Cheesy Zelda Valentines 2020 Edition
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Review
FYI - this will not be spoiler free. I don’t want anyone venturing into my review expecting me to only critique graphics or rave over the nostalgia I had with other games. I am including my entire review of the game under the read more.

2017 Cheesy Zelda Valentine’s Part 1
Why is skyward sword sad? (I have a few ideas, but I'd love to hear more)
(Sorry a bit later reply - I had a phone call) Ah yes, thank you for asking. I’m not even really focusing on the main parts of the storyline when I refer to the game being sad and leaving you a bit empty. Lanayru Desert always makes me a bit down. There’s so much left unresolved in that area. All the other areas are thriving with life while the desert is only left with remains of once was. Sure there’s timeshift stones, but they don’t bring back those lives. They’re still stuck in the past. So if you do happen to bring them back, all those characters are living as if they are still alive in their era. No character wants to recognize the fact that they are truly dead. By bringing them back, you give those characters back a false sense of life which inevitably be taken away from them soon.
Batreaux’s story also makes me sad. He wanted to befriend the humans so badly, but he couldn’t because he has the face of a monster. It reminds me of skull kid in ways too. He wanted to change in order to get new friends because he was such an outcast. It’s just that sad reminder in life that people can be very focused on just looks and first impressions. They refuse to dig down deeper into the personality of an individual.
Maybe I’ll expand more on background stuff later.
Actually it's months later and I'm finally deciding to expand on Skyward Sword being a p sad game. In my precious post, I didn't focus on any of the humans/hylians living in Skyloft. Cawlin is that awkward guy in life where nothing right seems to be going for him, especially his love life. The side quest has you taking his letter and deciding between giving it to Karane or giving it the toilet hand. However, Cawlin doesn't get the chick he wants in either because Karane has got high standards (aka Pipit) and won't settle for anything below that. It's not like you do anything to make Cawlin feel better after he's rejected or being stalked by the toilet hand. I understand Link and Cawlin aren't friends but let's be real - Link is the one who brought him into the mess and he doesn't seemed phased one bit about it. No regrets sucks to suck if you're Cawlin seems to be the attitude.
Anyway, let's move onto a more serious analyzation of Skyward Sword. Pipit's situation with his mom is glanced over, but there's definite tension in their little household. Pipit takes on all the stress and responsibility to take care of his mother because his father is not in the picture anymore. He's taken on this unbearable stress, and it doesn't help that Pipit's mother is careless with their money. She throws money at Link to clean their house because she's unmotivated to do so. She clearly doesn't care about the effects of her actions on Pipit. Their whole relationship is sad because you witness the family dynamic switch and how it degrades both people. They become shells of who they used to be.
Ooh the nature of the swords is pretty sad as well. The fact that the swords (Ghirahim and Fi) decide to have their personalities taken away just to be the most effective weapon is heartbreaking. They're willing to wreck themselves so their masters can be successful. I understand that's what their purpose is, but that doesn't make the situation better. In fact, both of them have the knowledge that their existence is only temporary and in reality, it's worthless.
Twilight princess is saddest to me. If you look at the animation when he shifts he looks like his in pain. But he does this over and over, to save hyrule, though it he could've stopped once he got through the twilight in the forest.
Link goes through constant suffering to save people who probably will not recognize his accomplishments afterwards. Many of the people of Hyrule are at a state of bitterness, not one of thankfulness. Even if the people do appreciate his actions, they’ll still turn his wolf form into one of the main villains in the story. Wolves are frightening, and who would want to believe they were saved by a wolf?
He also witnesses the destruction of Hyrule in all the provinces. In Eldin, Kakariko Village heavily hints at having quite a few of the villagers to have been killed by the Shadow Beasts. The Ordon kids end up taking care of some of the businesses and “replacing” the dead villagers.
I’m on my phone not confirming anything right now, but if I remember correctly Shadow Beasts are linked with being Twili that Zant turned? That’s so sad because the people are just being used as attack dogs to distract you. There’s no underlying care that’s evident in Zant’s character either for any of the beasts. Everyone surrounding him is going to be used for his benefit (truly Ganondorf’s in the end.)
In my opinion, the saddest and most touching part of SS was Impa's dedication to Hylia/Zelda. I can't even imagine waiting for over a thousand years for an event that may or may not save the world. Also, the saddest moment in the whole series for me was actually the end of WW. That emotionally knocked the wind out of me.
I don’t disagree. Dedicating yourself to the protection of a single person would be difficult, even if there’s little to no life on the surface anymore. She’s incapable of doing the little things anymore. She’s in the temple waiting for the hero and trying to use her abilities to keep evil at bay. Impa is a really complex character, and she’s not written to be adored by all the fans. I did not appreciate her in the beginning of playing Skyward Sword. When you go into the past, her resentment towards Link is clear. Despite Link saving her and Zelda, Link is reprimanded for making too many mistakes. There’s no grace in the past for Link.
In hindsight, I don’t really begrudge Impa for those comments like I once had. For her, Link didn’t have the image of the hero she imagined. Perhaps, if she made those comments, then the true drive of a hero would emerge to save the world. The saving of the world rested in Link’s hands, and no one wants to live in the destruction of it.
Wind Waker has some twisted moments. The ending is not the happy one that you hope for it to be. As a push for the future generation to bring back Hyrule and not be stuck with the past, the King sends Link and Zelda to the surface in bubbles while he stays in the castle. He basically drowns himself with the past of Hyrule. He’s not going to be the one to live on and tell the tales of Hyrule anymore. The pressure has been shifted to Link and Zelda instead.
Majora’s Mask takes the crown for me in the saddest moments in the series that had effects on me. There’s so many things that drag you down in the game. You can play the game completely unaffected, but I feel like you’re missing the main point of the game. It’s whole purpose was to showcase that life doesn’t go the way any of us expect. We aren’t the master controllers. Just because you have Ocarina doesn’t allow you to magically save everybody’s problems. Their deaths may be delayed by defeating Majora’s Mask, but the characters are facing their own daily tragedies that aren’t neatly tied up at the end.
