i like to think that in the pokémon universe, having extremely type-diverse teams is seen as really unethical and only really done by hyper competitive pokémon trainers, or champions or otherwise privileged people who would have the resources to facilitate it.

cuz think about it. it’s not just the gym leaders that have single-type teams, it’s a lot of the NPC trainers too. and even if their teams are more diverse, there’s usually one or two types the team generally revolves around. and like if you think about it, caring for the actual pokémon would be A LOT of work if they all need different forms of enrichment.

they’re animals at the end of the day. water types need water to stay hydrated (especially pokémon that are literal fish) and i can imagine a ground type like clodsire would need a mud bath every now and again, or maybe ice type pokémon can’t be around fire type pokémon because it’s just really uncomfortable for them. among like generally other things.

like champions definitely have the capabilities to take care of so many pokémon. ace trainer nepo babies probably do too if they’re have like rich parents or connections in the league.

so idk. maybe there’s a cultural reason gyms are all mono-type.
