To maximise the potential of my stand I spent a significant portion of the last week working on a catalogue of some of my most print-worthy works. I was originally going to only print a few for the purposes of the fair itself, but after some thinking decided it would be nice to give you all the option of receiving a copy yourselves. I think it would make for a pretty nice coffee table book. It will be exclusively available for pre-order starting today and during @theotherartfair itself.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The catalogue is a 56 page, perfect bound book in a square format, 210x210mm. 2/2⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ As it turns out there's a character limit to Instagram caption and my sentimental ramblings went over it, so I'm having to split this post in two.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ 3.My first ever solo show - Exemplary Home at KO-OP⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Not much to say here beyond what I've already covered in posting about the exhibition. Except perhaps to say that the magnitude of the milestone that is putting on a show independently at my age, mid-pandemic isn't to be understated, and I'm very grateful to have done it. @vvvladimirovv , @ko_op_sofia, @desislavaolovanova , I wouldn't have managed it without your help! 🙏🏻⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ 4. First 4-figure print sale - "Rubble, Northwestern Bulgaria, 2019"⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ As a consequence of my show, I've also managed to part with one of the largest works I've ever created, and one of my favourites. It was an important precedent to set and one that's largely enabled my upcoming participation at TOAF, so again, insanely grateful!⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ 5. And, last but not least,⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ It's been almost two years (or about 15 by our metrics) with the most incredible woman in my life, @vickiianhamilton . I'm not super keen on social media PDA, but it wouldn't have felt right not to mention that in a post, celebrating the things I've been grateful for over the past year. Thank you for always having my back and for putting up with me every morning before I've had my coffee. 1/2⁠⁠ 🎂A bit of a different one today as it's my birthday!🍾⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I haven't really done this before, but I figured this year I'll be a bit self-indulgent and take some time to reflect and celebrate some of my achievements and significant moments over the last 12 months. The harsh reality is, the last two years have been largely difficult and thankless due to the pandemic, which has at times made it more than a little difficult to feel as happy or fulfilled as I ought to. So, I embarked upon a pleasant little exercise of reflection and came up with five highlights from the last year that I'm celebrating today.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ 1. Working at @theritzlondon with @jackhardyphoto⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ It was almost a year ago now when Jack threw me in the deep end as an assistant on a Christmas campaign shoot for The Ritz. I thoroughly enjoyed that day, and working with him genuinely taught me so much so quickly, whilst allowing me to enjoy one of my favourite industries in a completely new light (I was the light, usually 😁)⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ 2. Achieving third in the @beforecreating photography award⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The BECA Photo award is the largest photography competition in Bulgaria, and one that I entered somewhat on a whim, not really having been aware of the organisation behind it prior. Those that know me know how vocal I've been about the lack of opportunity and proper education within photography in Bulgaria, between the lacklustre higher education institution and the hit or miss nature of learning on your own with tips from social/Youtube, so I was insanely impressed and pleased to have met @dimitristefanov and the rest of the team at BECA who are truly building something beautiful over there. The prize came by way mere weeks before opening my show to the public and served to put me in the greatest possible mindset for my debut in my home country. One of the biggest reasons why it was important to me to showcase this project in Bulgaria, is that I want to see the northwest develop and grow. There's this tendency within my home country to always blindly chase progress, which is fuelled by Bulgaria always being in a state of catching up to the rest of the world. First, it was due to the Ottoman annexe, then it was the Soviet Union, now it's keeping up with the EU. And in this rampant pursuit, we've left behind the provincial, the rural, and with it, a whole lot of principles, culture and resources. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Wine is the perfect counterpart to a good opening - it spurs debate, it's easily scalable and, if enough thought is put into it, can bring a whole other dimension to the exhibition experience. That's why it was important to me that I choose the correct bottles to showcase at the event. A few weeks before the show I contacted my friend Kalin at @tempusvini and asked him if he can assist me in finding a collaborator within the wine industry in the north-west, and he absolutely delivered. He introduced me to Antoaneta of @ahinora.wines , who graciously agreed to present her first-ever vintage at my opening. In this, we had two artistic debuts in one evening, both of which were received wonderfully. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I have high hopes for the wine industry in Bulgaria, and believe it to be one of the potential pathways towards restoring interest, investment and also bringing back people to the north-western regions. I thus encourage those of you that have access to (good) Bulgarian wine abroad, to give it a shot, and those of you locally, to have a hop over to Kalin's and have a try as well - there's some mindblowing stuff happening over there! Installation views of "Exemplary Home" at @ko_op_sofia , courtesy of @kartchinski .⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ In stark contrast to my previous post, here are some images of the space, sans delightful guests.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ For those that missed it, the show encompassed twenty-one works from my project, as well as eight short pieces of diaristic text. The prints varied in size from 49x42.5 cm to 116x100cm and were all Giclée printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper. Some were framed, some weren't, and this was all done with the goal of creating a bit of a visual hierarchy and rhythm within the sequence. Working with a non-linear space, and doing so remotely, based on a floorplan (as 99% of the curatorial process happened whilst I was still in London) was definitely a challenge, but in times of global pandemics, I suppose these are the realities of being an early career visual artist.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ We'll be diving in more detail, regarding specific works, in future posts! When putting so much of yourself within a project and presenting it to people that you know have had similar life experiences there's obviously an awareness and maybe even an expectation of how effectively it will resonate, but I didn't expect this! So many of our guests expressed how touched they felt by the story told within "Exemplary Home", particularly those of an older generation that could also appreciate the angle of preservation and documentation of these environments. Multiple people stressed to me that it's important to remember that once the people, depicted in the images are gone, my parents' generation and my generation aren't really going to be around to replace them. There is so much in terms of folklore, dress, traditions, and lifestyle that looks like it will largely be lost to time, unfortunately. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ And as sad as that makes me, I'm also deeply touched that there are those out there that would envision my artefacts as something that adds longevity and protects the image of those spaces.
