Broadway HQ is a Modern Day RP for characters of your beloved musicals. We have seen them on stage and screen but what if they were simply living life in the Big Apple? If you ever wanted to bring those characters to life, now is your chance!
We are a semi appless, para based roleplay and all of the characters are simply inspired by roles from musicals. Now is your chance to get to deep dive into the characters that you love and explore them like you have never done before. Will they live out their dreams of being the next big Broadway Star? Will they open up their own bakery? Or live a simple life, nothing too flashy, with maybe a few cats? Whatever they do, itâs completely up to you.
Iâm curious, what are some characters from your favorite musicals that you would like to see around town? Let me know! Personally, Iâd love to Julia Trojan, Donny Nova, Jimmy Campbell, Jack Kelly, Racetrack Higgins, David Jacobs, Elphaba, Glinda, Marius- Honestly the list goes on!
The word âmotherâ was always complicated for Crutchie. He had had a mother at one point, one that he was sure loved him and cared about him. But she had been ripped away from him, along with his father, much too soon. All he had of her was the old folded picture that he kept in his wallet as he bounced foster home to foster home. He could remember the day he was gifted that simple but irreplaceable picture. Crutchie had been sitting in his social workers office for some reason or another and she simply slid the picture across to the table him. And there in front of him was his family. Baby him, no older than a year old smushed between a mother whose eyes mirrored his own, who had freckles across the bridge of her nose as well, and a father who had his same lips and facial expression.
It broke his heart that he had no memories of them- of her. And when Motherâs Day rolled around every year, there was a never ending ache in his chest. Wondering what she was like, what they would be doing on Motherâs Day to celebrate her. Would he have had siblings? Would they have gone on family trips? It was those thoughts and the simple image of her that often lulled him to sleep on Motherâs Day. It was her imaginative voice and kind words that would block out the screaming and yelling and punishments that came more often than not in the foster homes. It was the urge of wanting to make her proud, where ever she was, heaven or somewhere else, that kept his drive alive. That pushed him to survive the homes that tried to drown him.
The idea of a mother, to have a mother figure in his life disappeared the older he got. Knowing that most people wanted the cute young kids. Not teenage boys who had been in the system for fifteen years. And surely not a kid who had a bad leg- who needed the support of his forearm crutch the get around. As he watched his fellow foster siblings get adopted, he knew that it wasnât a reality for him, that all he could do was be happy for them. And truly he was.
So when a nasty hospital visit ended with him going to the place of a lady named Shelly, he didnât know how much his life would change. How in those first few days, her love and kindness filled every inch of the small Manhattan apartment. That she truly meant it when she asked about his day, wanted to hear how he was, and was there on his rough leg days. But Crutchie had refused to get his hopes up. Knowing that she too would tire of him in a matter of time and he would be on to the next foster home. One that wouldnât have already started feeling like home over the course of a week.
And suddenly weeks had turned into months- Months that had made him feel more alive than he had ever done in his sixteen years. There was no worrying about doing something wrong and being hit for it. No wondering if he would be allowed to eat, or if there was clothes that would fit him. The list went on and on and the thing that astonished him the most was that Shelly loved him, that she provided for him, and cared for him no questions asked.
It was about six months in when Shelly had called him down for dinner, a rather serious look on her face that made Crutchies stomach twist uncomfortably. He had stupidly let himself think that maybe this was where he belonged but the bubbling anxiety told him differently as he sat across from Shelly. She was going to tell him that she couldnât handle him anymore, that it was time for him to move on to the next family. So Crutchie sat there, trying not to fidget in the chair, waiting for Shelly to break the painful silence when she simply slid a paper across the table to him.
Adoption papers.
She wanted to adopt him. Wanted to become the mom he had always dreamed of. There was no telling how long both of them cried after Crutchie told her yes, yes heâd love for her to adopt him.
After the adoption, days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months of having a home; of having a mother. And before Crutchie knew it, the months had turned into one year, and one year had turned into two years.
And now as he sits across the table from her at Motherâs Day brunch- the word mother holds a new and special meaning. While Shelly might not have given birth to him, might not have raised him for sixteen years, she had given him everything and more a mother could in two years. Safety, love, security, hope, warmth, happiness, kindness, compassion, strength. She had held him while he cried for everything the foster homes had put him through, been by his side when his leg hurt so much he could barely moved. Been front row and center at every choir and drama performance. Had thrown the biggest birthday parties for him. But most of all, she had given him a loving place to call home.
So with a wide grin on his face, he slides her over a neatly wrapped present. And speaks such simple worlds he thought heâd never get to say.

