I really resent the way that, as a trans person, I have to constantly prove and explain my transness. I hate the way that who I am becomes a political discussion over dinner, an argument between family members. My existence is something I'm expected to uphold with studies that I should be able to recite and name the authors of in seconds, with scientific proof. It's never enough. I have come to loathe the word 'identify'. It's become a shorthand for reminding me that my sex and my gender aren't truly what I say they are and it's all a game of play-pretend. I am bitter and I am angry and I am hurt but I am expected to keep a good image, for my safety, in order to prove that trans people aren't a threat. I am expected to be polite when I'm misgendered when I'm threatened when I'm laughed at and it is always, always always on me. It's my burden. As a trans person I am always presumed guilty.
