Astra A.K.A Starfall | X-men self-insert oc ✨

Astra (Star - Celestial body - illustrious person)

Astra is a demihuman who came from a shooting star that crashed on earth. The remnants of the star took shape of a young woman and thus, Astra came to life. She was discovered by an elderly couple who took her in, which marked the start of Astra's new life on Earth.

Astra has two forms. Her human form and her celestial form which is composed of the star that she had come from. Her abilities are as follows;

-Flight

-Super strength

-Light generation (The ability to generate light with various intensity)

-Stellar Manipulation (The ability to manipulate stars)

-Star bursts (Bursts of stars used to fire at opponents)

-Object creation (using stardust to create objects and or weapons)

-Solar flare (The ability to emit a bright flash of light of high intensity. Rarely used by her since it's a little risky)

-Super nova (Stellar explosion. Hardly used. Very dangerous unless used somewhere that isn't on earth. Preferably in space.)

Just saw Brand New Day and it was overall a very good movie (don't enjoy that they made Bill M Black when he was white in the source material, but I digress) but the movie hits on what's one of my favorite explanations for anti-mutant bigotry

The military industrial complex.

Metzger wanted Jean's powers to give to people of his choosing, and he was willing to subject her to all manners of evil towards that goal.

While a retcon to my knowledge, Weapon X is so named because it's the tenth in a long series of programs aimed towards creating superhumans (the first, Weapon I being Captain America himself). Weapon X focused on Wolverine's X-Gene, more specifically his healing factor, to keep him alive through the adamantium bonding process, and later iterations of the project produced Deadpool (Wolverine's healing factor) and Weapon X-23 (Laura Kinney, a clone produced from his genetic material).

Why start building a super soldier from scratch when the X-Gene is naturally occuring and more easily manipulated than trying to induce super powers in normal people and dealing with the potential mortality risk of them simply dying instead of developing into mutates.

While I'm not completely sure if any continuity has depicted it as such, the way I see it the military wants people to be afraid of mutants. If people are afraid, it's manufactured consent for them to abduct mutants for experimentation, to justify kidnapping, torture, brainwashing and all manners of other evils towards the end goal of understanding and weaponizing the X-Gene.

Furthermore, the more scared people are of mutants, the more justification they have to build Sentinels.

And once the Sentinels are done with Mutants, they already have hyper advanced semi-to-fully autonomous war machines geared towards both capturing and exterminating live targets, from civilians, non mutant parahumans, and enemies of the United States government, inside or outside it's borders

As an extension of this too, it's why I like Foxverse's Laura being latina, because of course disappearing brown women for their experimentations would be of no concern to the government

When I get blood samples at work sometimes they’re still warm from being imminently inside the patient’s veins and my hands are always cold because all the labs Ive work in are in the basement and they keep it kinda cold for whatever reason (and I’m also just a chilly kid).

And I clutch the little warm tubes of blood and feel this sick person warming my hands and I think about how kind you might be and how I wish I could hold your hand and how badly, how really really badly, I want you to get better and stay warm and hold someone’s hand again.

And anyway sometimes it’s better to not think so vividly about the people I’m doing tests for. I’m a good little cog in a vast machine of people all trying to heal and cure, and my cog feels so fucking small sometimes. But I hope the blood I prepare for you helps you breathe better and laugh and wake up feeling well rested.

We’ve never met but you warmed my hands and I want you to know I love you and I’m rooting for you.

"They didn't exist" (terra nullius). Complete denial of Indigenous presence in a given area (country, province, etc). Includes denial of Indigeneity, e.g. "Indigenous Peoples are Settlers too".

"If they did, they weren't here" (terra nullius). Denial that Indigenous People inhabit/travel/harvest/exist in a specific area. Often based on euro-centric definitions of evidence of occupation.

"If they were, they didn't use the land" (doctrine of discovery). Denial that Indigenous People have a connection with the Land. Often based on euro-centric worldview of the land as something to be owned and extracted.

"If they did, they didn't deserve it" (great chain of being). Denial that Indigenous People have rights to their Lands. Often based on euro-centric value judgements of "primitive vs. civilized", "nomadic vs. sedentary".

"If they did, they lost it" (right of conquest). Denial that Indigenous People retain their rights to their Lands. Often based on colonially imposed European systems of law/"might makes right" worldviews.

"If they didn't, it doesn't matter anymore" (Westphalian sovereignty). Denial that Indigenous Rights are still binding and take precedence. Often based on false claims of supremacy of colonial legal institutions and systems.

"If it does, we need to move on" (liberalism). Denial that violations of Indigenous Rights requires redress. Often based on claims redress is "disruptive/unfair/reverse racism" & false calls for "equality".

"If we can't, we are you" (self-indigenization). Denial of separateness of Indigenous Peoples and Rights. Often based on attempts to reduce Indigenous Rights to Human Rights, claim Indigeneity, etc.
