowledge regarding the topic discussed.

I also wanted to write more on my social media pages and that I did do. Practice makes perfect. And while no one’s writing is “perfect” because it is all subjective I do see how a reader becomes loyal to a particular writer. It is the quantity and quality of the writing. Creating and distributing one great story every now and again is not the equivalent to a good story every other day/week! Consistency is key. And by having an outline to follow.

In addition, I learned a lot more from my fellow classmates in this course. I did not feel as though I was being forced to interact with others. However, having the freedom to craft stories of our professional and personal choice allowed me to find out more about others online. The topics some of my classmates choice were beyond engaging and entertaining and Im grateful for the opportunity to relate to them more.

I plan to apply everything I learned from my instructor, my classmates and even myself. I learned more about me by being able to write about me. Not other’s from the past and/or present but simply me. I learned that it is vital to have multiple ideas and sources to pull from to widen the story being created. I also will use social media more!

PBR510-O 01 Week4- Mastery Journal Assignment

I thoroughly enjoyed this course for a couple reasons. First, the content required and suggested to study was very engaging and helpful but I really enjoyed the fact that it allowed me to understand what I had been doing on my own before enrolling in the PR masters program. I have always had a strong online presence through social media however, I was able to connect what I was initially doing involuntarily with actual strategies given throughout this course especially regarding social media! My favorite assignment was the PSA assignment. I love visual marketing and really love the kind that has a purpose with it and not just a paycheck. The PSA assignment allowed me to support a cause that is near and dear to me which is gun violence in my hometown. It also taught me the fundamentals of making it influential and not just visually stimulating.

I believe Dr. Robert Cialdini six principles of persuasion will be the most helpful topic covered this month to me as a public relations professional. It gave me the foundation to know what I am pitching, why, and how to pitch is perfectly to the correct person. Which is vital within public relations because I want to disseminate messages to the right crowd to create the best successful outcome conclusion for my clients.

The knowledge I acquired in this month’s course will prepare me to work efficiently in the public relations because the industry is forever changing with the internet. And while the information may not change the ways in which it is shared is and by learning how to work within the digital world will keep me in business. And, I believe having a preexisting technological advantage prior to the course will allow me to potentially innovate new methods within the industry.
