Martha’s Vineyard is not only the largest island in New England, but one of the region’s most frequently visited tourist destinations. With average temperatures peaking between June and August, the area is especially active during the summer. The island, often referred to simply as the Vineyard, is comprised of six unique towns.
The “down island,” or eastern, towns of Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Vineyard Haven, also known as Tisbury, are the most densely populated. Edgartown was originally established in 1642 and continues to lure tourists and residents with its classic architecture and scenic South Beach. Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven, meanwhile, host the island’s two ferry ports.
The Vineyard’s less populous “up island” to the west is more rural. However, the towns of Aquinnah, Chilmark, and West Tisbury still attract visitors. Aquinnah is best known for the historic Gay Head Lighthouse and the adjacent Gay Head Cliffs, while West Tisbury offers a variety of quaint charms, including the famous Field Gallery dancing lawn sculptures.

Elaborate Custom Home on Quitsa Pond, Designed by Tate Builders
Thomas “Tom” Tate has led operations at Tate Builders, Inc., as the owner and president since 1983. In that capacity, Thomas E. Tate oversees custom home design projects throughout the island of Martha's Vineyard.
Over the last 32 years Tate Builders has designed and built a variety of custom homes on Martha’s Vineyard, including a six-bedroom house on Quitsa Pond in Chilmark. Arguably the most ambitious and intricate project the company has ever undertaken, the construction team utilized multivariable calculus in constructing a unique, double-recurved roof setup for the home. The two-year project also featured a complex climate-control system developed to maintain the homeowner’s valuable art collection.
Beyond the architectural complexities of the Quitsa Pond project, the home's custom design called for the use of uncommon construction materials. The flooring setup featured Portuguese granite, for example, while the exterior doorways made use of African ribbon-stripe mahogany. The company created a number of the custom features at its own West Tisbury shop, including each of the home’s 140 double-insulated windows.

Thomas Tate owns Tate Builders, Inc., located in Massachusetts on the island of Martha's Vineyard. Tate Builders specializes in custom homes with a variety of architectural styles. Thomas Tate serves as president of his company.
A wealth of trendy architectural styles are available these days. Some remain enduring choices, while other, newer designs have proven popular. One example, the Craftsman-style home, sees structures related to the arts-and-crafts movement that became popular in the 20th century. Craftsman-style homes embrace exteriors fashioned from stone and wood, with bungalow interiors.
Farmhouse styles offer a surprising blend of old and new. Foundations tend to be rectangular and allow for additions, depending on the wants and needs of the homeowner. Most farmhouses feature large or wrap-around porches and narrow windows designed to introduce a cross-breeze, but can be combined with contemporary exterior modifications such as a cement patio or deck that extends to a swimming pool.
Modern style refers to architecture popularized during the 1950s: flat or low-sloped roofs and spacious fireplaces. Materials used include wood, stone, and marble.
World Vision Provides Relief for Homes Damaged by Texas Floods
With more than three decades of construction management experience, Thomas (Tom) E. Tate serves as the owner and president of Tate Builders Inc., a design and build company that develops custom homes on the island of Martha's Vineyard. Dedicated to community development, Thomas Tate also supports a wide range of charitable organizations, including World Vision.
World Vision recently issued a press release to announce that it dispatched its 53-foot mobile warehouse from the disaster supply facility in Grand Prairie, Texas, to Blanco, Texas, where homes were destroyed and damaged by extensive flooding in the region. In collaboration with the Texas Baptists Disaster Recovery group, World Vision provided families with the materials required to restore their homes and address flood damage, such as insulation, roofing shingles, sinks, and bathtubs.
According to World Vision’s director of domestic disaster response, the Blanco area was largely overlooked by initial response efforts and didn’t receive a great deal of disaster funding, despite the number of homes impacted by the floods. World Vision focused its relief efforts on Blanco after the Texas Baptists Disaster Recovery team discovered 25 uninsured and damaged homes in the Wimberley area.
Thomas E. Tate leads as owner and president of Tate Builders Inc., a design-build construction firm on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. Over the past 22 years, Thomas “Tom” Tate has created numerous custom-designed homes for clients with a variety of tastes.
If you dream of a home that is suited exactly to your style and includes all of your most desired features, a custom build may be the right solution. While custom building allows you to select every element that goes into the construction of your home, it does require a fair amount of financial and logistical preparation.
Experts recommend that you start by creating a budget, which will help you to make informed choices about location and design. You must then ensure that you are able to source financing for both the land and the construction, a process that may include a down payment of up to 25 percent as well as significant cash reserves.
Once the financial aspects of your project are in order, you can begin planning. You may choose to find your land first or select a builder who can help you find the right piece of property. When you know who is building your house and how much space you have for it, you can finally begin to make specific choices regarding details. By the end of the build, you will have chosen every feature of your home, from cabinet hardware to the dimensions of your master bedroom.
Tate Builders Completes Six-Bedroom Quitsa Pond Home
Thomas E. Tate moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 1981 and currently operates a construction business in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. Over the years, he has built numerous custom homes, cottages, and summer properties. Thomas Tate’s past projects include a six-bedroom home overlooking Quitsa Pond in Chilmark, Massachusetts.
Considered by the company to be one of its most complex projects, the Quitsa Pond property took two years to complete and required multi-variable calculus for the construction of the home’s double re-curved roof system. The interior features Portuguese granite flooring and countertops, 140 double-insulated windows, and exterior doors made from African ribbon-stripe mahogany. In addition, the home possesses an extensive climate-control system designed to protect the owner’s art collection.
The completion of the project demonstrated the full capabilities of the company due to its complex requirements and use of imported materials. Throughout the firm’s history, it has taken on similarly challenging construction projects that focus on quality workmanship and designs that range from modest to sophisticated.
Recycled Building Materials Save Money and Promote Sustainability
For over three decades, Thomas E. Tate has owned and operated Tate Builders, Inc., a Massachusetts-based construction firm that designs and builds beautiful custom homes across the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Committed to environmental sustainability, Thomas Tate and his team of builders employ a variety of eco-friendly building practices and often use reclaimed material in their construction projects.
As individuals around the world work to lessen their environmental impact, the use of reclaimed building materials is becoming more and more common in both new construction and home remodeling projects. In addition to promoting sustainability, reclaimed materials help homeowners save money and offer them an easy way to introduce unique design elements into their living spaces.
Today, there are organizations across the country specializing in reusable, recyclable, and/or remanufactured building and landscaping materials. Most of these items are carefully salvaged from buildings scheduled to be demolished and are often in very good condition. While the most common salvaged materials are lumber, doors, flooring, and bathroom fixtures, it is also quite easy to find recycled concrete, metals, bricks, glass, and many other construction supplies.
