rainbowrosefae submitted to medievalpoc:
I saw your post about Xiang Fei and, as a woman and a Chinese person, found it interesting. I did a little digging, and found a higher resolution version:

The Codex Zouche-Nuttall, pre-Columbian piece of Mixtec writing, currently located at the British Museum, London. Late Postclassic period, from Mexico.
It is one of three codices that record the genealogies, alliances and conquests of several 11th- and 12th-century rulers of a small Mixtec city-state in highland Oaxaca, the Tilantongo kingdom, especially under the leadership of the warrior Lord Eight Deer Jaguar Claw (who died early twelfth century at the age of fifty-two).
Artifact statement from the the British Museum:
This is one of a small number of known Mexican codices (screenfold manuscript books) dating to pre-Hispanic times. It is made of deer skin and comprises 47 leaves. The Codex contains two narratives: one side of the document relates the history of important centres in the Mixtec region, while the other, starting at the opposite end, records the genealogy, marriages and political and military feats of the Mixtec ruler, Eight Deer Jaguar-Claw. This ruler is depicted at top centre, next to his calendric name (8 circles and a deer’s head).
Very few Mesoamerican pictorial documents have survived destruction and it is not clear how the Codex Zouche-Nuttall reached Europe. In 1859 it turned up in a Dominican monastery in Florence. Years later, Sir Robert Curzon, 14th Baron Zouche (1810-73), loaned it to The British Museum. His books and manuscripts were inherited by his sister, who donated the Codex to the Museum in 1917. The Codex was first published by Zelia Nuttall in 1902.

Here’s the page on the British Museum site for this work.
Both sources omit that the reason so few Indigenous works of art from this region survive, including Illuminated Manuscripts like this one, is that Indigenous books, building, entire libraries, and religious items were purposely burned by the Spanish to destroy as much of their culture as possible:
The Spanish attempted to wipe out as much Aztec culture as they could. Aztec religion, arts, and sciences were destroyed. Almost all of their codices, sculpture, and other records were burned or smashed. Most of Tenochtitlan was razed. The first building the conquistadors destroyed was the Aztec Templo Mayor. Using its stones, the conquered Aztec were forced to build a Roman Catholic cathedral on the site of the temple. The conquistadors forced Aztec slave labour to build a new Spanish city on the site of Tenochtitlan: Mexico City. They gradually filled in and built over all of the lakes that had provided the Aztec with food, water, and protection.
Before I started this blog, I didn’t know that any of the codices had survived. Most people don’t know they ever existed.
Another day, another racist caricature in polish TV show “Twoja Twarz Brzmi Znajomo” (“Your face sounds familiar”). Polish celebrities dress up as various famous singers and perform their musical numbers, unfortunately often relying on blackface to dress up as black performers. Previously, actress Katarzyna Skrzynecka used tanning agent to darken her skin for the role of Tina Turner and later used face prosthesis and dark paint to dress up as Louis Armstrong, this time singer Paulla donned blackface and fake dreadlocks to pretend she’s Bob Marley and singer Mariusz Totoszko darkened his face to dress up as Pharrel Williams.
This is what Paulla and Mariusz look like without blackface:
Just found out about this show via looking up David de Gea's girlfriend (she's on the Spanish version of this).
Appalling.
How Do You Describe Your Gender Identity?
"I am a transexual woman. I am woman. I’m a woman in my mind and in my soul. No one is the guarantor of womanhood. Those people who identify themselves as women are women to me- and I love my womanhood."

NPR posted an article with a title asking why people don’t read anymore, but the content was just an April Fools joke. Then people started to embarrass themselves.

A quick PSA, because working in a New Age store I realize a lot of people don’t know this. Keep in mind this is the simple version.
The fella on the left-hand side, that’s Gautama Buddha, the Buddha, the central figure in Buddhism. Note that he is not considered a god, but a teacher and spiritual leader, the first to attain Enlightenment in his era. Note also how thin he is. This is because the Buddha fasted a lot. He was born Siddhartha Gautama. Buddha is a title, and not actually his name.
The fella on the right-hand side is not Buddha. This is a common misconception in the West. That is Hotai (or Budai or Hotei depending on the language), a Buddhist monk from China and folkloric hero. Hotai is thought by many to be a Buddha, but he is not the Buddha. Unlike Buddha, Hotai actually is revered as a god in Chinese folklore, although not in Buddhist practice.
This post is based on things I’ve been taught by my Buddhist coworker but if I forgot or mixed up something important and you are Buddhist and you notice, please let me know.
This has been an informational post. Have a nice day.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD EVERYONE READ THIS. READ IT. LEARN IT. PREACH IT. I AM SO TIRED OF EVERYONE BELIEVING THIS MISCONCEPTION.