I have a snow day from work tomorrow and I really want to get back into writing fanfics. So if you have any holiday prompts youâd like to see, feel free to send them in! Iâll try to get as many as I can done.
for the holiday prompts, what about Jack and Crutchie's first Christmas together as kids, either in the lodging house if you wanna go with canon era or a foster home if it's a modern au??
(Since I got another one for Canon Era, Iâll go with Modern AU for this one! Thanks for the prompt <3)
Crutchie could count on one hand how many Christmases he had celebrated in his ten years while being in foster care. And from the looks of it, there wasnât going to be a Christmas this year either. Of course he was fine with this, the more time you spent in the system, the less you believed in Santa and Christmas miracles. However, that didnât stop him from wanting to make sure that Jack had a good Christmas. Jack, who had only been in the system for a few months, who would be spending his first Christmas without his family. The thought made Crutchieâs stomach churn. From what Jack had told him, he had been with his father up until this point in his life. Like his mother, Jackâs father had gotten sick and passed away, and with no other family to take him in, well, Jack found himself exactly where Crutchie was.
When Jack was placed into the foster home with Crutchie, the two of them had taken an instant liking to one another, and from then, the two boys had been glued at the hip. Except for now, which had Crutchie hidden away in one of the back bedrooms, sitting crossed legged on the floor, tongue poking out as his little fingers worked to tie a knot. Getting money to buy Jack presents was highly unlikely, but the little bit he managed to come bu, he shoved in his shoes, saving it all up for the exact reason. Hoping that he would be able to get Jack something very small, as well as making him something.
There seemed to be an ongoing tradition between the two of them, where they would swap stories back and forth late at night. Jackâs stories were always about Santa Fe, how it was so clean and green and pretty. That he bet if they ran away to there, the air would cure Crutchieâs leg, that they could swim in the rivers. Crutchieâs on the other hand, were always fairy tales. About a handsome Prince named Jack and a boy from the Village named Crutchie. The stories were elaborate, sometimes stretching over the span of several nights, and more often than not, the only thing that could get the other through the darkness that seeped through the crack of the walls. And as much as Crutchie didnât want to admit it, it was only a matter of time before one of them would be moved to a new foster home. And then who would be there to tell Jack stories?
So for the last few weeks, he spent all the time he could scribbling stories onto construction paper. Ones about far off lands where there was all the food you could eat, where there was safety and love and happiness. Where sometimes Knight Crutchie would save Prince Jack and they would run off to Santa Fe together. He squeezed as many stories as he could onto the paper that he had, scribbling stick figures in the corners as well. And now, he was almost done with them. Just tying the pieces of paper together with string he had found in the trash. Once it was all put together, he sat back, holding the book out with a wide grin on his face. Admiring stick figure him and Jack on the front holding hands. His messy eleven year old handwriting declaring, âStories For Jack Kellyâ across the front of it.
-
It was yelling from downstairs that woke him up a few mornings later and as much as he tried to snuggle back in against Jack, he just couldnât. Something squirmed in his stomach from the yelling and he briefly found himself wanting escape from the screaming, until he remembered something and sat straight up. The movement must have woken Jack too because the other boy was rubbing his eyes and looking at Crutchie for an explanation.
âItâs Christmas!â
He beamed and for a brief second, he could see Jackâs entire demeanor change.
âOh.â Jack had breathed out and was moving to lay back down before Crutchie propped himself onto his good knee, hands reaching out for Jack.
âI got you something!â He beamed widely and watched as a mixed of emotion fluttered across Jackâs features before he too settled on a smile.
âCrutch-â
But Crutchie cut him off with a shake of his head, reaching for the old underarm crutch, he hoisted himself up and walked across the bare room to where his bag was. Pulling out not only the book he had made for Jack but a piece of banana bread from the bakery around the corner and one of the best shirts he had.
âI didnât have paper to warp themâŠâ Crutchie said, cheeks flushing a little red as he made his way back over sheepishly. Sitting back down next to Jack, he handed the items over. Silence fell between them and suddenly he felt like he needed to explain himself.
âI know you love banana bread so I wanted to get you some, and the shirt, well its one of my nicest ones and I wanted you to have something nice too. And the book, I love our stories and in case⊠in case we ever get put into seperate homes, I wanted you to still have them and-â
It was Jackâs sniffling that cut him off and he looked at Jack as he rubbed at his red rimmed eyes. âCrutchâŠ.â
âIm sorry, if you dont like them!â Crutchie squeaked out but before he knew it, Jack was wrapping his arms around him and pulling Crutchie in close. For a second the two of them sat there, arms wrapped tight around each other. Clinging to each other, afraid that if they would let go, this moment in time would simply slip away from them.
