Malta is a tiny island surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and strongly influenced by it, winds are strong and frequent. As the main idea of our workshop is that we would like to build a human scale music box, we considered the facts and came to the conclusion that we should design a perpetual-motion machine which is driven by the wind, making use of the environmental advantages, As the windmill is spun by the wind, it drives the gears which drives the barrel which has spikes on it (which are have to be in an exact order to make the chosen melody sound good) which hit the quills of the comb and the outcome is a beautiful melody.
Having been experimenting with music boxes, consulting with acoustic specialists and engineers we decided to design one and hopefully build one in Malta.
