hi, so im re-listening to Beetlejuice again, and have a few things i forgot made this show so incredible
- the pastor at the beginning reads the verse, “sorrow not, for we do not walk alone,” which would normally be comforting, but in the context of ghosts and the show in general, reads very differently.
- Lydia and Beetlejuice both want people to ‘say their name’ to see them, but for entirely different reasons. Lydia’s observation that the world does not stop, “the sun still rises, clocks still tick” when someone dies perfectly sums up what its like to lose someone.
- in the reprise of Invisible, Beetlejuice sings the same line Lydia did “you’re invisible when you’re sad” but he replaces sad with “me”. He’s willing to complain and put on a show, but would rather be funny and whiny than face how actually miserable he is authentically, unlike Lydia, who relishes in darkness and misery. Beetlejuice is looking for an escape from death, while Lydia is racing toward it.
- the irreverence for death some how makes everything less frightening. Death sucks, but that means we should absolutely take advantage of as much life as we can. Comparing the afterlife to the bmv is sucky but a better alternative to eternal torment or nothing at all
- many of beetlejuice’s songs are in a range of song genre’s because he’s wild, but also, he’s not from a specific time period and has no context for what is appropriate
- Adam and Barbara’s first song where they start ranting about their hobbies that they are using because its easier to have hobbies than to risk failing. We see this behavior later when they talk about all of their abandoned hobbies, which they stopped because they failed at them at one point or another. Their lives are rooted in this distinct fear of failure and they would rather live skirting the surface of life if it means not messing up. Their fear of failure is also why they cant be scary at the beginning. They won’t try hard enough because trying as hard as they can and then failing is not an option. they would rather not try at all.
- Barbara managed to add so much to her character literally just by using a silly, deep, not very feminine and pretty voice at certain points
- Lydia reflects the oncoming conflict at the very beginning when she says, “grown ups want to fix things, when they cant it only fills them with shame, so they just look away”
- all of these characters are enslaved by various fears that makes them act irrationally. Beetlejuice is afraid of abandonment, Lydia is afraid of forgetting her mom, Adam and Barbara are afraid of taking risks, Charles is afraid of looking bad in front of others, Delia is afraid of not being loved, etc.
- gosssshhh this show is just so good
