"A robust affirmation of academic freedom is one that circulates to the entire college community, is publicly available, and supports the faculty's right to publish ont he controversial matters of public importance." These words have been published by the American Association of University Professors in solidarity with the recent attacks on academic freedom on one of Brooklyn College's faculty members. With the Professional Staff Congress, Brooklyn College is pleased to host Hans-Joerg Tiede, Senior Program Officer in the AAUP's Department of Academic Freedom, Tenure, and Governance on Tuesday, January 30, from 12:30 to 2pm in Woody Tanger Auditorium. This lecture is a Frederic Ewen Lecture in Civil Liberties and Academic Freedom. Professor Ewen taught in the Department of English until he was forced into retirement in 1952 for refusing to testify in an investigation by the Senate Internal Security Committee of communism and public schools during the McCarthy era. Present a valid ID upon entry to campus to attend.
