Just your average...Sanitized Inkling...working for the octarian army?

Brief rundown of Onyx’s journey so far/a timeline to keep all the Bullshit straight (mostly for my buddies in one of the splatoon rp servers I’m in)

Age 14: Picks up e-liter 3k for the first time. Joins Mineral Team along with friends from grade school, resolves to train hard and attempt to become professional turf player.

Age 15: Team switches focus to Tower Control. Comes into her own as a sniper, makes something of a name for herself in the pro community. Begins fashion modeling on the side.

Age 16: Notorious. Decides to go full-time and wrap up her education, graduates early. Is making enemies in high places, somewhat concerned for turf career as team begins growing distant.

Age 17: Recruited as Agent Three by Cuttlefish. Tells mothers that she’s leaving on contract for an important job, is given assurance that she’s “always welcome back home”.

Ages 17-19: Time spent working for New Squidbeak Splatoon

Age 19: Lured into the Deepsea Metro by a certain someone, deliberately selected for her endless ambition, ruthlessness and skill in combat. Falls for promises of ‘greater things’, gets precisely what she asked for. Dies.

Ages 19-22: Time spent in service of Commander Tartar

Age 20: Meets Amilea Kim, her universe’s Agent 8. Conspires quietly to rebel against Tartar. Onyx has no memory of her time as an Agent, but Amilea recognizes her for the harm she’s done. Decides to test her and give her another chance by recruiting her to escape effort. Amilea teaches her about the octarians at this time, and tries to show her their evident virtue. Presents first different view of octarian society that Onyx has ever seen, after inkling propaganda in her youth.

Age 22: Sets mutiny in motion alongside Amilea, usurping Kamabo Co’s commander and leading sanitized octarians to freedom. Almost controlled by Tartar into undermining escape attempt, stopped by Amilea. 

Age 23: Reintegrating herself into a new society, Onyx has extended humanitarian aid to the octarians and tried to help rebuild the domes and make up for damaged caused in life. Regained some of her memories of being Agent 3, frequently struggles with her own moral choices.

Age 24 (Current): Ongoing effort to ensure adequate repayment to the society she lives in. Engaged to Amilea, and happier than she’s ever been. Searching for a way to help the sanitized octarians rescued from underground.

Onyx headcanons 2: Electric Boogaloo (Octarian special)

Onyx speaks near-perfect Octarian, as it was the language used to by Tartar to communicate with their employees, and for the sanitized to communicate (somewhat) amongst themselves. She had to be a very quick study.

When she still lacked any of her memories, she failed to see a difference between herself and many of her coworkers. It wasn’t until she re-entered society and began to regain her memory that she grasped the social and political weight of one’s species...and the horror of what she had done for her own.

Onyx was deeply prejudiced when she was still Agent 3 due to inkling propaganda, historical revision and Craig’s warmongering. After being sanitized, though, and effectively reduced to a blank slate, she was introduced to a far more empathetic side of her former enemies. Nothing will make up for her crimes in life, but she’s proud to have grown as a person since her teenage years.

“...Yeah. I mean, Octavio’s gone, so hopefully the practice will die off. I wasn’t raised in Octarian society either-...Well, I mean, duh, I’m a cuttlefish...” She laughed and shrugged, “But it doesn’t sound great. Something tells me that they became so militaristic for a reason, though...that it boils down to inkling oppression, the Octarians hardening themselves to keep from being wiped out entirely. Old...pre-war pictures make it look a lot more hospitable.”

“...By the way, it’s called an Ultra Stamp. I mean, I think-...I haven’t actually used many of the new specials, last time I did real competitive battle it was with an e-liter 3k, and echolocators were still legal.” She laughed and shook her head. “What a weird fuckin’ trip it’s been.”

“Anyway, yeah. You’re a lot more agreeable when you’re not accusing me of attempted murder, actually...By the way, my name’s Onyx. Or we could go old school and say it’s some number, but neither number I’ve been called by really suits me anymore.”

Onyx scowled. “...A broken clock is right twice a day? Yeah, that one. Okay, real funny. But seriously, yeah. I mean, I know you probably think I’m just some extension of a paramilitary group even though I quit, but like...”

“Most of these evil corporations use child soldiers, and the fact that I’ve -been- a child soldier under the Splatoon is sort of the reason that I’m against that sort of shit. Being sent into combat not knowing what I was getting into kinda fucked up my life and my mental health worse than being sanitized ever did.”

“Point is. Being an agent was a mistake, corporations can go suck a fat one, and the only reason I’m loyal to the Octarians is because they’ve got a big ol’ power vacuum going on right now and I think it’d be fucked up not to help rebuild before another dictator gets hungry.”

“Anyway. Eat the rich. Yeehaw.”

Onyx Facts!

Can’t use a sting ray for the life of her. Untrained with most of the new specials. (Still has a FUCKTON of the old, illegal ones.)

Still has a key to the NSS armory! Thanks, old-jacket-found-in-locker-after-3-years-of-unuse. Life hack: Just have your alive self leave fun goodies for your amnesiac dead self to find!

She’s a lovely mix of a firefly squid and a reef cuttlefish! Thanks, moms. Very glowey! Also very frilly tentacles. Her glow freckles used to be color-changeable, but it’s basically just teal now. 

Has two wonderful married lesbian parents and a little brother. No longer in contact with any of them, and fears going back and having to explain her absence, but misses them bitterly.

I’ve been thinking a lot about sanitized octarians and the way they act/think/feel, both under Tartar’s control and otherwise. I love other people’s headcanons and various portrayals, and I’ve been trying to scrape something together of my own. Headcanons abound below!
