HURRICANE SCREENING AND Q&A
Message from the band:
The band will make an appearance at the Montalban Theater in Los Angeles on February 21st as lead singer Jared Leto hosts a screening and Q&A for the director’s cut of his controversial video/short film for the band’s song “Hurricane.” The Bartholomew Cubbin’s directed film was banned or restricted to nighttime broadcast on many networks around the globe when it originally premiered in November and sparked discussions about censorship throughout the internet. The Montalban screening will be the first time that fans and media will have an open forum to discuss the video directly with Leto.
There will be tickets available at the door on the day of the event, first come first serve!
In the meantime, we will be giving away tickets at random on Twitter and Facebook.
Hurricane Screening and Q&A w/ Thirty Seconds to Mars at The Montalban Theater 1615 Vine Street., Los Angeles, CA 90028 8 pm
If you are unable to attend the screening, you can submit questions to the Q&A on twitter with the hashtag #HURRICANESCREENINGLA. Include your name and city/country. Or ask a question on the comment section below, also include your name and city/country.

London 2010 - Wembley
I had the following conversation with a fellow journalist as we were exiting Wembley Arena – is Jared Leto the ultimate frontman? Quite possibly. Maybe. Whatever, we came to the conclusion that he is, without a doubt, a brilliant frontman; whether this stems from his background in the performing arts or the genuine love he has for what he does, I’m not really sure, but what I do know is that he’s the heart and soul of 30 Seconds To Mars, and good grief, does that man have lungs.
The atmosphere on Tuesday night at Wembley began as it ended – alive, ever so slightly dramatic, ever so slightly hyper. At the start of the show, a dark grey curtain separated crowd from band during most of ‘Escape’, only to drop down at the fan-sung crescendo of those famous three words: “THIS IS WAR”. What do we have here? Two Letos, a Milicevic, the rest of their band, and some of the biggest LCD screens I’ve ever seen. Yeah – this is quite a show.
Wasting no time and jumping straight into ‘Night Of The Hunter’ – arguably the best track from their latest, very commercial but very excellent LP, ‘This Is War’ – Jared leaps around the stage like an epileptic frog, donning a black knee-length military coat and that infamous new mohawk. The man commands the crowd, commands the stage, and commands his band. Many, I’ve found, have been a little cynical about Mars since their inception, seeing Leto’s band as another case of actor-wants-to-be-a-musician-too. But he’s a born performer – so what’s the harm in that? And his voice is astounding.
Treating the crowd to an excellent mix of old and new – everything from the ear-shattering space-metal of ‘Buddha For Mary’ and ‘ATTACK’ to poppy numbers ‘The Kill’ and ‘Closer To The Edge’, and, a personal favourite ‘From Yesterday’ (to which they played the video on the screens behind them – resulting in a little bit of an inward swooning session on my part – do not judge me, good people, I have eyes). Reminding us how much they love their fans and how often they encourage involvement, the band pulled about thirty of them onstage for the ‘Kings And Queens’ encore, joined by support LostAlone and Street Drum Corps; an encore that, in everyone’s opinion, came way too soon because no one seemed to want this to end.
“Look at you all,” Jared says, addressing the crowd. “This is it right here. This is the Mars fucking Army.” And what a perfect general he is. TW

Cardiff 2010 - International Arena
February 2010 in Cardiff and everything is miserable, cold and grey so what better cure for the quiet city blues than the injection of some Californian sunshine and Hollywood style courtesy of Street Drum Corps and 30 Seconds To Mars. Contrary to popular rumour the Drum Corps turn out not to be a majorette troupe from Hounslow but, rather bunch of tribal proto-punks who play a variety of makeshift percussion instruments and prove to be the perfect warm-up act; whipping the crowd up into a state of near hysteria when vocalist Bobby Alt leaps off stage to join the kids in the moshpit. We’ll undoubtedly hear more from them in the UK before too long.
Tonight is all about the epic majesty of 30 Seconds To Mars though and they don’t disappoint the thousands who’ve turned out to see Jared and the band in the flesh. As you might expect from an acclaimed movie star Leto is a master of theatrics and from the moment the curtain falls and the band appear in a blaze of light his magnetic charm is inescapable. Sporting a new Strummer style Mohawk he thrills the crowd with his relentless energy, throwing himself about the stage eager to commune with every last person in the audience. The majestic sweep of the performance combines the ambition of U2 with the darker elements of Depeche Mode with early highlights including the frenetic ‘Night of The Hunter’ and the dystopian nightmare vision of future single ‘This is War’ which, in a surreal turn of events, is accompanied by a hailstorm of giant bouncy balls upon the rabid crowd. The appearance of the balls appears to set off Leto’s’ playful side as he leads the crowd in a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ to a crew member before doing his rockstar duty and screaming Hello motherf***ing Wales – not to be confused with England which, of course, sends the kids into raptures and allows him to indulge his pantomime fantasies and do the whole left side/right side bit. Someone should do a scientific analysis of the results of these things, I’m putting my money on the right side being loudest. Midway through the set the band disappears and the stage morphs into a giant pulsating mass of red fog which proves to be so mesmerising that nobody notices that Jared Leto has reappeared up in one of the boxes at the back of the arena. That is until a single spot picks him out as he serenades Cardiff with acoustic versions of ‘Echelon’ and ‘A Modern Myth’, which puncture any lingering hints of bombast. Does anyone have any requests? he foolishly enquires. JUMP! comes the inevitable response. I’m stupid but not that stupid he grins as he heads back down to ground level. It proves to be another set-up though as the band re-appear not on stage but at the mixing desk from where they perform a riotous ‘Buddha For Mary’ clad in giant Welsh flags. From then on, they just can’t lose with this crowd and the climax of the set, featuring the guys from SCD strafing the audience with giant spotlights plus a magnificent rendition of ‘Stranger In A Strange Land’ is nothing less than a jubilant, triumphal parade the likes of which have rarely been seen outside of imperial Rome. They came, they saw, they conquered.