âI love them⊠Thank you so so so muchâŠ.I wasnât⊠expecting anything since dadâŠ.â Jack breathed out, his eyes still bright red. âBut⊠but this is the best presents ever. I donât have you any thing though⊠Im sorry Crutch.â
But Crutchie was already shaking his head, arms going back around Jack. âI got you, Jackie. Thatâs all I need for Christmas.â
I have a snow day from work tomorrow and I really want to get back into writing fanfics. So if you have any holiday prompts youâd like to see, feel free to send them in! Iâll try to get as many as I can done.
âYou two are never going to find an apartment at this rate.â Katherine laughed and all Crutchie could do was give his head a shake in return.
Though he knew that she was right, they had been looking for an apartment for months now, and with Christmas right around the corner- Well, Crutchie was slowly giving up any hopes he had of him and Jack celebrating the holiday in their new place. It wasnât that he minded them both still living at home but they were both ready to move out, to start the next chapter of their lives together.
âWe keep looking at places that seem so promising, I even thought we found the perfect place the other day until we went to fill out the application and Jack said he was second guessing it.â Crutchie said after a few seconds, hands tightening around his mug of coffee that sat in front of him.
âWas that it? He was just second guessing it?â Katherine asked and Crutchie bit at the inside of his cheek some.
âWhat if heâs second guessing about moving in with me?â Crutchie asked, the words tumbling out of his mouth before he could stop them. The nagging worry that had been eating at him for months since they had talked about wanting to get their own place together. Maybe Jack was second guessing moving out, maybe he was second guessing being with Crutchie-
âGulliver.â
The use of his real name cut through his thoughts and he looked up at Katherine, her face clearly saying she knew that he was lost in his own thoughts. He flashed her an apologetic smile.
âAll weâve heard about from Jack for weeks is about you two getting a place together. How he cant wait to wake up with you every morning and really, as much as I love you two, itâs a bit gross how in love you both are.â
Crutchie couldnt help but laugh at that. âSo you really think hes not having second thoughts and second guessing this because of me?â
Katherine leaned forward some, âThereâs no way youâre the reason he wonât settle on an apartment. You have three weeks before Christmas, just keep looking.â She gave him a reassuring smile and squeeze to the hand. All he could do was hope that Katherine was right, that Jack still wanted this as much as he did.
-
âSo itâs on the fifth floor?â Jack asked as they stood in the doorway of the apartment building. Crutchie looked between him and the broker, shaking the snow from his hair as they stood there. Wondering if Jack would even go up to look at this apartment or skip over it like the last two they had been at.
âCorrect, sir.â
âAnd itâs just the stairs?â
âAgain, correct sir.â
âIs there roof access?â
âYes, would you like to go look at it?â
âNo.â
âYes.â
Crutchie sighed and looked over at Jack, who was giving him what he called the stubborn Jack look. He looked back to the man that was supposed to be showing them the apartment and gave him a small smile, âCan you give us a second?â
âCertainly.â
Crutchie waited until the man was out of ear shot and he pulled Jack to the corner of the lobby of the apartment. Jack crossed his arms over his chest, which Crutchie would have found more intimidating if Jack wasnât a few inches shorter than him.
âLets at least go up and look at it, Jack.â Crutchie tried, reaching out to touch Jackâs arm.
âNo.â
âJack- You canât turn down an apartment before we even see it.â
âI can.â
Crutchie leaned on his crutch, running his free hand through his hair, his mind racing back to the talk he had with Katherine yesterday. How could she be so sure that Jack wasnât second guessing moving in with him? What else would have him so reluctant to agree to any apartments they had looked at- even the ones they had both fell in love with?
âIs it me?â The words tumbled out of his mouth before he could stop them once more. âDo you not want to move in together now?â
âCrutchie-â
âBecause if it is, just tell me now so I donât get my stupid hopes up of moving in with you, Jack Kelly.â
âI mean- Part of it is-â
The word cut through him like the winter wind that was howling outside and before he knew what was happening, Crutchie was turning around and heading out of the door. The coldness of the wind ripping through him as he made his way down the sidewalk.
âCrutchie! Wait! Gulliver!â
He had been so stupid to think Jack wanted this was much as he did so he kept walking, trying to hold himself together so families passing by didnât see him completely lose it on the sidewalk. Focusing on putting his foot and crutch down so he didnât slip and fall on the snow and ice, ignoring the call of Jackâs voice as he continued to walk. They had had so many talks about getting married, about getting a place together, having their own home, and now it was like everything was crashing down around him.
