7:10 p.m., your phone read. Tom promised he would get home around 7:30; twenty minutes had never seemed so long. Tom had been away for filming in the States for the past month and a half. FaceTimes, phone calls, and texts were all that you had, and you couldn’t wait to have the whole family together. You and Tom had 3 kids, all between the ages of 2 and 7. It had been difficult at times being alone with them, but luckily Tom’s parents was always willing to come over and help.
Now, the night had finally come! You had told the kids that their dad would be returning very soon, though you kept the exact day a secret, as flights weren’t always reliable. Tom had texted you around 6:30 that his flight had landed; the anticipation was too much to handle. Even with the distraction of playing and watching the kids to keep you busy, it felt like time was passing slower than ever.
At 7:30 (like he promised!), you heard a faint turn of the lock, and Tessa began barking. “I think I hear someone coming!” you told the kids, their heads turning towards you. “Do you want to see who it is?”
“Is it daddy?” yelled Darcy, your oldest.
“Why don’t you go see?” you smiled. Darcy ran off to the door, followed by Quinn, your middle child. The youngest, Casey, at 2 was walking, though slowly. You had to help her out from the play room and down the stairs. While on the journey to the door, the noises from downstairs grew louder. Tessa was barking and running around, Darcy and Quinn were shrieking and laughing, all excited for Tom’s return.
“Ah! Y/N! Help me!” Tom’s voice cut through the noise.
When you reached the front door, you were greeted by Tom sitting on the ground, luggage tossed to the side, Darcy and Quinn climbing all over him, and Tessa licking his face. Casey walked up and gave Tom a huge hug. Tom moved his curly hair from out of his eyes, and looked up to you with so much love in his eyes. He sighed contently, and with a chuckle said, “The kids, they ambushed me.”
You laughed, joining Tom on the ground, grinning and giving him a loving hug and kiss. The kids were going crazy (”Daddy! Look what I learned to do!” “Daddy, we missed you!” “I got this new toy!”), while you and Tom sat and listened to them, enjoying every moment of the family time. You squeezed his hand, and whispered, “I missed you so much, Tom.”
“I missed you, too, darling. I’m so happy to be home.”
