August 11th is Mountain Day (山の日 Yama no Hi) in Japan. This day honors the country’s marvelous mountains—such as its most famous Mt. Fuji—and their blessings to the natural world. More than 70% of the landscape consists of mountains and they are all considered by the public to be sacred. People go hiking, trekking or skiing as a way to appreciate them and as a way to get closer with nature. Most stores and other establishments are also closed on this day.

Mountain Day is a recently established public holiday in Japan, proposed back in May of 2014 by the country’s mountain enthusiasts and officially celebrated since 2016.

Today is Marine Day in Japan and it looks like Mona is heading to the beach to celebrate!

Marine Day (海の日, Umi no Hi) is a holiday that falls on the third Monday in July. It is a day that honors and gives thanks to the ocean and its huge impact on Japan, a nation that happens to be completely surrounded by water. Some people take advantage of this holiday by visiting an aquarium while others—like Mona here—spend a day at the beach and take part in marine-type activities such as surfing, scuba-diving, fishing or boating.

How’s everyone enjoying the new Rhythm Heaven game? Several of the mini games are pretty funny and cute, the Flipside games are also quite challenging. I’m enjoying the vocal songs in this game; my favorites are “Soon be a lady” and “Tu es ici, moi aussi”.

I’m not finished with the game yet, but there’s tons of neat content.

Lulu’s Tanabata message from the Warioware website.

Tanabata (たなばた, “night of the seventh”) is an annual Japanese festival held on July 7th. It is also known as the Star Festival.

The festival celebrates the reunion of two star-crossed lovers, Orihime (a goddess) and Hikoboshi (a mortal man) which are represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively. According to Chinese and Japanese legend, Orihime’s father separates the two lovers across the Milky Way because of his disapproval of his daughter’s love for a mortal. Only on the seventh night of the seventh moon can the two lovers be together, hence the festival being held on the seventh day of the seventh month.

In the spirit of Tanabata, each person writes down their wish on a strip of colored tanzaku paper and hangs it on the stem of a bamboo leaf, which Lulu seems to be doing here.

By the way, did you know that there are two Warioware microgames that reference Orihime and Hikoboshi? In Warioware Gold, these games are “Rocky Reunion” and “Tearful Reunion” (respectively pictured below).

May 5th is Children’s Day (子供の日 or “Kodomo no Hi”) in Japan. It is a day that honors children, their personalities, their growth and their happiness. Up until 1948, the holiday was known as “Tango no Sekku” (端午の節句) which specifically honored young boys. As part of the celebration, carp streamers (鯉のぼり or “Koinobori”) of various colors and sizes are flown while attached to a pole. These carps are in reference to the Chinese legend regarding a carp turning into a dragon by successfully swimming upstream.

The large black carp represents the father, the medium-sized red carp represents the mother (expressing gratitude towards the mother is an important part of the tradition) and the small blue carp represents the child. Apart from the main three, other smaller carps can be included if there is more than one child in a family.

18-Volt’s Greenery Day message from the Warioware website.

May 4th is Greenery Day (みどりの日) in Japan. It is the day when people show appreciation and gratitude towards nature and its blessings. Originally, this holiday was referred to as “Birthday of the Emperor” in honor of Emperor Shōwa (昭和天皇) whose birthday fell on the 29th of April. After his passing in 1989—the year his son Akihito (明仁) would take his place as emperor—this day’s name and date changed to reflect Shōwa’s love of plants. Regardless, April 29th is still observed as “Shōwa Day”.

By the way, did you know that 18-Volt grows his own garden? He really is all about going green!

Looks like Wario is going on a LONG vacation in celebration of Golden Week (and the rest of May)!

Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク), or “Ōgon Shūkan” (黄金週間) is a week-long celebration in Japan that takes place between the end of April to the start of May. Japan sees an increase in tourism during this period and many employees get paid time off while companies temporarily close until the following week.

Four major holidays are celebrated during Golden Week:

-Showa Day (昭和の日) on the 29th of April

-Constitution Memorial Day (憲法記念日) on the 3rd of May

-Greenery Day (みどりの日) on the 4th of May

-Children’s Day (子供の日) on the 5th of May
