At this point she felt better having input from him. “Greasy is fine,” she said, shrugging. “I mean… what kind of greasy? Are we talking like pizza grease or fried food grease or like…mexican greasy? Which is totally different but still a thing. I’m honestly fine with anything, I just love food.”

“Huh, guess I should've been more more specific on my grease eh?” Onyx scratched his chin, a thought brewing. “We could always hit the pub, or if you’d like I can call up the local McDonald’s and have them reserve us a table for two?”

Man’s gotta have his drink. Something about the phrase was funny to her, but she hid her amusement well, sticking to the affable expression that already rested on her face. “Right, right,” she agreed, giving the stranger a once-over before continuing. He seemed vaguely familiar, but she brushed it off to the light playing tricks on her. “You here for the game or just to unwind?”

He shrugged his shoulders, letting them slump back loosely. “Bit of both I suppose,” “But the game is more of just a ruse really,” It was true, had it not been for the pretense of a football match he’d probably be at home sitting in his pajamas. “What about you? business or pleasure?”

For the small price of eleven dollars, Brielle could find herself pretending to pay attention to the sports game on the screen while eating away at mozzarella sticks. She felt, in truth, that time was moving far too quickly, and the end of the year was staring at her with the distant glare of a disappointed mother. There was far too much left that she wanted to accomplish by the year’s end and hope seemed to dwindle more and more with each passing day. No, she reminded herself (as she always had to), don’t think like that.

Perhaps it’d been a mistake to venture out alone. Being surrounded by friends usually helped ease her mind, but today Brielle had decided against it, hoping that some kind of peace would benefit her. Now, though, her appetite had flipped on its head and the rhythm of her heart seemed to pick up. Some days Bri felt as though the longing inside her to be something greater was an ancient, wicked thing - other days she felt nothing at all. That was a hard realisation to swallow, but a figure to her right was a good enough distraction from that.

Glancing up, Bri raised her eyebrows in jest, scrunching her napkin up in one hand. “You eyeing my mozzarella sticks?”

Onyx raised his hands in defeat, sometimes there was no good excuse for eyeing up someone else’s food. “Ya got me,”Slumping into his seat he took a swig from the glass in his hand “They look pretty damn tasty, would’ve bought them myself, but,” He turned his pockets inside out, the lack of coin speaking for it’s self. “Man’s gotta have his drink.”

“Oh, no. That’s not –” She started to protest the idea of him replacing the necklace. It really wasn’t a big deal, just a cheap souvenir from the internet. He had nothing to apologize for since she’d run into him and not the other way around. Hazel was absolutely not going to take money for the necklace. His second offer was slightly more palatable but still overkill for an incident that wasn’t his fault, but he was looking so pleased with himself that Hazel felt like an even bigger jerk for refusing. “I…I can do lunch. But you really should let me pay. I ran into you.”

“Consider it a gentlemen’s treat,” He laughed wondering if she knew just how far from the title he was. “I’m absolutely starving,” “I don’t know about you but I could always go for something greasy,” Rubbing the back of his neck he took in her expression. “Uh I mean where would you like to go?”

Onyx shifted positions, his butt sore from sitting so long on the stone fountain. Throwing his jacket hood over his head he felt the lines in his face harden.‘What a way to spend your day off’ he thought tapping his foot. There was no doubt about it, he was bored. Boredom always seemed to lead him down what some would call a questionable train of thought. But he couldn’t help it! It was just in his nature. Onyx scanned the park and all it’s occupants, only stopping when he spotted a tall man passing by. He bit his lip, there was no harm in a little fun. 

He slid on a pair of sunglasses, his face now barely visible under his hood. Quickly he started tailing the man, and when he was hot on his heels he started muttering something, just loud enough for him to hear. “Suspect is on foot,” “Yes,” “That’s right he’s in a grey sweater,” The man whirred around to face him. “We’ve been compromised,” “I repeat we’ve been compromised, take the shot,”  

Onyx watched as the stranger’s expression went from annoyed to alarmed when he saw the tiny red dot dead center on his chest.

Hazel winced at the tone at first but it quickly softened. Glancing up she recognized the person she’d run into and blushed deeply. Onyx. A fellow Seelie and a coworker at the casino. Perfect. She had a feeling she’d get teased about this, but there were worse fates. At least she wasn’t getting yelled at in the street. 

“Sorry,” she repeated. Her hand went up to touch her necklace; the circle at the center used to spin but had apparently fallen out leaving just an empty triangle. “That’s okay, I got it off etsy, it wasn’t like it was super expensive or sentimental. It’s my own fault for not watching where I was going.” 

Letting out a sigh he dug into his pockets for his wallet, silently rifling threw the folds and producing a few bills. “Here get yourself a new one,”  Even if it wasn’t his fault he hated being that asshole. Onyx was about to hand over the money when an idea struck him. “Or you can let me buy you an apology lunch,” 

He held the bills out of her arm’s reach and gave her a cheeky smile. “I won’t take no for an answer.”

When: September 1 Who: OPEN

September first. Not technically a holiday, but Hazel almost felt like it should be for kids who’d grown up with the Harry Potter stories the way she had. So she celebrated with a hufflepuff t-shirt, owl earrings, and a deathly hallows necklace, announcing her nerdiness to anyone who knew enough to notice.  

She’d always felt connected to the stories. No, she hadn’t gotten a Hogwarts letter, but she had gotten a letter when she was ten years old, inviting her to Camp Forosnai where she learned she was different. That magic was real. Yer a Fey, Hazel. Didn’t have quite the same ring to it, but fiction was almost always better than reality. She’d hoped to find friends like Ron and Hermione but she’d been…different. The only Seelie. At least her adoptive family hadn’t been anything like the Dursleys. 

Tugging her phone from her pocket, she sent a text to her brother Heath Please tell me you’re available tonight for a Harry Potter marathon? She should have been paying more attention to where she was walking instead of her phone because no sooner had she hit send than she ran right into someone. 

“Oh, god…sorry, I wasn’t looking. Hi, uh… You okay?” 

A light ‘oof’ escaped his mouth at the sudden head on collision. Onyx liked a joke just as well as the next guy, but he wasn’t exactly in the mood for games.  He yanked out his ear buds, spinning around to meet the stranger. 

“Hey watch i-” His cheeks flared with embarrassment as she sputtered out an apology. So it was only an accident huh. “Uh yeah, I’m dandy,” “But your necklace is completely busted.”