INTO THE WILD BLOG #2 – SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2010
Been truckin around the UK and Wales and the shows have been incredible so far. So grateful to all of you who have come and spent your nights with us. Can’t wait to come back!
I took the train to Manchester on Saturday afternoon.
At night over 11,000 people showed up to make it our biggest show so far. My friend and amazing designer Lina Osterman made these jeans for me which are a LOT more comfortable than they look.
And for those of you who missed the show, this is what our set list looked like.
After the show I went in to check out the arena and see what a mess we made but we have an amazing crew and the evidence was gone in no time.
We played some old songs tonight in Cardiff from the very first record. I did Echelon acoustic from the balcony high above everyone on the floor. And then we all played Buddha for Mary from the B stage. It was like seeing long lost friends. Fun.
This Is War has really been one of the high points in the set. This is what it looked like from our soundboard tonight.
It was one of our hard workin gtr techs’ bday…we called him to the dressing room for an “emergency meeting” instead of a “sit down” he got a cake!
Searched high and low to no avail for bday candles but luckily at the last min we found one in our dressing room. Vanilla scented too.
One more day till Wembley!
P.S. We’re en route to London with our camera guy riding in the luggage bay for some reason…long story!

INTO THE WILD BLOG #1 – FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2010
After a few fun days in NYC working, seeing old friends, and getting a little haircut, courtesy of my buddy Terry Richardson…
…we headed to London!
I’m writing from the train to snowy Nottingham (insert clever Robin Hood reference) in the UK for the very first show of INTO THE WILD and although we’re a bit jetlagged and bit more exhausted, we couldn’t be more excited about our first arena tour. Never in a million years did we imagine this. Very very grateful.
We spent the last two days doing final rehearsals and are still plotting and planning. Def a lot of last min things to finish up (in typical Mars style). No warm up show here….the first show is sold out and will be packed with 8000 people! Fun.
Headed into soundcheck now…wish us luck!

30 SECONDS TO MARS EXPLAIN ‘KINGS AND QUEENS’ IN ‘FRAME BY FRAME’ - MTV News
In our continuing efforts to take you — the loyal music lover — deeper into the minds of today's artists, MTV News presents "Frame By Frame." Each week, we'll get a musician to give you the inside scoop on their latest music video.
By Matt Harper
30 Seconds to Mars is no stranger to Epic (yes, that's a capital "e") music videos. The band has already made ground-breaking videos in China and the Arctic, and while "Kings and Queens," their latest effort, was filmed in Los Angeles (with some scenes literally shot in frontman Jared Leto's back yard), the video is no less grand in scope.
Leto is passionate when talking about the video (no surprise there, considering he not only wrote the song but also directed the clip). "That shot was one of the earliest shots I storyboarded," he said, referring to an immaculately framed silhouette shot of dozens of bikers moving in slow motion, backed by a sunset. And while he admits that a lot of the shots were painstakingly set-up and difficult to get, a few of the iconic moments from the video were achieved through happy accidents. "We were supposed to shoot downtown, but shot the other way instead because the smog was so bad," he said of one sequence. So you can thank the notorious Los Angeles air pollution for those shimmering silhouette shots of the band.
Fun fact: "Kings and Queens" is filled with allusions to other art forms. Some of the bikers are dressed as the Baseball Furies gang from the cult movie "The Warriors," and at one point a frame of the video meticulously recreates underground artist Banksy's "Flower Chucker" graffiti. Leto even directed the video under the alias "Bartholomew Cubbins," a recurring character in the Dr. Seuss universe.
The video is split between two parts: 30STM performing on a cliff edge in Griffith Park, overlooking Los Angeles, and a gang of cyclists riding through an abandoned city. Leto couldn't speak highly enough about how great the bike-riding extras were during production of the video. After pointing out a few of the particularly committed members of the cast, Jared related that he "really couldn't get enough of them. That was my favorite part about editing, was trying to get these individuals in there."
"Kings and Queens" is an impressive video feat, and there was so much to say from this edition of "Frame By Frame" that we had to break it into two parts. Enjoy the first part below, and stay tuned for the second next week.