How stupid could he be? And now the heavy ring box felt more pronounced than ever in his pocket. The ring he carried around with him wherever they went, waiting for the perfect time and moment to propose to Jack but if the other boy didnt even want to move in with him now- He gave a sharp shake of his head as he rounded a corner, snow pellets pelting him in the face as he walked against it. His legs and crutch carrying him blocks through sludge and dirty snow until he was finally home, climbing the stairs to the apartment of his mom, where he could hide in a pile of blankets in his bed for the rest of forever.
-
Crutchie didnât even remember falling asleep but it was the bed dipping down and a body climbing under the covers with him that eventually woke him up. He blinked hard against the evening light until the outline of Jack came into view. His first instinct was to turn away, put his back to Jack and not even look at him. But Jack reached out a hand to push the hair off of Crutchieâs forehead and he instantly melted under his touch.
âI wish you would have waited and let me explain.â Jack said softly, his fingers still pushing the mess of hair off of Crutchieâs forehead.
âIâm sorry. I shouldnât have been such an ass and took off-â Crutchie started off softly but was cut off as Jack placed a kiss to his forehead.
âNo, I should have started it off better than what I did. Here, scoot over.â
Crutchie shifted over a little bit and Jack climbed onto the bed next to him, laying his head down on Crutchieâs pillow and wrapping his arms around the other boyâs waist.
âWhat I meant was, I canât settle on an apartment because Iâm worried about you.â Crutchie went to cut Jack off but he placed a kiss against Crutchieâs lips. âLet me explain? Please?â
After having ran off on him earlier, that was the least Crutchie could do so he gave a nod.
âI know youâre more than capable of climbing stairs but when I hear the apartment is on the fifth or seventh or third floor and itâs just stairs, it makes me worried. I know you can do it, I know you donât mind but I mind. The thought of you trying to do that on a bad leg day? And what if Iâm not there to help you if youâre hurting? What if the floors are slick and you slip on a stair and fall? Itâs happened before and if it happens while youâre on your own-â Jack trailed off and gave a shake of his head, and Crutchie felt his heart swell with love for the other boy.
âThis is going to be our home Crutchie. A place thatâs supposed to be safe and how can I feel okay agreeing to somewhere that might not be safe for you? Why canât New York just get it shit together and put damn elevators in apartments?â Jack asked after a few second and it was Crutchieâs turn to reach out and brush the hair off of Jackâs forehead.
âYouâre so freaking good to me, Jack Kelly.â He said gently, âYou donât have to worry about me, even if I do slip or something on that stairs, Iâll be okay. You know I donât mind. I just⊠want a place with you so badly. I want a home with you.â
âAnd I want a home with you too, Crutch, I really do. But it makes me sick to my stomach knowing it might not be safe for you. That you could get hurt. And I think thatâs a worry Iâm always going to have- even though I know youâre more than capable to take on a bunch if stairs.â Jack paused for a second, relaxing under the brush of Crutchieâs fingers. âBesides, someone has to worry about you since you donât worry about yourself.â
Crutchie gave a snort of laughter and pulled Jack even closer to him, tucking the other boy under his chin. âAnd it means a lot to me that you care that much. It really does. I just donât want us to pass up on a place we both love because you have that worry. Itâs not fair to you, to make you settle for a place you might not like as much just because it isnât that accessible.â He tightened his arms around Jack some. âItâs gonna be your home too, I want it to be somewhere you love. Weâll figure out ways around stairs on my bad days.â Crutchie reassured him, running his fingers along Jackâs back and feeling the other boy instantly relax against him,
They were both quite for several minutes, just holding onto each other, as the wind howled outside of Crutchieâs bedroom window. He could have easily fallen right back asleep as they laid there if it hadnât been for Jack wiggling to sit up some. Looking up, Crutchie gave him a questioning look.
âThat apartment with the fire escape and second bedroomâŠ.â
âThat we could use as an art studio for you-â
âIt was what- on the second floor?â
Crutchie nodded softly, âYeah, the second. Just one flight of stairs really.â
âThatâs the one that had the giant window seat and built in bookshelves too, right?â
âYeah, it is babe.â Crutchie replied gently, trying to hide the smile that was tugging at the corner of his lips. Especially when he remembered how Jack had lit up about the exposed brick walls and the thought of having a true artist studio.
