It’s a war of attrition, by Joe Papagoda
Portland based artist Adam Friedman has an ongoing fascination with our universe which he explores in his psychedelic works. His art expands on broad themes centered on time and space and other natural phenomenon. Friedman goes “Into the Aether” with his latest solo exhibition, now on view at Mirus Gallery in San Francisco. His show presents a new series of acrylic and acrylic aerosol pieces on canvas, 3D paintings, and a new mural inside the gallery.

Finding peace
Hello everyone, on today’s topic we’re going to talk a little bit about a thing that may sound a little bit mystical, but is nothing of such sort... finding peace... Peace can be found everywhere and in everything, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to be... and of course, its counterpart, chaos can exist in those places as well, so think deep on this one... Without beating around the bush any longer... what is peace ? and how can be find it ? Well, that depends... nobody can see peace or chaos with the same eyes because it is a very personal and intimate thing to relate to and not everybody can find peace over the exact same thing that you do, due to the fact that we are individuals with different points of view and identities... “What is chaos for the fly, is dinner for the spider” A bit silly quote if you ask me, but with a much deeper meaning behind it’s structure... and it’s meant to say that there may be things out there that make you feel at peace and nice, warm, relaxed, etc... what would, on the other hand, cause discomfort, repulsion and disgust to others... Now comes the real question behind all of this... should this bother you ? As always, the answer is no, my friends... we can not all be “synced” into one great mind that likes and hates the same things, regarding everything that surrounds us... all we can do is accept this fact and try to enjoy ourselves in our own personal way (within limits, of course... every bit of exaggeration or going over the top may be harmful not for other but to ourselves as well). Let’s give a really basic example for this... let’s say the thing you like most in life is watching a good movie from time to time... should you do it ? Absolutely ! What is there to stop you, or better yet... what is bad about it ? Go do it, and put a smile on your face... But let’s say you like breaking glass... you just do... you like the sound of it, you like the feeling you get when you hear that glass shatter on the concrete... should you do it ? Well, there’s a change of course here... Firstly you must take into account that it may be an odd habit and not everyone would be ok with it if you would start to do it in public or near other people. If that makes you really happy and brings you joy unlike anything else, you should still do it, but try to pick a good place to do it... safe from people who most certainly won’t share your passion. I hope you are starting to form a shape in your mind of the thing i’m trying to point out. If there is a thing you love doing, and you feel good while doing it, you should do it, no matter what others think, but you should consider, however, how “out of the ordinary” is that thing and if it’s ok to do it in public space. Because no matter how freely you are able to think and act you must always have an ounce of consideration for the comfort of the people around... just try picturing a guy, playing the accordion next to your eardrum, in the bus, just because that is what he loves doing... it’s awesome for him, but it’s a pain the the ass for you...
I may have jumped a little bit from the main subject with the examples and all, but I think you got the point by now. Now, moving a bit further into the depth of the subject... should you give up on something you love doing and something that makes you feel happy and brings you joy ? Unless the thing you are thinking about is destructive and harmful for other or yourself, you should NEVER even try to fathom giving it up (if that is not the case, you should keep true to yourself... it’s the one thing that brings it all together in this live... a strong and well defined identity and the guts to stand up and show who you are what you love doing to the world... with limits, as mentioned before).
Maybe some of you think “what if someone wants us to give up on those things... someone dear to us?” As I said before, you must first think if the things you love doing and the things that make you happy are destructive or notorious for you or the ones around you... if they are, then you should probably listen to that person and try to get them out of your life, bit by bit... if they are not, and the other person simply doesn’t agree with them, that, my friend is not your problem. The things you love doing define you as a person and set the very edges of your character and identity. If someone asks you or demands of you to eliminate those things for them, that means that they don’t really get you or they don’t accept and love you for who you really are...Â
Quick question... Why would you wants such a person around you ? When at the end of the day, all it matters is the understanding and synergy between two people... Feeling at peace with yourself can be quite easy if you know what you want and accept who you are, but feeling at peace next to another person is a bit more tricky. It takes a lot of understanding and a deep connection between two people, friends, lovers, family, etc, to turn out into a peaceful relationship.Â
If a person really likes / love you and wants to be with you, he / she will never demand you to change. And that’s the beauty of a great relationship with another person... when you can feel happy in your own skin and be free to express yourself and speak out your thoughts without feeling constrained by pretentious demands or hateful criticism... In a nutshell... everyone seeks happiness and wants to feel good by being themselves, so if you can’t enjoy that feeling with someone or someone takes that away from you, then you should consider talking with them regarding this issue... if they hear you out and still don’t get it, then it becomes painfully obvious that they have no intention of making you happy or don’t care at all about your person peace... some people are just selfish, self-centered... don’t let them bring you down and don’t let them take away the very things that make you, YOU.
This would be all for this weekly insight, I am Thomas Von Thalberg and i’ll see you next week with a fresh topic !
