If your first reaction when someone commits a violent crime is to point out that they were in the country illegally, that’s not about “safety” — that’s a self-report on your bigotry. You’re taking one individual’s actions and using them as an excuse to villainize an entire group of people you already don’t think should be here.
People crash cars every day — we don’t call for banning all citizens from driving. People with guns shoot people — we don’t treat every gun owner like a murderer. Is this some kind of real-life Minority Report where the existence of one bad actor justifies suspicion of millions?
The truth is, there are countless ways we could prevent harm in society, if the actual goal was safety. But the outrage only seems to get loud when it can be weaponized against people they already hate. Meanwhile, when the danger comes from things they like or people they identify with, suddenly it’s “individual responsibility.”
That double standard says everything.