âAnd youâd be okay with it? The stairs I mean?â
âLove, our highschool had more stairs than that and I survived it for four years.â
Silence fell between them for a second and Crutchie could almost see the gears turning in Jackâs head. Wondering if he too remembered how they both had instantly fell in love with the apartment when they stepped foot in it. How Jack had made the comment that it was the first apartment that felt like home- how he could see them raising their future kids in it.
âYou promise youâd let me help you up and down them when you need it?â
âIf it makes you feel better, than yes, babe. I promise.â
The grin that stretched across Jackâs face at his words made his heart swell once more with so much love for the other boy. And Crutchie knew that even if he didnât need help on the stairs, he would let Jack help him anyways- especially if his safety meant that much to Jack. How someone could care so much about him was something Crutchie couldnt wrap his head around.
âDo you think we can go sign the paper for it tomorrow?â Jack asked, his grin stretched clear across his face. Crutchie pulled him down and placed a series of kisses all along Jackâs cheeks and the bridge of his nose.
âYes, yes, yes. Iâll call her first thing in the morning.â
âWeâre gonna have a home! Our own place!â Jack beamed widely, falling down against Crutchieâs chest, Jackâs word echoing over and over in his head. They were going to have a place of their own, a place the two of them would get to call home together, and that was all he had ever wanted.

Sooo. I decided to try and write a multi chapter Jack/Crutchie story that is slightly based on the Newsies Blogverse that Iâm apart of here on Tumblr! Give it and read and let me know what you think!
<3
Summary:
For the last fifteen years of his life, Crutchie Morris has been shuffled from one foster home to another. After all who would want to adopt a sixteen year old with a bad leg? But little does he know that his entire future is about to change course and for once something good might just be coming his way.
When will the newsies fandom understand that any variation of cr*p/cr***le is a slur and should NOT BE USED like itâs not even remotely okay so stopped including it in your fanfics/head canons/etc đ
Where you at the nc newsies cause I saw it today too!!? I loved the crutchie and Katherine slapping Jack was GREAT but so surprising
Yes, I was at Newsies in NC. At the one in Raleigh this past week. The Crutchie was so amazing and I agree, Katherine slapping Jack was the biggest surprise ever. My friend and I turn to each and just gasp because we werenât expecting that but it was so great!!
Jack gave crutchie a picture of him riding a palomino- in letter from refuge, he writes his letter to jack on the back of it. THAT BOY CARRIED THAT PICTURE WITH HIM EVERYWHERE HE WENT OMG
also dad crutchie in the refuge- instead of getting yelled at, a boy wakes from a nightmare and he shushes him back to sleep oh my heart
Crutchie likes to shimmy ⊠A LOT
âA smile that smells like butterâ = sexy crutchie stanky leg??????? It was cute
Honestly bless crutchie Morris
Jack broke his crutch when he whacked the delancey brother- was a badass and improvised by using it as a cane
Very angrily yelled at Snyder when he hand cuffs him
seriously bless this kid
Jack and crutchie were SUPER tactile
Jack and finch touching crutchie leg and finch nodding towards it as if asking if heâs okay in the deli scene
Adorable little leg shake when predicting the weather
Specs, finch, and Romeo having accents! Specs and finch was Irish, Romeo was Italian
SPOT COLON HAD HIS CANE THIS IS ALL
Davey is the best tapper in the entire world and stole entire king of New York
- you lead those dancing newsboys Davey
Jack stole something to believe in- also instead of kissing him during something to believe in, Katherine slapped him
Instead of Davey going with into the world, it was crutchie!! Davey followed after them and got the door slammed in his face
Crutchie was for sure second in charge to jack and the boys looked to follow his lead more often than Davey
Pulitzer had people dress in during the bottom line- it was weird. He had on red socks and made them put his shoes on. It was concerning.
Once and for all- fuck me up. Threw single papers followed by selling them in the streets to people: aka I cried yet again during this song
Did I mention that Davey was a tap dancing god?????
So I just went and saw a community production of Newsies and wanted to jot some things down about it because !!!!! it was just so so good and incredible and ahhhh.

Some of the newsies had Italian, Jamaican, British, and Irish accents!!!
* there was a talk back afterwards and the person playing Albert said they identify as trans so it was important to bring that to the role of Albert. And the crutchie actor said he identifies as gay so bringing that to crutchie, especially his interactions with jack was super important to him as well.
There was also some lyric changes??? During the world will know, something to believe in, and once and for all. Which idk why but they were there.
Iâm sure thereâs more Iâm forgetting but ahhhhh. This was just so good and the cast was amazing. I loved the casting choices and how each person bright a freshness to these characters. It was really really good and Iâm so glad I went!!!
