Di antiche origini sannitico-romane, la cittadina lega il suo nome ad una colonia di guerrieri Goti che, sopravvissuti alla sconfitta di Totila nel 553, si stanziarono nella zona come cittadini dell’Impero.
Importante sede di gastaldato sotto i Longobardi, in seguito possesso dei normanni, ospitò, nel 1100, Papa Pasquale II. Infeudata poi alle più grosse famiglie della nobiltà napoletana, è appartenuta ai Della Ratta, agli Acquaviva, ai Coscia e ai Carafa. Questi ultimi la mantennero fino alla fine della feudalità .
Sede vescovile fin dal X secolo, tra i vescovi che la ressero si ricordano Felice Peretti, Papa Sisto V e Sant’Alfonso de’ Liguori, fondatore della Congregazione dei Redentoristi, autore della nenia natalizia “Tu scendi dalle stelle”.
L’insediamento urbano, collocato sopra un costone tufaceo circoscritto da profonde forre create dai torrenti Riello e Martorano, ha mantenuto inalterata la sua bellezza, arricchitosi nel tempo di interessanti realtà architettoniche, che motivano e rendono interessante una visita.
Il territorio di S. Agata dei Goti lega il nome all’omonimo vino D.O.C. che nelle sue varie tipologie, bianco, rosso, rosato, piedirosso, aglianico, greco e falanghina, si abbina facilmente alle gustose pietanze della gastronomia sannita.

While it’s just a few miles from Caserta and its magnificent royal palace, Sant'Agata is a world away. It has several millennia of history, dating back to the ancient Samnite city of Saticula. It was taken over by the Romans, then dominated by the Goths (who lent it the name), the Longobards, and then became part of the Duchy of Benevento. It still lives in the Middle Ages, as the historic center is a well-preserved warren of narrow lanes leading to tiny piazzas, with pretty shops and palaces in between.
